I don’t believe in ghosts but...

Hear me out here.

I do not believe in ghosts at all. But we moved recently into a Victorian house and DS’ room is above mine. Without fail, every night around this time 21.30-22.00, there is a very loud THUD from directly upstairs. As if DS has fallen out of bed. 10 seconds later the baby monitor switches on and he is sitting up (in bed - didn’t fall out), awake. Last night this happened at 1am.

It’s always 1-3 thuds which seem to wake him up. Once or twice it has happened and he hasn’t awoken and slept through. But usually...

WHAT IS THIS?!? Ghosty ghost?!

DH never hears it as he’s asleep or downstairs so it could also be me losing my mind. Very clear loud thud though...

Dear God... makes mental note to never voice or video record anything ever again

OP, I can only suggest the same thing I would do if a big spider crawled out of sight... lock that door and never go in that room again, burn the house down or move Wink

You should download the sleep talk app and set it up in your sons room before he goes to sleep.

I downloaded it years ago to prove to my dad how much shit he chatted in his sleep. It only records when noises are picked up so you can listen to different clips to identify the one you want. Definitely worth a try, it’s quite weird the noise is at the exact same time nightly, I’d also be starting to get spooked!

Like others have suggested it will most likely be due to plumbing or being an old house but worth a try downloading the app, you’ll get a good laugh out of what’s said in people’s sleep if nothing else.

My eldest has a cabin bed and about half ten at night she must start to move as there’s always two thumps. One as her filthy but loved doll hits the floor and another as she hits the side of the bed. I went to watch after months of this. When she first falls asleep at the same time she doesn’t move at all and half ten was the point she started flailing in her sleep. Could well be something similar. The thumps sounds like she’s leapt out of best to the floor.

Sorry...why is it okay for your little one to stay in that room alone when you yourself don't want to. I would not have my child in a room alone which I myself wouldn't want to be in. Genuine question - not trying to be arsey

Because I am scared for purely irrational reasons that he is fully unaware of. My husband would have no fear of sleeping in there either. There’s nothing actual “wrong” in the room, I’m
Just now scared because it’s the same noise every night.

I will have a think about what to do tonight. Either I keep his video monitor on and stare at it to rule out him kicking the bed, or I bring him into our bed all night (but then if there is no noise does that 100% mean it was him?) or I go in the room or leave a phone recording sound in there?

I don’t know where the old lady died. We sleep in her room though. Another young family
Member did die but no reason to
Think it was in that room either. But the idea is creeping me out.

It’s definitely not mice or rats as it’s one thud. It’s also not radiators or water - as I said the entire house was replumbed, new boiler, new radiators etc so sure not that. And the heating is permanently on (and boiler/hot water in garage) currently so not coming on and off.

Most likely is DS or the neighbour but not sure how to ask neighbour so will try to rule out or confirm DS tonight.

I'd guess it is your son hitting or kicking the cot frame and the frame is amplifying that energy through the floor. If that makes sense.

Some practical advice from someone who gets called in to deal with weird stuff. I'm a priest.

It is usually something like pipes or the house settling at night or drafts. Really. Honestly. I hear all kinds of stuff and it isn't ghostly but ancient plumbing or a neighbour who slams the door having had a wee after their favourite tv programme. You are in a new house and not used to it's sounds. A bit of practical investigation will sort out where it is coming from.

There is an outside chance that someone's anxiety is causing a banging sound. It can happen in care homes and boarding schools. Sometimes it happens around babies. There is nothing ghostly going on. It is just anxiety and it goes away when the anxiety is addressed.

If you have done all the investigation and are still worried please phone your local Priest or minister from one of the mainstream churches. We have had training in these phenomena and can do a house blessing.

Do you know anyone with a video baby monitor that would let you borrow it for a night or two? I’ve got one and the night vision is just as clear as it is in the day. You could see if your LO is kicking the bed/what’s waking him up without having to sit in there in the dark! Got mine for about 60 quid from amazon, happy to link if you’re interested.

There's an app called Dream Talk Recorder, I tried it and it works. Only records noise.

I'd say it's a 50/50 chance of being something a bit woo.

I've experienced some interesting things over the years. A friend of mine grew up in an old converted farmhouse. Her brothers bedroom was where the stairs used to be and every night, at the same time they heard screaming noises. The child whose room it was heard nothing. They also used to see a little girl occasionally who would pop in and out of the kitchen, in the older part of the house. Shock

My brother used to talk to a man in his bedroom, and we highly suspect it was the man who we later found out, died there. My mum also reported being woken up by someone sitting on the bed in the middle of the night. She suspects the same man, who apparently died in the house after drinking himself to death.

