What Should Be My 2000th Film?

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 15:48

So, I'm a big film fan, and I'm coming up to watching my 2000th film (don't ask how I know, I'm sad enough to have kept track).

I'm having some friends over to turn my 2000th film into a bit of an event - we'll watch it on a big projector, eat popcorn and pizza etc. etc, which will be really fun.

The problem is, I don't know what film it should be! It's difficult, because I want it to be a really good film, but how would I know if I haven't seen it yet? I was thinking something epic, like Lawrence of Arabia, but think it'll just bore my friends, so naive something light and entertaining would be better? But it's also got to be worthy if "film 2000" status!

AIBU to ask you all for some recommendations? To give an indication of what I've already watched - I've seen the majority of the IMDb top 250 films (plus 1750 others...)

The Good Year

Azure83 · 23/07/2019 18:40

The Great Beauty, although it's quite arty and maybe not as light hearted as you'd like for your friends.

White Heat - James Cagney. Fab film.

If you all like Australian humour, you can't beat The Castle. I love The Castle but I preferred Crackerjack.

My suggestions would be Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Roman Holiday or Gone with the Wind - although that's another epic.

I also loved The Zookeeper's Wife but It's not terribly cheerful.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/07/2019 18:47

Amelie is lovely and worthy of being a 2000th film.

Chariots of Fire.
Room With a View.

DP watches everything and everything and he's suggested:

Space Balls
Gladiator
Another vote for Dogma
Spinal Tap
Airplane 1 / 2
Hot shots

A bout de souffle
Taxi Driver
The Fisher King
Lost in Translation
Au quai des Brumes
Hiroshima mon Amour
Les Misérables
Reservoir Dogs
Not stood the rest of time but recently
Sorry to Bother you
Blackklansman
Wild river

If your friends are filmbuffs with a sense of humour 2 corkers
Tropic Thunder (v broad)
The Gunman (hilariously preposterous vanity project by Sean Penn with some other great actors obviously thinking, is it just me..?’

I am so impressed and jealous of you keeping track.

MamaNewtNewt · 23/07/2019 18:55

Have you seen 'One cut of the dead'? It's the best film I've seen this year. You need to stick with it though all is not as it seems Smile

La vita è bella - / Life is Beautiful - but you'll need tissues

AnnaDine · 23/07/2019 19:00

@Azure83 I came on to say The Great Beauty - I want to be at their party!

Also much better than Lawrence of Arabia is Theeb (a modern retelling of the same story - must watch it again! It’s on Netflix I think) - best film I’ve seen this year (though it’s a few years old now)

Wild Tales is wild and funny!

Volver

Metropolis - made in 1927!

The prophet

Tell no one!

@BadgerBrush

“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” always moves me. Something about it makes me feel like anything is possible and fills me with hope. A wonderful film.

“Age of Adeline” is strangely endearing. Think it’s Blake Lively mannerisms but I still love it.

“Land of the Pharaohs” is an old time classic but less heard of than your other major biblical epics.

Soooooo many to choose from.

taiwalish · 23/07/2019 19:11

This is maybe more for after the big 2000, since it's funny but not breezy, but what about a Hal Hartley film like Simple Men?

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 23/07/2019 19:15

Clerks

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 23/07/2019 19:19

13 Chairs or Valley of the dolls as it's 50 years since Sharon Tate died soon. Can't say they're exactly highbrow, but they are totally kitsch

Swing Time/Shall We Dance/Top Hat

Arsenic And Old Lace/The Ladykillers/Kind Hearts and Coronets

Withnail & I, My Own Private Idaho, Secrets and Lies or, to go along nicely with this heat, what about Do the Right Thing?

Enclume · 23/07/2019 19:28

Soviet film! Lots of charming old comedies. I recommend "Beware of the Car" or "Gentlemen of Fortune."
