What Should Be My 2000th Film?

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 15:48

So, I'm a big film fan, and I'm coming up to watching my 2000th film (don't ask how I know, I'm sad enough to have kept track).

I'm having some friends over to turn my 2000th film into a bit of an event - we'll watch it on a big projector, eat popcorn and pizza etc. etc, which will be really fun.

The problem is, I don't know what film it should be! It's difficult, because I want it to be a really good film, but how would I know if I haven't seen it yet? I was thinking something epic, like Lawrence of Arabia, but think it'll just bore my friends, so naive something light and entertaining would be better? But it's also got to be worthy if "film 2000" status!

AIBU to ask you all for some recommendations? To give an indication of what I've already watched - I've seen the majority of the IMDb top 250 films (plus 1750 others...)

seven samurai
the third man
Raging bull
Taxi Driver
Singing in the rain

The snake pit. Old black and white film. I saw it about 27 years ago and it’s still with me.

sozzlechops · 23/07/2019 22:58

Happiness of the Katakuris
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
..both bonkers and fabulous!

Fabvegetablegrower · 23/07/2019 23:01

Running on Empty stars River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton. I also love Frankie & Jonnie with Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 23/07/2019 23:02

I’ve just googled it. Maybe not. But it’s a great film if you haven’t seen it. Maybe pick something more fun.

Laineypopps · 23/07/2019 23:03

Congrats OP! Haven't rtft so apologies if already mentioned. Life is Beautiful (Roberto Begnini) is an absolute gem of a film. It is subtitled but I quite like that! Also, Guillermo del Torro's Orphanage was stupendous as was Pan's Labyrinth. Smile

NavyBlueHue · 23/07/2019 23:05

@BadgerBrush you’ve the same quirk as the character James Halliday from the movie Ready Player One (a great film!). He catalogued all movies he watched too. So it’s quite fitting really.

Laineypopps · 23/07/2019 23:05

@ALittleBitAlexis Delicatessen is phenomenal! Loved it!

Laineypopps · 23/07/2019 23:07

@H2OH20Everywhere

Yes, it is a masterpiece!!! Probably my most fave film.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/07/2019 23:13

These may have been mentioned upthread - but if not how about,
Les Diaboliques ( the 1955 original, not the shit remake).
Or either of two Ealing comedies that I think are near to perfect films; The Ladykillers and Kind Hearts and Coronets.

Tavannach · 23/07/2019 23:15

Diva.

The bigger the screen the better. It's stylish and fun and visually superb.

EugenesAxe · 23/07/2019 23:18

Wow - right skim reading the suggestions I especially agreed with these:

Hunt for the Wilderpeople - just watched; very funny
Shooting Fish
My Life As A Dog
Little Miss Sunshine
The Breakfast Club
Jean de Florette/ Manson des Sources
Napoleon Dynamite
Strictly Ballroom

I’m going to add:
The Scarlet Pimpernel (w/A. Andrews)
The Sure Thing
The Green Ray/ La Rayon Vert
The Cook, The Thief etc.
Call Me By Your Name
Much Ado About Nothing (Branagh version - but primarily for Michael Keaton)

EugenesAxe · 23/07/2019 23:25

Manon not bloody Manson.

I also love all the Ghibli films. A couple more:

Cyrano de Bergerac
Jagged Edge

EugenesAxe · 23/07/2019 23:26

And you presumably saw Stardust? That’s awesome; like Princess Bride but you must surely have watched.

twistyturnycurlywhirly · 23/07/2019 23:31

BENNY AND JOON

twistyturnycurlywhirly · 23/07/2019 23:33

The Nines is interesting

colouringinpro · 23/07/2019 23:46

Another rec for Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

also Enchanted April, pure feel good in the Italian sunshine. Charming and heartwarming.

Son of Rambo. Great little film.

You've probably seen it, if not Arrival. Way more than a science fiction film. Insightful and touching.

Dr Zhivago is amazing, long, but a cooler watch than Lawrence of Arabia.

Or one of the old classic US musicals - Oklahoma! Seven brides for seven brothers?

ET?!

Gone with the Wind!

Hillfarmer · 23/07/2019 23:56

Anything directed by Peter Weir -

Picnic at Hanging Rock,
The Year of Living Dangerously,
Witness - (if you’ve not seen this, you must)
and The Truman Show, to name a few.

3 Black and white Hitchcocks-
Rebecca,
39 Steps,
The Lady Vanishes. All fantastic.

Silence of the Lambs.

The Happiest Days of your Life - Delightful, 1950 fabulous mayhem comedy with Margaret Rutherford, Alastair Sim, Joyce Grenfell and manny many more.

My go-to film...Went the Day Well? - a what if? WWII movie, ahead of its time, wonderful cast, lists of strong women characters and featuring a very young Thora Hird!

MamaOomMowWow · 24/07/2019 00:31

You like films that are so bad they are good? I've never seen Plan 9 but would recommend the following if you can track them down:

Gymkata - this was a badly thought through vehicle for an American gymnastics star. He plays the hero who goes to a country called Parmestan where he can use his gymnastics skills to kick ass
Here's the trailer: m.youtube.com/watch?v=vJYbqpUnfJ0

American Paycho 2 - Christian Bale obviously wanted nothing to do with this so Mila Kunis is the new serial killer as she was babysat by Patrick Bateman IIRC. She is a student who wants to work catching serial killers for the FBI, but her grades aren't good enough to secure the coveted internship so she'll just have to bump off the best students of course. William Shatner also stars.

SgtFredColon · 24/07/2019 00:46

I wonder how many films I’ve seen! I reckon I’ve read 2000 books alright but I don’t think I’ve seen as many films.

Goodbye Lenin sprung to mind for me but no doubt you’ve already seen it.

Stargazypies · 24/07/2019 00:59

How about the Inn of the Sixth Happiness (with Ingrid Bergman) it’s an excellent film.

Stargazypies · 24/07/2019 01:02

Have you seen The Great Escape?
Or, Empire of the Sun?
High Noon?

All classics!

CharlesLeeRay · 24/07/2019 01:11

Have you seen the new Lion King? The new Jungle Book?

CharlesLeeRay · 24/07/2019 01:11

Or a netflix original film?

HelpMeHelpMeINeedARemedy · 24/07/2019 01:28

@edwinbear Oh my god! I was literally coming on here to write that! I think it's one of the most, if not the most emotional film I have ever seen.
