I don’t believe in ghosts but...

Hear me out here.

I do not believe in ghosts at all. But we moved recently into a Victorian house and DS’ room is above mine. Without fail, every night around this time 21.30-22.00, there is a very loud THUD from directly upstairs. As if DS has fallen out of bed. 10 seconds later the baby monitor switches on and he is sitting up (in bed - didn’t fall out), awake. Last night this happened at 1am.

It’s always 1-3 thuds which seem to wake him up. Once or twice it has happened and he hasn’t awoken and slept through. But usually...

WHAT IS THIS?!? Ghosty ghost?!

DH never hears it as he’s asleep or downstairs so it could also be me losing my mind. Very clear loud thud though...

Have you got a tv sound system with a speaker? We used to and every now and again it would make a really loud noise that sounded like something heavy falling on the floor directly overhead. It spooked us before we realised what it was.

@SerenDippitty

No! Sounds spooky though

Could it be DS kicking out in his sleep and hitting the wall or bed/cotframe?

DD thuds the end of her cot in her sleep and the noise from it is surprisingly loud, she always does it at roughly the same time every night (11pm-ish) and most nights wakes up a few seconds afterwards.

My money is on him thumping the cot.

Is there a toilet anywhere nearby? The plumbing in our house is awful and one of our toilets has issues and every so often makes a big 'clank' due to refilling. We have to flush it to get it to stop. Also, I think the fact you said the heating is always on could be key. Is there a timer for the heating? Is it trying to turn off at that time and causing a pipe to thud? The other thing that made our pipes clang was our dishwasher. We'd put it on at night and lots of sounds in the pipes. We've now had a new dishwasher and plumbed properly and no more noise!

Could it be neighbours coming home from shift work and the noise travels? Roughly the same time so car door or front door slammed?

Report
Becomingbatshit · 23/04/2020 22:33

Definitely not toilets and not the neighbours coming home as they are home all day

Have you got an indoor aerial? i sometimes hear a thudding noise, like something heavy falling down inside the wall, i don't know if it is anything to do with the aerial, and it doesn't seem to have moved, but i can't think what else it could be,it's frightening when it happens as it sounds very heavy, but still a mystery

Would it be possible for your son to sleep in the same room as you and see if the noises still occur?
I am reminded of a phrase my grandmother used; “ old houses have noises” and once you get used to the noises you don’t hear them anymore, or once the house gets used to you it doesn’t make them anymore .

@Becomingbatshit

I'm sorry :)
But i would be freaked out, try record it...

True story... Years ago, when apps where just coming out, there was an app that you could set up just before bed , it didn't record video, just voice, it would click in when any noise was in the room

So the next morning, eager to hear myself snoring i played it back, and there was abit of snoring, etc, then this fucked up creepy voice, didn't make sense what it was saying. But was so freaked out by it
I didn't set it up again...

Please set up some kind of recording device So we can all find out what’s causing the bumps in the night!

I always have thought that if a “ghost “ wanted to contact you, they wouldn’t faff around making unidentifiable noises, they would just contact the person they needed to, and that person would know.
There wouldn’t be anything scary or unexplained about it.
You will probably find out what the noise is in time, it wouldn’t be anything supernatural, and certainly nothing to worry about.
Could your son sleep in the same room as you and your partner, then you would at least rule out the possibility of your son causing the noise.

I'd definitely be setting up a camera! Or sitting in the room and watching for any spooky goings-on.

I'm a sucker for anything creepy so please keep us updated!

We ate in the attic and it's so creaky. I was thinking the other day that other people would be freaked out by the cupboard door opening and closing if its own accord, the screech of wind through windows, various bumps and thumps that I have learned to ignore.
You need to spend a few nights up there.

Could be mice. I saw a ghost once (no doubt about it). But mice...I've seen far more of them lol. And they are noisy little buggers. So my bet would be that that's more likely. Or could just be a house settling noise. Tbh...I think if it were a ghost, you'd bloody well KNOW it.

I once rented a flat in a very old house, reputed to be haunted. A few days after I moved in, I got woken up by a loud bang on my bedroom floorboards. It sounded like someone had dropped a stack of books on the floor. But there was nothing there, nothing on the floor that might have fallen over.

I just said out loud - "Ok, Hi, I hear you. I'm not a threat". And it never happened again.

In your case OP, I would set up a phone to record. But I'd SHIT myself when listening to it!

Could it be next door flushing their toilet or having a shower before bed?

Hi, OP. Our son kicks the bed guards and at times sounds like he is coming through the ceiling!! It’s weird as because when you’re in the room with him (we wondered what it was first of all and thought it was him falling out of bed!!) it doesn’t sound half as loud!

Sounds like something the neighbours are doing

(What time did the lady die and was it in the house)

Report
LudaMusser · 23/04/2020 23:11

For me the key thing here is that it's the same time, each time

If ghosts do exist I don't think they do things by the clock

Why not set up your phone to record?

do you have electric heating on two different tariffs and meters , time controlled by a clock? Ours made a loud thud every time it changed from one tariff meter to the other., and the regular time of your noise suggests a time-setting. . Maybe next door if it's not yours? Or a CH pump?
