What Should Be My 2000th Film?

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 15:48

So, I'm a big film fan, and I'm coming up to watching my 2000th film (don't ask how I know, I'm sad enough to have kept track).

I'm having some friends over to turn my 2000th film into a bit of an event - we'll watch it on a big projector, eat popcorn and pizza etc. etc, which will be really fun.

The problem is, I don't know what film it should be! It's difficult, because I want it to be a really good film, but how would I know if I haven't seen it yet? I was thinking something epic, like Lawrence of Arabia, but think it'll just bore my friends, so naive something light and entertaining would be better? But it's also got to be worthy if "film 2000" status!

AIBU to ask you all for some recommendations? To give an indication of what I've already watched - I've seen the majority of the IMDb top 250 films (plus 1750 others...)

The Birdcage

It’s glorious.

AlbusPercival · 23/07/2019 16:00

What about Your Name?

londonloves · 23/07/2019 16:02

This is so fascinating. How old were you when you started tracking?

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 16:02

@VivienneHolt It is glorious, but I've seen it. Many times. I was one of my favourites growing up - I think I watched it at least once a month for about a year!

Apocalypse Now. My favourite ever film and it's so bloody beautiful and heartbreaking.

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 16:03

@AlbusPercival Thanks, but I've seen it!

Pump up the volume or Heathers are cult classics and were my all time favourites as a teen.

HesTheFastestKidAlive · 23/07/2019 16:05

I think we need the list...

pugtato · 23/07/2019 16:06

My favourite is probably The Big Lebowski, or Fargo. Any particular genre you would like to go for?

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 16:07

@londonloves Well, I'd been collecting cinema ticket stubs since I was about 14. I only started to actually record everything about 5 years ago, but I've got an amazing memory when it comes to films I've watched. And IMDb is a great resource for digging up long forgotten films. I'm sure there are films that I watched when I was four and under, but if I can't really remember them, I don't want to include them!

I'd put out a poll amongst your friends ask for suggestions first then set up a vote.

I'd go for a classic, but would imagine you've seen them all before:

Casablanca
Lost Boys
Rebecca (the original)
Lawrence of Arabia is actually really good.
Some like it Hot

Or as its a celebration, go silly and/or singalong

Rocky Horror picture show
Sound of music
Grease.

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 16:08

@cheesenpickles Yep, great film, but again, watched it!

The Breakfast Club

ohcanada · 23/07/2019 16:09

What about 2001 space odyssey? Or maybe that should be the one after...

ohcanada · 23/07/2019 16:09

Shrek 2

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 16:10

@londonloves Also great films. Pump Up the Volume has such a great soundtrack. Led me to many great bands/ artists.

Martha meet frank, Daniel and Lawrence is good - British ensemble comedy, lots of London icons in it

growlingbear · 23/07/2019 16:11

What sort of films do you and your friends love?

If you are serious arty film buffs maybe something like Les Enfants du Paradis or Cinema Paradiso. Otherwise I totally agree with showing a cult film you've seen before. I'd do Rocky Horror and ask everyone to dress up.Or a classic Hitchcock or Some Like It Hot.

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 16:11

@HesTheFastestKidAlive yeah, I suppose that would be helpful, wouldn't it. Otherwise it's just a game of name a film I haven't seen! I'll see if I can share a link from my IMDb page...

I presume you've seen the Godfather trilogy?

Other than that, I loved Some Kind of Wonderful when I was a teen.

More recently, loved Blood Diamond, Black Hawk Down, Brooklyn.

edwinbear · 23/07/2019 16:12

My favourite is What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams - but I'm guessing you've already seen it!

NoWayNoHow · 23/07/2019 16:12

OP are there any that you know you've definitely not seen (like Lawrence of Arabia) that you could use to compile a "shortlist" for us to choose from? Otherwise I suspect this thread will just be a lot of people suggesting one of the 1,999 films you HAVE seen! Smile

cheesenpickles · 23/07/2019 16:13

How do you feel about foreign film?

NoWayNoHow · 23/07/2019 16:13

crosspost @HesTheFastestKidAlive !

poshme · 23/07/2019 16:15

If you like dogs- Best in show.

Quirky comedy. I watched it by mistake once.