I think realistically sometimes ghosts dont realise they've died and are genuinely bemused by the strangers in their houses.

Anyway. It could also be something completely normal. Either way, you'll not know until you sit in the room with a recorder. Go on, do it! Wink

OP its very warm at the moment in the day but then the nights are still quite cold. I'll bet it's just the joists/ floorboards contracting and maybe slipping against each other as they cool.

My dd is in a grobag and slams her feet up and down in it onto her cot mattress. Makes a hell of a noise when she does it. My bet is it’s your ds. He’s stirring in his sleep cycle, kicks out then wakes up not long after.

Ahhh...I see what you mean. I don't believe in ghosts either but at the same time I don't want either myself or my loved ones to be surprised by one of them either. Whether ghosts are real or not is one of those things where there is no real evidence either way. Some say they've seen them but others provide logical explanations as to why people think they've seen a ghosts. But I think there is no absolute evidence proving they don't exist. A lot of things exist that are not visible to the naked eye but I am hoping ghosts are not one of them. The sound could very well be your ds kicking his cot. I would still get your son out of that room until you figure out what the hell that sound is or have your dh or yourself be in that same room until you are satisfied that there is nothing to be worried about. Don't expose him to any risk actual or potential. Can your dh not stay in his room around that time to try and figure out what it is? if he can't then maybe you can move his cot into your room for a few days to see. Also if you have no joy with your own investigations, I would ask the neighbours if they know what that noise is (if they are good and friendly neighbours). Explain that you are not complaining but as the sound seems to be coming from your ds's room you just want to get to the bottom of this to put your mind at rest. If your neighbours have been there long enough they would know about the deaths in that house so hopefully won't take it the wrong way. This is very intriguing ,please do keep us posted x

I live in a v old cottage in the middle of nowhere, it is SO noisy at night, even my dogs get scared of all the loud noises and creaks it makes so I sleep with a fan on for the white noise! When DH is away I have to have a lot of strong words with myself to get a grip Grin

What is the wiring like, if it’s quite an old house? We had some work done years ago and the (cowboy) builders/electricians didn’t connect the underfloor wires properly. They started to short out and in the late evening at first we’d hear a massive whoompf muffled banging noise from downstairs in the room below. Then a picture fell off the wall in that corner while we were sat there watching the tv.
It was only one afternoon when it happened while I was sat there facing the corner where the (off) tv was that I identified it as an electrical fault amplified by the tv, which was the old boxy cathode ray tube type.
Called a reputable electrician out who was appalled and wrote a detailed report in case we wanted to take it further. Original company paid up straight away for the cost to put right. They knew they were in the wrong.
Up until that point I was convinced we had a poltergeist!

Go to your neighbours and say something like 'hi, I keep hearing this noise at 9:30 ish and I'm wondering if you can hear it too?'

Report
Becomingbatshit · 24/04/2020 10:58

The problem with removing DS from the room is that the most logical explanation is HE is making the noise; I think. So best is to keep him in and watch with our video monitor or go in there myself. Although I do also have a bit of a “watched pot never boils” feeling so if I go in myself I bet it doesn’t happen!

I think tonight the plan is to try to rule out DS. Next port of call to rule out neighbours. This is a night by night thing I think:

It's probably water pressure, we had this at a similar time of day, turns out that the time of day that water usage drops off and pipes can bang from water hammer.

Changing the stopcock at the end of the drive cured ours.

I’ve never seen a ghost. I think they are brain tricks induced by naturally occurring phenomena. They are not supernatural in any way, It is known that infrasound, for example, can induce feelings of uneasiness and cause your eyeballs to wobble resulting in hallucinations.

Not sure why the Grin pp, as there are plenty of programmes about what @SerenDippitty has mentioned. Do some youtubing and you'll see. Apparently it happens in London underground.

However, what I saw was not infrasound lol. I've lived here for 6 years now and only saw that thing once. On the night there was something occult in the house (which I hadnt given any thought to at the time, so not mind trick either). Too much of a coincidence.

I'd say dont record anything. I've watched a fair few woooo programmes now (on the hunt for what I saw) and they say that can make them more active. The best thing to do is to ignore it. But if things get more prevalent or sinister, get a minister in asap.

I wouldn't put my kid in there. Not until I was sure it was safe. If it is anything nasty, kids are particularly vulnerable.

It's probably nothing. But on the off chance...
Stay safe!x
