To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

I have beautiful long hair. It's really long, thick, shiney in a gently curly auburn cascade. It looks like a shampoo commercial. I keep it long to distract from the fact that the rest of me looks like shrek. Apart from the green bit, I'm not green. More tomatoey.

IceCreamSummer20 · 19/07/2020 23:10

I do think feeling attractive is definitely part of it. I have thick hair and it’s great to be able to have a good head of hair, as I age it really helps me to feel a bit younger. Also I have sticky out ears which look terrible with short hair.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 19/07/2020 23:10

Some women look great with long hair but I think if its thinning it looks crap kept long.

Yes, OP, you are the only woman in the whole world to be heroically resistant to Gendered Cultural Pressures. The rest of us sheeple will just sit around in our towers flicking our Disney Princess locks about.

@Ilovegreentomatoes

Snow White, the very first Disney Princess
Tinkerbell
Rapunzel at the end of Tangled
Wendy in Peter Pan

Loads of the Pixar Characters

Not Disney but Anastasia didn’t have long hair.

No, I keep my hair long because I think short hair looks ugly on women. I’ve never seen it suit a woman, ever. Celebrity or otherwise.
And I think rudeness is ugly on everyone, but there you go...
SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/07/2020 23:12

Didn't snow white have short hair?

Rockhopper81 · 19/07/2020 23:12

Incidentally, I don't care how 'ugly' my short hair makes me look, I like it so I'll stick with it!

tmh88 · 19/07/2020 23:13

For me I feel long hair is a safe choice! I had a short cut once my head looked like a football it was horrendous I hated it! Long hair Is so much better on me, I tie it up if I want it out of my face.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/07/2020 23:13

@WinterAndRoughWeather

Sure *@SchrodingersImmigrant*, I bet you wear high heels for you too.

Who wouldn’t want to damage their spine, for themselves?

Ha. I don't wear high heels😂 I genuinely don't own single pair😂
fortheloveofcrisps · 19/07/2020 23:13

Well my husband has a thing for the woman in strike back so no.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 19/07/2020 23:13

I have a short bob as long hair irritates me. I find nearly all teenage girls have boring long hair and the boys are much more creative. I love short hair.

amurderofone · 19/07/2020 23:15

I've had all sorts of lengths and colours. My hair is currently growing out from shaving it all off on number 1 a few months ago so it's sort of a short pixie style at the minute. Couldn't care less what anyone, let alone men, think of my hair. It's my hair and as such my own opinion is the only one that matters when it comes to styling it. I'm lucky though in that I suit pretty much any hairstyle and colour and always have. My DH finds me attractive regardless because beauty and "femininity" is more than what your hair looks like and I think you'd have to lead an exceptionally tragic life to ever think otherwise.

I think Anastasia had long hair, but kept them under the hat a while

Sally872 · 19/07/2020 23:16

It is quite a big step to change your hair, so cutting it short is not something I am likely to be brave enough to try because I like it long, struggle to imagine it short and it will take a while to grow and I will be dealing with it every day if I cut it short and don't like it.

Mistymonday · 19/07/2020 23:16

Nope, my hair is long because 1. I am too lazy to get it cut very often, 2. It grows crazy fast since I went vegan, 3. With curly hair, the weight of longer hair makes it a but more wavy than curly, 4. I have a slightly round face and longer hair is more flattering, 5. I had short hair, bobs etc and liked it too but Shorter hair needs too much styling!

SueEllenMishke · 19/07/2020 23:16

What utter bollocks.
I have had short and long hair over the years and I 100% suit short hair the most.
I've now had short hair for 4 years and it is fabulous. My hairdresser is a genius.

cuntryclub · 19/07/2020 23:16

I'm fat, I don't do my eyebrows, shave my legs or pluck my chin hair. I'm also a lesbian. But yes, I totally keep my hair long so I can be attractive to the opposite sex Confused

Rewis · 19/07/2020 23:16

Short hair requires too much up-keep for me. Now I can go to hairdresser 1-2 times a year and just throw it on a ponytail when I don't feel like shaping it. I have had significantly shorter hair and it needed more doing to look decent.

Ponoka7 · 19/07/2020 23:16

In Tangled, Rapunzel cuts her hair.

Feminine and masculine looks are obviously influenced by fashions and perceptions of beauty.

I like long hair. When I was younger I had my hair short. Since my 30's I've kept it long. I've been celibate for seven years, attractiveness to men isn't my aim. If I had more money, I'd have rose gold hair, a bit shorter, in beach waves. But that would take fortnightly hairdresser appointments. You can get away with dodgy home colouring when you're under 25. But rose gold hair is on my lottery win, spending list.

PhilSwagielka · 19/07/2020 23:16

I'm bisexual, and I have long hair because I like the texture of it and because short hair does not suit me. About the shortest I'll go is bob length. I'm the opposite of my mum, who would look bloody stupid with long hair. Also, I'm not really that arsed about looking good most of the time, I just tie it back.

AwkwardMoment2020 · 19/07/2020 23:17

I find nearly all teenage girls have boring long hair and the boys are much more creative.

Hmm

That’s a pretty misogynistic comment. Can’t you see that? Why are you so invested in teenagers hairstyles? Why does long hair = boring and short hair = creative?

RainingMeatballs · 19/07/2020 23:17

I find short hair a right faff, depending on style I either look like a microphone or mushroom depending on the style unless I style it well with products. Long hair is weighed down and can look cool worn a bit wild. Also it grows so fast, I tried a chin length bob last year and it’s back below my bra strap with a bit of neglect.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 19/07/2020 23:18

I’ve had mine long, short and everything in between - also many colours (but not blonde yet!)

I’ve never had so much male attention as I did in my 20s with a pixie crop. I would love to have it again, but now I’m fat and frumpy, I have a feeling it wouldn’t have the same magnetic effect as it used to!

I did toy with the idea of shaving my head during lockdown, as a few others on MN have done! I’d have loved to start again with my natural silver hair instead of the repeatedly dyed black frizz I currently have.

But I know my DP wouldn’t like it, and - much as I like to think I’m above all that - I want him to find me sexy and he likes longer hair. (He also likes skinny blondes, and it’s tough shit on that front!) but he always says I look good when my hair is longer and loose.

I usually put it up in a ponytail as I hate the feeling of hair on my neck and face, but when I occasionally straighten it and leave it down it always gets a good response, which makes me happy. He has two DDs with long straight hair and it’s been an ongoing PITA with nits. When I’ve suggested that maybe shorter hair might make that easier for them, they’re all resistant to it, so clearly as a family they value length over ease every time!!
