What Should Be My 2000th Film?

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 15:48

So, I'm a big film fan, and I'm coming up to watching my 2000th film (don't ask how I know, I'm sad enough to have kept track).

I'm having some friends over to turn my 2000th film into a bit of an event - we'll watch it on a big projector, eat popcorn and pizza etc. etc, which will be really fun.

The problem is, I don't know what film it should be! It's difficult, because I want it to be a really good film, but how would I know if I haven't seen it yet? I was thinking something epic, like Lawrence of Arabia, but think it'll just bore my friends, so naive something light and entertaining would be better? But it's also got to be worthy if "film 2000" status!

AIBU to ask you all for some recommendations? To give an indication of what I've already watched - I've seen the majority of the IMDb top 250 films (plus 1750 others...)

Julie and Julia

Julie cooks her way through all Julia Child's recipes, seems appropriate somehow!

SummerWhisper · 24/07/2019 06:22

Agree with previous posters re: Being There and Cool Runnings.

War of the Buttons
Letter to Brezhnev
Meantime (although depressing)
Scream and Scream Again (all 3 of the Hammer Horror greats in 1 film)
Abigail's Party...if you haven't seen this, it is super group viewing.

MyNewBearTotoro · 24/07/2019 06:30

Are there any recent films coming out on DVD the week you’ve planned to watch the 2000th film? Might be easier to find something that will please your friends that you also haven’t seen yet if you look for something recently released than trying to find a classic you’ve not seen but which also isn’t inaccessible to people who aren’t massive film buffs.

SinkGirl · 24/07/2019 06:58

The king of kong. Perfect group viewing!

You are not wrong.
Damn that Billy Mitchell!

You should check out the documentary Finders Keepers on Netflix - it’s not KoK levels of brilliance but it is nuts.

serenoa · 24/07/2019 07:26

I was going to suggest Blade Runner but it's in the list. If you're going to have an audience and popcorn and stuff with you it sounds like a sci-fi or classic horror might be the thing. Otherwise I'd suggest Julia which is my all time favourite film, just pipping Lawrence of Arabia. It needs a viewer to pay attention, though, there's a lot of subtlety in it, and Vanessa Redgrave is stunningly good in a very strong cast.

DoctorTwo · 24/07/2019 07:31

Blazing Saddles. There is no way this film could be made today, plus it is probably the funniest film ever made.

The Producers. My favourite film. Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder overact their tits off. The song Springtime For Hitler is a glorious showstopper.

Midnight Cowboy. A classic buddy movie bookended by two beautiful pieces of music. The ending never fails to make me cry.

If I had to pick just one of the above to watch for the first time it would be Blazing Saddles.

Dogs in space with Micheal hutchence - watched it when I was about 14 - really quirky odd film - loved it then but haven't watched it since so I maybe looking at it through the eyes of a slightly jealous 14 year old 😂

There are so many wonderful suggestions on this thread, I've made a long list of all the ones I fancy and I'm going to set up wishlist searches on my TiVo so thank you for starting this OP Thanks

My contribution is It Happened One Night, a film from 1934 with Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable that is still genuinely funny and entertaining today. One of the reasons I love old films is for the glimpses of social history they give, and this is a good one for that - you find out that we didn't always call them 'helicopters' for instance! Grin

PivotPivotPivottt · 24/07/2019 10:53

Are you Scottish? If so The Angel's Share is brilliant. Not saying you have to be Scottish to watch it but I live in a similar area to where it's set so find I easily relate to it and the script is full of Scottish slang.

3luckystars · 25/07/2019 18:50

I have the answer:

What film would you recommend to us, if you could pick one film that we all should all watch, what would it be?

There is your answer.

(Mine was INCENDIES please watch this anyway if you haven't already)

3luckystars · 25/07/2019 19:06

Hunt for the Wlderpeople is hilarious too.
The Intouchables
A man called Ove
All 3 of those are really good, but if you want to watch something completely different, that will stay with you for the rest of your life, watch Wild Tales
It is a collection of stories about people pushed too far. So so so funny and brilliant.

Definitely (and sorry for harping on about this) watch Incendies too. It blew me away.

AnnaDine · 25/07/2019 21:38

Well if you’re still looking - some more suggestions:

A Separation

Let The Right One In

Le Quattro Volce

Of Horses & Men (a very weird but funny Icelandic film - who knew!)

HappyNOTdriving · 26/07/2019 09:09

Troll hunter.

omione · 26/07/2019 09:50

The divine secrets of the yaya sisterhood

PrincessMonacoOfKent · 26/07/2019 12:41

The Princess Bride
Local Hero
The Grand Budapest Hotel

MidnightAtTheOasis · 26/07/2019 14:18

Ooooh! I know!
John Wick

No, really, serious suggestion. It’s a modern classic of its genre. Keanu is at his best. You probably haven’t seen it and I guarantee your friends won’t be bored:

Wellmet · 26/07/2019 14:58

Well I've read through eight pages and no-one has suggested the two films I love which are fairly non-mainstream, by that I mean not many people I speak to have seen them!

They are:
Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle Stop Cafe

Office Space

They are very different, fried Green Tomatoes is beautiful, and funny, and inspirational. Office Space is just hilarious!

ChristineBaskets · 26/07/2019 18:55

I am quite a movie snob but I adore all of the John Wick films.

How about Peter Jackson's They Shall Not Grow Old, colourised footage (with soundtrack dubbed by actors after lip reading the soldiers) of the First World War. Absolutely incredible and deeply affecting.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2019 09:43

If you're still looking for suggestions OP, i watched the Turkish film Mustang following a recommendation by Mark Kermode and really enjoyed it.

Also second the My Cousin Vinny recommendation, but I also loved both Addams Family films.

SuzieBishop · 27/07/2019 13:44

Oh I love this thread! Well done! Love that you’ve kept track of them all. If you haven’t already decided - I recommend Isle of Dogs. Or anything by Wes Anderson

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 29/07/2019 08:29

So I am watching Chef/Kiss the cook based on some of your recommendations - I have not felt so hungry since Stanley Tucci's Big Night. Am practically licking the screen damn you Grin
Have also bought Hunt for the Wilderpeople for a very respectable price.
Junebug not available anywhere or Solitaire for 2. Hope you find what you are looking for OP.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 03/08/2019 19:46

Thank you OP for the thread and to herefortheaibu who first nominated Hunt for the Wilderpeople
I see it was recommended 5x after that and having just watched it with DP, I will give it its 7th nomination: Bought it on Prime for 5euros and it was funny, warm, touching and beautifully filmed. Lovely movie, thank you all for putting me onto it. Flowers
