I don’t believe in ghosts but...

Hear me out here.

I do not believe in ghosts at all. But we moved recently into a Victorian house and DS’ room is above mine. Without fail, every night around this time 21.30-22.00, there is a very loud THUD from directly upstairs. As if DS has fallen out of bed. 10 seconds later the baby monitor switches on and he is sitting up (in bed - didn’t fall out), awake. Last night this happened at 1am.

It’s always 1-3 thuds which seem to wake him up. Once or twice it has happened and he hasn’t awoken and slept through. But usually...

WHAT IS THIS?!? Ghosty ghost?!

DH never hears it as he’s asleep or downstairs so it could also be me losing my mind. Very clear loud thud though...

I wonder how many other posters were (as I was) reading the thread with interest, feeling quite relaxed and curious about the possibility that it genuinely might be something supernatural, then spotted the suggestion/s that it might be rats and thought "God, no! Shock Poor woman! That's horrendous!"

Just depends what scares you most I guess. Grin

Mice are pretty scary too when you get up to pee at 4am and are just commencing the sit down and one jumps out at you from under the bath. Many a night of swearing and wet feet as a result of it xD

My concern if it were rats would be that, on account of the one loud thud and the lack of any other noises/precise timing, it would be a terrifying overlord genius rat with some sort of game plan eg scaring us out of the top floor so he can roam there.

But then, Tom
kitten and the Roly Poly pudding always scared the bejesus out of me.

Haha a rat king! xD

Isn't there a ghosty film where they hear the same thud at the same time every night...? And it turns out it's the ghost hanging itself over and over again. Caught on a loop. Wooooo lol.

I think if its the same time every night though its more likely to be something to do with heating and cooling.

Oh, it couldn't be next door closing their fire up for the night could it? That makes a racket.

Could you go next door and say 'hey, just wondered, because your house is the same as ours...theres a random bang from upstairs at the same time every night, any idea what it might be?'. I'm sure they wont think you are accusing them. Though guess if they go 'oh yeah, the place is haunted' you'll wish you hadnt asked lol.

Does your son wear a grow bag? They tend to do big thuds in those for sone reason.

OP can you bring your DC into your room for tonight and see if it still happens? If it does then you know it's not him

Does your son take a bottle or cup of milk to bed with him? We sometimes hear a thump when our child falls asleep, lets go of the bottle and it hits the floor. It often rolls under his bed so you don't always notice it when you go in to check on them.

The bedroom is carpeted but we still hear it!

It's nothing, just normal old house settling noises. We have similar, I lie in bed hearing someone walking around upstairs, definite footsteps noises. Thing is, we don't have an upstairs. So obviously settling noises.

I don't believe in ghosts. I don't believe in ghosts. I don't believe in ghosts. How many times do I have to say it to make them go away? Just settling noises. For sure. Are priests on lockdown?

He has a bottle of water (his father’s sports one which he purloined) but this is always in situ and never fallen off.

He also has a duvet and pillow as 21 months.

I’m going to video monitor it and stare at the monitor whilst simultaneously using a phone in there with the app someone mentioned so I can record the bloody noise (and somehow play if for people?)

I am following this thread with great interest. Of course I am sorry, OP, that you are frightened, of course! However, this has been quite the distraction!

My little brother was in the habit of turning on to his stomach, tucking his knees under him (think Child's pose in Yoga) and then rock back and forth, often banging his head against his headboard. It startled the rest of the household at first, but it seemed to soothe him back to sleep within a few "thumps" most of the time.

Sometimes, after a particularly loud bang, my parents would go in and find him sitting up, looking around sleepily. Not hurt in the least!

And it always happened the same time every night, likely at the end of a sleep cycle.

I am sure your son is just fine, too. It's you we've got to worry about. Mamas need their sleep!

@DamnYankee

LOL
At your Brother!

No need to apologise for enjoying this - I’m actually very grateful that other people are equally perturbed as DH has 0 interest or curiosity about it (if it were me I would want to stay awake to hear it!)

Your sleep app is on and in there and ready to roll and I’m staring at a video monitor of DS in bed
