What Should Be My 2000th Film?

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 15:48

So, I'm a big film fan, and I'm coming up to watching my 2000th film (don't ask how I know, I'm sad enough to have kept track).

I'm having some friends over to turn my 2000th film into a bit of an event - we'll watch it on a big projector, eat popcorn and pizza etc. etc, which will be really fun.

The problem is, I don't know what film it should be! It's difficult, because I want it to be a really good film, but how would I know if I haven't seen it yet? I was thinking something epic, like Lawrence of Arabia, but think it'll just bore my friends, so naive something light and entertaining would be better? But it's also got to be worthy if "film 2000" status!

AIBU to ask you all for some recommendations? To give an indication of what I've already watched - I've seen the majority of the IMDb top 250 films (plus 1750 others...)

Ooh and kikujiro, really underrated feelgood Takeshi Kitano.

thatgoesinthere · 23/07/2019 21:30

Whoever said Wilt Stillman. I agree.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 23/07/2019 21:30

Perm
Little Miss Sunshine
Bad Words

thatgoesinthere · 23/07/2019 21:32

I love Plan 9. If you've seen The Room then I presume you've already watched The Disaster Artist.

hunt for the wilderpeople

nicslackey · 23/07/2019 21:38

Wild Tales
An Argentinean film but don't let that put you off. It's a number of quirky and humorous stories linked by a common theme. Really good fun and well paced with a few omg moments!
Midnight in Paris is light and kind of fun spotting all the historical characters

How do you keep count?
What about films you don't finish? Say you start and either don't like it, get interrupted, and never get back to it.

Having kids means I have watched the first half of lots of films but been gatecrashed my little ones.
What about movies you watch again- do they count? I have watched many films twice, and some of my favourites several times.

Do you keep track of other things in your life? Lovers? Haircuts? Toothbushes?

How do you keep track? A notebook?

Seems so bizarre to me.

merrymouse · 23/07/2019 21:51

I'm also intrigued by the tracking.

I suppose a short cut to tracking films watched would be to tick off films watched in a film guide.

BadgerBrush · 23/07/2019 22:08

@speakout @merrymouse

That's a lot of questions. I currently keep track in two ways - I have a notebook, in which I mark down films within a particular year. For instance, in 2018, I watched 160, each marked from 1 - 160. Then at the beginning of this year, I started that count again, from 1. I'm currently on 124 films for this year.

The other way I keep track, is by ticking them off on IMDb. That gives me the overall count - currently 1987.

I have never stopped a film half way through and not gone back to it. Sure, I've paused films and watched them over a couple of days, but I've always gone back to it. And I've never walked out of a film in the cinema. Sometimes a bad films can turn into a great one within the last 10 minutes.

Films I watch multiple times are not including in my count (otherwise it would be in the ten of thousands, I'm sure - the amount of times I watched Aladdin as a child!).

Other things in my life are much easier to keep track of - I've had one girlfriend, and I shave my head every three days, so it's fairly easy to calculate if I needed. I do not. I also not care about how toothbrushes I have gone through.

In all seriousness, it's been really interesting to keep track. In my notebook, I'll write which number film of the year it's been, the film title and the date. Looking back through the book is like looking through a diary. Films I felt I watched just a few months ago, were actually watched a couple of years ago. It's fascinating.

I don't know. I guess it's just my quirk.

Priceless, a wonderful French movie that is utterly charming. If you haven’t seen it already I promise this is your 2000th movie and your friends will all love it too.

CantstandmLMs · 23/07/2019 22:24

Would have to be Pulp Fiction for me!

londonloves · 23/07/2019 22:26

I think the tracking is brilliant and I WISH I had done this with books and films. I'm starting it off for my son.
Whatever you choose, I hope you have an amazing party.

dudsville · 23/07/2019 22:28

I honestly think Lawrence of Arabia is gripping, you could offer to host over two nights? Or just allow those who truly want to watch it to attend and do a 2001st film with tiger light weights!?

overnightangel · 23/07/2019 22:29

another vote for cinema Paradiso

londonloves · 23/07/2019 22:31

OMG I can't believe I missed my all time fave, A Cutting Edge - it's a proper cheesy romance about ice skating. Super feel good.
Maybe not epic enough for 2000th but I looooove it!
Oooooh... Cool Runnings!

PeterRabbitsBlueCoat · 23/07/2019 22:34

The Sting.

SinkGirl · 23/07/2019 22:43

Ooh, I know - very few people seem to have seen Mr. Nobody which is a brilliant film. No idea why it’s rarely mentioned.

NCforthis2019 · 23/07/2019 22:46

ALIENS

The Abyss

The Three Amigos

MimsyBorogroves · 23/07/2019 22:50

Donnie Darko. Greatest film ever.

BreakfastAtLitanies · 23/07/2019 22:52

Hotel Rwanda, Breakfast at Tiffany's or Gorillas in the Mist?

Good luck picking OP

Spinnaret · 23/07/2019 22:57

Le Salaire de la Peur. The original version from 1953 with Yves Montand. I would urge anyone who hasn't seen it to watch it.

One of my favourite films growing up was Modesty Blaise. It is a cheesy 1960s spoof spy movie. No idea if it would stand the test of time, but I loved it.
