To get irrationally annoyed with people on social media boasting about how they've never watched Game of Thrones? (Lighthearted)

Ive noticed a lot over the past few weeks lots meme sharing 'I'm part of the 1% who's never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones' and similar. Why? That's fine if you don't want to watch it, but why tell everyone? It's seems excludive to GOT as well. Never before have I come across so much boasting not watching something that's popular

From off the top of my head Ive never seen a single Marvel Film, watched The Walking Dead, Lord of The Rings or Star Wars. I don't however spam my feed with silly memes trying to look like I'm superior for this.

I don't know whether to pity them or envy them? (Envy because they could always decide to watch it from the start for the very first time).

Posting a meme about not watching it isn't spoiling it for those that do though.
I'm obssessed with Harry Potter and I've seen similar ones about HP I just laugh as some are funny or shrug or sometimes ask how come you never read it. I agree with bertie and a lot of it is probably to do with the massive bombardment! Often trending on twitter etc so not surprised by people posting memes about not seeing it.

BogglesGoggles · 01/05/2019 20:53

I didn’t realise this was a thing I could boast about.

MeganChips · 01/05/2019 20:56

People not watching it or even proclaiming they’ve never watched it doesn’t really bother me. It’s those who claim it’s shit (or any of the other popular programs) without ever having seen it that I find annoying. It just comes across as superior.

It’s the reason I ended up reading all 3 fifty shades books. I had heard they were pretty bad but wanted my own opinion. I’m glad I read them although they will never have a re-read.

I don’t particularly enjoy soaps, x-factor, strictly etc but if others enjoy them, crack on and seeing it on social media doesn’t bother me one iota. I will happily watch crap like Dinner Dates though so there’s certainly no element of superiority going on!

JaggyJumper · 01/05/2019 21:24

I have seen these posted and don’t understand the need. There is plenty things that some watch and others don’t!
Saying that I’m one of the lucky ones who hadn’t watched it because I’m not into fantasy and with all the hype it’s made me curious and I’m now hooked. Nearly finished season one in 2 evenings

It's actually 73.6% of all statistics are made up Wink, but fine to substitute any number, of course.

Hippee · 01/05/2019 21:29

Originally it was 73.6% of all statistics are made up Wink, but I guess you need to account for inflation - probably nearer 99% now. Fake News.

Hippee · 01/05/2019 21:30

Oops - pressed too soon.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 01/05/2019 21:32

Game of Thrones is like the old saying about War and Peace - I want to have seen it, but not to spend hours watching it!
I also feel like the only person in the world who hasn't watched Avengers Endgame or any of the others (I didn't even know they were a thing until this one came out Blush)

Gth1234 · 01/05/2019 21:48

I've never watched it or read it.

I much prefer good SF to Fantasy ( and I don't mean Dragonquest)

DH bought a box-set of GOT for us to watch together. However, the gratuitous sex and violence scenes (first disk - lady with great tits got them out for no reason whatsoever, shagged, then other people were killed in a very violent way) turned us off frankly. Just seemed like too much too soon. So I haven't watched it since. I really wanted to enjoy it, but didn't.

llangennith · 02/05/2019 00:17

I'm quite envious of all those (saddos) who haven't started watching GoT as they've got so many episodes to look forward to. I love it!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/05/2019 09:36

It could be argued, of course that the "saddos" are the ones over invested in this Blood and Tits Tale.

And you will have to agree that Emilia Clarke thinks acting happens when you move your eyebrows, a lot.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 02/05/2019 09:43

I've seen far more people whining about these "boasting" posts than I have the boasting posts themselves.

I actually hate people asking me about GOT because then I have to tell them I've never actually seen it and then have to listen to the lecture about how AMAZING it is and I musy watch it.

bellinisurge · 02/05/2019 09:49

I agree. The tedious lecturing is a bit wearing. @TrendyNorthLondonTeen
I get it from Downton Abbey fans too.
I presume the point of this thread is to show annoyance who bang on about not seeing something that most other people have.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 02/05/2019 10:04

And you will have to agree that Emilia Clarke thinks acting happens when you move your eyebrows, a lot.

So true. I watched a trailer for a film she was in - I forget the name of it now - and I couldn't concentrate on anything except her eyebrows. I'm sure she's an amazing actress, but those eyebrows deserve an Oscar in their own right.

Xenia · 02/05/2019 10:07

I haven't watched it and nor have I ever watched any sports event but I don't go on about what I watch or what other people watch. We are all different! I am sure it is very well made. My son watched it the other day at home. It looks very well made. It just not my kind of thing/genre.

sashh · 02/05/2019 10:47

There used to be a programme on BBC radio called “I’ve never see Star Wars”

They did a TV version, Stephen Fry trying to make Ikea furniture was awesome.

But the name of the show was chosen because most people HAVE seen Star Wars, it was a big deal when it came out, it's been on TV a few times and people have shown it to their kids.

GOT is a bit different.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 02/05/2019 10:52

@Raspberry10 that is also me! I didn't moan to anyone though. My DH dragged me to see it and I've never seen a single Marvel film.

It was a 2pm showing and I know daytime drinking makes me tired. So I had 2 gins in the bar first and managed to sleep for 2 hours of it. Sorted 😊 I watched the last hour clueless but not moaning 😂

Raspberry10 · 02/05/2019 11:00

@Chesneyhawkes1 Now that’s the way to do it, if your not interested 😂

JAMMFYesPlease · 02/05/2019 13:11

I've never got the need for the memes. Its not just about GoT though. Every big franchise has their people who feel the need to point out they're in the minority of viewers like it's some special badge of honor. There's lots that I haven't watch but I don't pass around these stupid memes.

I also scratch my head at those who say a show has to be canceled purely because they don't like it. Just because they don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. Lets just overlook the millions who do like it. Don't watch fine, but your opinion doesn't mean anything for the show. Just choose not to pay it any attention.

Not watching game of thrones is the new vegan Grin

5foot5 · 02/05/2019 13:33

It's just the way that the sci fi/fantasy genre is generally treated by many - as something either weird and shameful/childish by critics.

Oh I agree, I think this attitude has a lot to do with it.

There was another GOT thread on here a few days ago and somebody said words to the effect that adults watching a show with dragons in was just embarrassing. Why bother coming on to the discussion thread specifically to say that?

I think there are lots of things where people have the attitude that this is not a "grown up" thing therefore they condescend to it. Not just certain TV shows but various hobbies they deem as "childish". I bet the same people who scoff at GOT also deride gaming for example.

BertrandRussell · 02/05/2019 13:34

I watched one episode, found the sexual violence repulsive and never watched another. What does that make me?
