I don’t believe in ghosts but...

Hear me out here.

I do not believe in ghosts at all. But we moved recently into a Victorian house and DS’ room is above mine. Without fail, every night around this time 21.30-22.00, there is a very loud THUD from directly upstairs. As if DS has fallen out of bed. 10 seconds later the baby monitor switches on and he is sitting up (in bed - didn’t fall out), awake. Last night this happened at 1am.

It’s always 1-3 thuds which seem to wake him up. Once or twice it has happened and he hasn’t awoken and slept through. But usually...

WHAT IS THIS?!? Ghosty ghost?!

DH never hears it as he’s asleep or downstairs so it could also be me losing my mind. Very clear loud thud though...

My experience of chimneys is that random crap does come down them, even when recently swept. The amount you pictured wouldn’t bother me.

Heating systems don’t need to be old to make noise. Ours is only a few months old and makes noise, it’s thermal expansion of a joint, and it means our plumber didn’t do such a good job of making space for it above the lounge.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask how you’re doing mentally when you’re asking about where the noise is coming from (initially it seemed to be only you hearing it). I didn’t actually say it was all in your head (it could be, but not so likely if other people are hearing it too). I said that when I lived in a house where weird things kept happening it was during a period in which I was quite under pressure. At the time they seemed very real, and I wonder if the happenings were real and I was just more susceptible to them because I was on edge most of the time anyway. Similar to the idea that ghostly stuff is going on around us all the time, but most people not really being able to see/hear it/being more vulnerable to noticing when stressed. For my own experience, it is of course possible that I was temporarily batshit and imagining it all. I’ll never know. The problem for looking out for these noises and trying to investigate is that you then become hyper alert, and so hear more noises than you would normally because you’re actually listening. Nobody is gaslighting you, just offering ideas based on own experience

@OldQueen1969

Your post scared me! Especially the bit where there was inexplicably a lock on the outside of the room
THe lady was guarding. Jesus.

We have seen a bird sitting on the chimney from the garden so that’s the chimney explained. DH can’t get into loft without a ladder so will have to wait until Monday.

Will try recording this evening.

Don't worry about the chimney, Victorian house here and regularly get random stuff come out.

@Becomingbatshit

I'm so sorry I really didn't mean to scare you - honestly nothing ever felt malevolent about the place, in fact we were often complimented on the nice atmosphere in the flat - it was just a bunch of oddness that we came to accept as our normal. Personally I think the trick is to treat it all lightly - there may be a perfectly rational explanation that becomes clear at some point or there may not be - but perspective is truly key - in these troubling times with so many aspects of normal life restricted things do become magnified.

But once again, really sorry - have a stiff Gin and some Flowers and I'm crossing my fingers for squirrels for you x

The thing is it was a nice old lady and her family who lived here before so would be a friendly ghost I’m sure.. 😁

I'm invested in this now!

We have a Edwardian house that had the same owners for 60 years. I still sometimes feel that I'm invading their home 😁.

We regularly get stuff fall down our chimneys, it's always the pigeons.

DH and I have now heard funny noises from
Upstairs. Like moving furniture and running.

He has also helpfully reminded me that this house was originally a doctor’s surgery and maybe people died here then 😖

Are either of you going to go up and investigate OP?

Went up - nothing up there! When DS wakes up and comes into our bed will leave recording app on phone. And have video monitor on now

Very productive evening as DH heard a lot of noises with me and is now very invested in finding out what it is too! So that’s helpful!

Squirrels make an obscene amount of noise for such a small animal. When they run they sort of jump along so it does sound like bang bang bang. And for some reason noise in an attic seems to amplify.

Fingers crossed it’s just squirrels. Grin

Any updates??!

As for stress and anxiety manifesting as poltergeist activity; I have first hand experience of this, and I'm not woo, but, as someone else said, there are stranger things....

I need to get to the bottom of this. I am staring at the baby monitor video and all I have heard for 20 mins are thuds and then running sounds but my son hasn’t bloody moved an inch. What the fuck

If you've got floorboards I think you need to start lifting them.

I had a Tudor farmhouse and when we lifted the old oak boards there was a dead rat, no lie the size of a cat, underthere!

Rodents under the floorboards can sound like elephants

I agree with Bayandblonde. What you describe sounds just like rats. They can be so loud. Maybe they found a way in during renovations?

I agree, rats can be very loud.

What's happening op?

Report
pumpkinbump · 05/05/2020 20:32

Very interested to find out what the cause of this is. Do you mean that you both heard the noises and when you listebdd to the recording from the same time you heard them there as nothing on it?
