What Should Be My 2000th Film?

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 15:48

So, I'm a big film fan, and I'm coming up to watching my 2000th film (don't ask how I know, I'm sad enough to have kept track).

I'm having some friends over to turn my 2000th film into a bit of an event - we'll watch it on a big projector, eat popcorn and pizza etc. etc, which will be really fun.

The problem is, I don't know what film it should be! It's difficult, because I want it to be a really good film, but how would I know if I haven't seen it yet? I was thinking something epic, like Lawrence of Arabia, but think it'll just bore my friends, so naive something light and entertaining would be better? But it's also got to be worthy if "film 2000" status!

AIBU to ask you all for some recommendations? To give an indication of what I've already watched - I've seen the majority of the IMDb top 250 films (plus 1750 others...)

Also op I used to have "a list" too. Though as soon as I met dh and had kids I've been inflicted with Frozen and every John Wick going.

Oooh, what I'd give for a binge of Wicker Man, LA Confidential, Double Indemnity, OldBoy, L'Age D'Or and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

crustycrab · 23/07/2019 16:16

Menace to society
Speed
Outbreak
Finding Nemo
Towering Inferno
Jackie Brown
Se7en
Lord of the Flies
Maze Runner

crustycrab · 23/07/2019 16:16

The Village of the Damned. Crazy film

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 16:17

@growlingbear I like any sort of film - I don't genre discriminate! My friends, however, would prefer a breezy, entertaining film I think. Although I wrote fancy finally watching Lawrence of Arabia, I can't imagine my friends sitting through a 4 hour film (especially in weather like this!)

Also, it has to be a film I haven't seen before. This isn't "the 2000th time I've watched a film", but rather "the 2000th new film I've seen"

Ooooh and the original Cape Fear Grin

KronksSpinachPuffs · 23/07/2019 16:20

@londonloves I've never come across anyone who's seen that film before! I was given it on DVD as a present for Christmas one year when I was a teenager but no one else seems to have ever heard of it

poshme · 23/07/2019 16:21

Sound of music.

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 16:22

@NoWayNoHow excellent idea!

Okay everyone, thanks for your suggestions so far. Keep them coming! There are actually a few I haven't seen. I'll leave it a little bit longer, and then compile a list out of your lovely recommendations, and then I'll let YOU all decide. Sound fair?

Water with Billy connelly and Michael caine

billybagpuss · 23/07/2019 16:29

The problem here is if you've seen 1999 films, we are going to be getting down to fairly obscure films which may not necessarily appeal to your guests. I also agree that this thread is going to be a guess what @badger hasn't seen

Ok so light breezy ones I've seen but seem to have 'dropped off the radar' a bit:

Buster
Barbarella (that will be an interesting one for a modern audience)
American werewolf in London
Little shop of horrors
Pink Panther
Tootsie

As a serious filmy you have probably missed all the crappy teen films:
Fast girls
Chalet girl
Cinderella story
All the Harry Potters

JustGiveMeTwoMinutes · 23/07/2019 16:30

Or Victor Victoria with Julie Andrews?

Iltavilli · 23/07/2019 16:31

The Station Agent!

crustycrab · 23/07/2019 16:31

10 things I hate about you
The wedding singer
Meet the fockers
Daddy day care
Serendipity
Brassed Off
The full monty
Rita, sue and Bob too

user1471515926 · 23/07/2019 16:32

Some I've stumbled upon (so less mainstream) and really enjoyed :
Happy, Texas
Fandango
The Station Agent
Bandits

And faves growing up
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot
Time Bandits

Would all fit the bill for a fun night with pals

billybagpuss · 23/07/2019 16:34

Oh yes Victor Victoria, classic and obscure enough that you might have missed it.

Sabrina (either version but prefer the Audrey Hepburn one)
Spartacus (original obviously)
Memoirs of a Geisha
Paul (this would be a good group film if you haven't seen it)
The sorcerers apprentice (Nicolas cage one not the cartoon)

Figgygal · 23/07/2019 16:34

Almost famous is a film I love to share with people

billybagpuss · 23/07/2019 16:36

Awww time bandits - hasn't aged well I fear

Highlander
Calamity Jane

billybagpuss · 23/07/2019 16:37

Do not do 'the Notebook', its shit and I don't get what all the fuss is about

growlingbear · 23/07/2019 16:37

Little Shop of Horrors is brilliant.

growlingbear · 23/07/2019 16:38

What about a newish one, like Toy Story 4?

VivienneHolt · 23/07/2019 16:38

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zizzou
Romeo and Juliet
Howl’s Moving Castle
Labyrinth
The Crucible
Isle of Dogs
Burlesque
Chef (I LOVE this film)
All About Eve
Get Out

HappyNOTdriving · 23/07/2019 16:39

Colour purple.
The help
Devils advocate
Dogma
The gift
Girl interrupted
Wit
All of the alien films preferably in order!
Kissed (although it's about necrophilia so maybe not for the 2000th screening!)

I could list loads of horrors.

Oh god I could just keep li listing films! I love films!

WeirdCatLady · 23/07/2019 16:40

Manon lescaut. Divine.

TemporaryPermanent · 23/07/2019 16:42

Agree with Tootsie and Some like it Hot.

Something very visual, funny, dramatic or preferably all three.

Rear Window
Goodfellas
Amadeus
Dangerous Liaisons (the Close/Malkovich one)
Being John Malkovich (hmm bit of a theme)
Coma - cracking taut queasy thriller from 1980
Fame - the film is so much weirder than the series but I think people would tune out. So, The Commitments?

My personal favourite film is All the President's Men but I wouldn't choose it for this set up.

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 16:42

@Vivienneholt that list probably contains the most films that I've enjoyed, and the only one I haven't seen is All About Eve. A definite contender.
