What Should Be My 2000th Film?

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 15:48

So, I'm a big film fan, and I'm coming up to watching my 2000th film (don't ask how I know, I'm sad enough to have kept track).

I'm having some friends over to turn my 2000th film into a bit of an event - we'll watch it on a big projector, eat popcorn and pizza etc. etc, which will be really fun.

The problem is, I don't know what film it should be! It's difficult, because I want it to be a really good film, but how would I know if I haven't seen it yet? I was thinking something epic, like Lawrence of Arabia, but think it'll just bore my friends, so naive something light and entertaining would be better? But it's also got to be worthy if "film 2000" status!

AIBU to ask you all for some recommendations? To give an indication of what I've already watched - I've seen the majority of the IMDb top 250 films (plus 1750 others...)

The Fisher King?

My cousin vinny. One of my absolute favourites.

AquaPris · 23/07/2019 20:32

Some like it hot?

MordredsOrrery · 23/07/2019 20:41

Actually, you could do a Little Shop of Horrors double bill.
Start with the b&w version which (I think?) was Jack Nicholson's first full length film, then the colour singalong-tastic version with the Alan Menken score Smile

This thread is fab.

The Age of Adeline is a surprisingly lovely film.

@RoseReally I’d totally forgotten about Into the West - my brother and I watched that on repeat when we were younger! Love that film.

Go to the cinema and see a new new one?

BurnedOutAndUsedUp · 23/07/2019 21:08

The Legend of 1900. It's a beautiful movie and one I would rate with Life is Beautiful, and the Shawshank Redemption.

ForalltheSaints · 23/07/2019 21:18

I would recommend you watch one of Pedro Almodovar's films or one by the Dardenne Brothers, if you have not done so already.

My my everyone, lots of great recommendations!

Even considering myself something of a film buff, it's quite humbling to realise just how many films I've yet to watch! I think I might wait a little bit longer before I give my short list, as the recommendations keep coming.

I thought you all might like a little bit more info about my film watching habits (maybe it'll give a better idea of what sort of thing I'm after?).

  • I'm happy to watch most films, regardless of how old it is, or it's country of origin.
  • I also don't care about genre. A good film is a good film regardless.
  • For those that have suggested going to the cinema... that's no longer such a "big event" for me. To tell the truth, I actually bought my flat last year solely because it was within walking distance of a cinema (literally less than a minute away). I see pretty much everything that it shows, and go on average about three times a week.
  • I half wish that it was just me watching "Film 2000", as it would make my decision easier, but as I'm watching it with friends, I really have to taken them into consideration. They aren't nearly as much into film as I am, and so don't want to "bore" them with... shall I say slightly more artistic films. But at the same time, I would really like this film to be fairly monumental. Something that when I'm old, I can look back and tell my my grandchildren, "that was the 2000th film I watched".
  • Someone suggested The Room. For me, that's a great idea - something so bad that it's brilliant, and is counter to what I just said above. But I've already seen The Room (and loved it, by the way!).

Actually, that just gave me an idea - has any seen Plan 9 From Outer Space? It's been on my to watch list for a while, but I've haven't gotten around to it yet. Tim Burton was one of my favourite directors as a child (not so much anymore, not at all), and Ed Wood was a stand out for me growing up. So there's some (vague) personal connection there - but is it worthy??
