To get irrationally annoyed with people on social media boasting about how they've never watched Game of Thrones? (Lighthearted)

Ive noticed a lot over the past few weeks lots meme sharing 'I'm part of the 1% who's never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones' and similar. Why? That's fine if you don't want to watch it, but why tell everyone? It's seems excludive to GOT as well. Never before have I come across so much boasting not watching something that's popular

From off the top of my head Ive never seen a single Marvel Film, watched The Walking Dead, Lord of The Rings or Star Wars. I don't however spam my feed with silly memes trying to look like I'm superior for this.

I don't know whether to pity them or envy them? (Envy because they could always decide to watch it from the start for the very first time).

There's lots of things I haven't watched but I don't feel the need to proudly gob off on social media.
If they haven't watched it then the more fool them.... they're missing out

tinytemper66 · 01/05/2019 15:27

I watched the first series but the violence and sex scenes put me off.

Sarcelle · 01/05/2019 15:27

I have never watch it, but it not really something boast worthy.

DontVisitMe · 01/05/2019 15:28

Annoys me too. It's not clever to have not watched a TV show. Just let us enjoy it.

Those memes aren't just for GoT. I've seen them for Star Wars, Bond films, and Sherlock. I remember because I get annoyed by the blatantly made up statistic. It's always 1%.

I actually haven't seen GoT, or any of the others I've just listed above, but I've never bothered to announce that to anyone. The weird virtue signalling about not having watched a particular programme bemuses rather than annoys me. The fake statistic definitely annoys me for real.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/05/2019 15:28

I haven’t watched it. I tell people when they discuss it in a group I’m in so they know why I cannot join the conversation.

It’s not boasting, I watch enough other rubbish on the telly.

pigsDOfly · 01/05/2019 15:29

There are many, many television programmes and films I've managed not to watch in my fairly long, so far, life.

Oddly enough, I've never felt the need to make a list of them and inform anyone on social media.

DontVisitMe · 01/05/2019 15:29

It's not exclusive to GoT though. You see it a lot with Harry Potter too.

WillGymForPizza · 01/05/2019 15:29

That's fine tiny. At least you have it a go.

People are so strange about these things, liking or not liking a piece of media isn’t a personality

GreytExpectations · 01/05/2019 15:30

Agree with you OP. Its the whole "I'm so cool and different because i'm NOT into the most popular TV show/movie/band/book". People love to think they are "Unique" by not following a trend. It just makes me roll my eyes as they only make themselves look like massive attention seekers. My BIL used to be like that to an extent and i'd always call him out on it.

Winterfellismyhome · 01/05/2019 15:30

Not liking popular things isnt a personality trait

Winterfellismyhome · 01/05/2019 15:31

Cross post @Sparklesocks Grin

HimalayanPinkSalt · 01/05/2019 15:31

It doesn't really anniy me but I don't see why anyone would think it's something they need to announce. I did enjoy this tweet though!

WillGymForPizza · 01/05/2019 15:31

Yes it's really strange isn't it? I wonder if it's because is so popular and talked about that they feel like they are missing out so they are trying to deflect from that?

No YANBU!

I caught up with the whole of Game of Thrones from the start, just after the penultimate series. It's great!

Zduse · 01/05/2019 15:34

I've seen it across lots of fandoms not just this show. So much of social media is pointless shit posting! At least a convo could happen out of this, to ask why they haven't watched x.

EmeraldShamrock · 01/05/2019 15:35

Who cares if someone has watched it, silly memes.
I have not watched it DP thinks I am an outcast a total weirdo, I only have 4 hours a week to watch tv. I already have my favourite programmes recorded.
I might watch it when the DC grow up.

GreytExpectations · 01/05/2019 15:35

@WillGymForPizza I think its just this whole thing about thinking it makes them unique and cool for not being into something popular. Almost like a "Look how much better i am than most the population!" Drives me crazy

Halloumimuffin · 01/05/2019 15:35

I think what you said is true - they are trying to make up for being left out of conversations by pretending that actually, liking popular things is lame and they are much cooler.

It annoys me with football as well. When the world cup is on 'oh is the kicky ball on? Did someone get a point in the kicky ball?' like great, aren't you so superior for being ignorant of one of the most popular things on the planet.

FadedRed · 01/05/2019 15:36

There used to be a programme on BBC radio called “I’ve never see Star Wars” where ‘slebs’ we’re challenged to see films or tv shows/read books/do physical things they’d never done before because they thought it wasn’t them, and report back whether they’d enjoyed it/changed their minds. Perhaps they should bring it back but renamed.

FadedRed · 01/05/2019 15:37

*we’re should be were.

bellinisurge · 01/05/2019 15:38

Never watched more than a part episode from season 1 that seemed to have themes to adult for my delicate sensibilities Grin. Everyone assumes everyone has seen it. Like Downton Abbey which is too tedious for my delicate sensibilities and Poldark which can never replace the Robin Ellis/Angharad Rees version I watched as a teenager.
I haven't watched those. I chuckle and "like " any FB friends who say they haven't either. I didn't realise how small and envious this makes me 😂😂😂

Childrenofthestones · 01/05/2019 15:38

The whole thing passed over our heads and we never saw any of it.
Then my brother lent me a copy on DVD.
Oh my god ....brilliant.
One thing is for certain though, if we haven't binge watched it and it had been 7 years since we saw the first episode there is no way I would remember half the characters or who killed who or who s Who.
