I don’t believe in ghosts but...

Hear me out here.

I do not believe in ghosts at all. But we moved recently into a Victorian house and DS’ room is above mine. Without fail, every night around this time 21.30-22.00, there is a very loud THUD from directly upstairs. As if DS has fallen out of bed. 10 seconds later the baby monitor switches on and he is sitting up (in bed - didn’t fall out), awake. Last night this happened at 1am.

It’s always 1-3 thuds which seem to wake him up. Once or twice it has happened and he hasn’t awoken and slept through. But usually...

WHAT IS THIS?!? Ghosty ghost?!

DH never hears it as he’s asleep or downstairs so it could also be me losing my mind. Very clear loud thud though...

Yes - semi. We hear nothing else ever though. Just these timed thuds. I have been clinging onto the hope that it’s the neighbours but it’s honestly freaking me out a little. I am sure rationally that you are right (or maybe we have a terrifying, huge rat under his room or something who has a keen sense of time).

The idea of going and sitting in the dark in his room scares me though. The house was also purchased as the lady in it before died. Which doesn’t help.

Pipes?
The house I grew up in was super old and the pipes would often thud loudly.
I'm going to assume you checked the house when you moved in and don't have a weirdo living in your attic. (But check anyway! )

Move him to another room and leave a laptop and webcam, with some strategically placed items for the ghost to throw.

If it’s a rat then you need to know. Does anywhere smell strongly of urine (rats piss/shit all in one place and it STINKS)

I have wondered about this too but he’s really quite small for such a loud thud.

The thing which is actually creeping me out is the timing of it. Why is it always (99% anyway) at the same time?! WHY?!

I am a rational person (when it comes to the supernatural anyway), but it IS freaking me out.

Fairly sure no one in the attack as we had water tank removed from up there before moving in. There was an old aerial initially making noise in the wind but that has been removed. This is a very definite THUD like a child falling out of bed noise.

The house has also been fully replumbed. I could call and ask plumber if that’s a thing though - he will think I’m insane but that’s ok at this point.

If it's a predictable time could you get your DH to keep an ear out for it one night?
You might have a better chance of figuring it out together.
Even if he thinks it's silly, it's bothering you.

Hi op I have done up quite a few houses and they make noise due to temperature fluctuations. The house is old and if an old lady lived there she probably had everything in the same place for years and didn’t move around much. All of a sudden within a short space of time all her things have Been moved and all your things moved in so the house has been unsettled in terms of floors, joists, pipe work everything. If it is the same time it would make me think of a system or a temp fluctuation. Good luck it sounds unnerving especially as it is a new home to you.

Asking my neighbours what they are doing at 21.30ish each night without it sounding like I’m making a PA comment about their noise?!
