To get irrationally annoyed with people on social media boasting about how they've never watched Game of Thrones? (Lighthearted)

Ive noticed a lot over the past few weeks lots meme sharing 'I'm part of the 1% who's never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones' and similar. Why? That's fine if you don't want to watch it, but why tell everyone? It's seems excludive to GOT as well. Never before have I come across so much boasting not watching something that's popular

From off the top of my head Ive never seen a single Marvel Film, watched The Walking Dead, Lord of The Rings or Star Wars. I don't however spam my feed with silly memes trying to look like I'm superior for this.

I don't know whether to pity them or envy them? (Envy because they could always decide to watch it from the start for the very first time).

I would never feel the need to make a post on social media or tell anyone about never watching GOT. However say in general conversation with people...they start talking about GOT, look at you to have your input and I'll respond with the words "never seen it", as in I don't know what you're on about... I'll then be hit with..

"OMFG you've never seen it?!?!?! What's wrong with you?!?!?!?! Get with the times?!?!! It's the best!! How can you not watch GOT?!??"

Ridiculous ott response. So I think there's often twattery on both sides.

derxa · 02/05/2019 13:44

All I know about it is it contains incest, a throne and something about earning a queen and buying a whore. Doesn’t really sound up my street. That's about the height of it. I hate goblin films and TV.

derxa · 02/05/2019 13:45

I bet the same people who scoff at GOT also deride gaming for example Yes I do.

ShirleyPhallus · 02/05/2019 13:54

I watched one episode, found the sexual violence repulsive and never watched another. What does that make me?

Better than everyone else, obviously

BertrandRussell · 02/05/2019 13:54

The sexual violence really annoyed me, because a complex “other world” programme with dragons and those dog things sound fantastic to me. I love Pern and Darkover and so on.

derxa · 02/05/2019 14:04

I watched one episode, found the sexual violence repulsive and never watched another. What does that make me? Just the same as me. I hate it

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/05/2019 14:04

Who are the bigger wankers, though: people who say GoT is shit without even seeing it, or those people at Shakespeare plays who laugh way too hard at all the jokes just so everyone knows they got them?

Trick question. They are the same people.

They are! Assbutts.

Livingoncake · 02/05/2019 14:29

I must admit that the GoT saturation of social media does make me feel a little sulky, but that’s because I did try watching it and was very disappointed. After all the hype, all the people promising that I would be hooked, I started watching, thinking I could now join in on all these in-depth GoT discussions on SM and at work.

I got as far as episode five. I failed to see what the fuss was about and watched no more. That was two years ago and I still feel irrationally disappointed that I didn’t get to join the club. I still wonder what everyone else sees in it that I missed. I don’t make memes about it though.

AssangesCat · 02/05/2019 14:32

Isn't it just on Sky TV? That's why I've never seen it.

Why the assumption that everyone has Sky TV?

DontVisitMe · 02/05/2019 14:34

I bet the same people who scoff at GOT also deride gaming for example Yes I do

Why? Why would you scoff at people for doing something they enjoy? How bizarre Confused

Also, it isn't just on Sky. It's on Now TV and all the download apps you can possibly find.

UnPocoLoco2 · 02/05/2019 15:01

Ummm sorry to add to you annoyance but I've never watched it either. I don't have a tv licence or sky tv. We use our tv purely for DVD's, Netflix and YouTube.

ive never watched it but i dont go shouting every where that i havent, if im in company and someone mentions it i just havent watched it so dont know what your talking about

PorpentinaScamander · 02/05/2019 15:14

I don't understand it either. If you don't watch it then fine. Whatever.
Someone I know not only 'boasts' constantly on social media about having never seen it but won't 'allow" anyone else to have a discussion about it without talking very loudly over them about the fact that she hasn't seen it. Confused
Another friend and I were discussing this weeks, frankly amazing, episode and she very very loudly interrupted "well I've never seen it. I have no idea who you are talking about. I don't know any of the story lines" etc etc etc. Fucking bore off then.

Applesbananaspears · 02/05/2019 15:18

I’ve never watched and have no idea what it’s even about. I’ve never seen a marvel film or an avengers film or a Star Wars film either. I’ve also no interest in Harry Potter but so what?

steppemum · 02/05/2019 15:24

I would never post one of those memes etc, but I think the reason people do it is because they, like me, are so tired of the whole domination of GofT in conversations etc.

I have never watched it, and I have no interest in watching it. I am not interested in thise genre at all, and the descriptions of sex and violence leave me cold.

There is a slightly odd tone on this thread which is that if you haven't watched it or don't want to watch it you are weird.

But that is just as weird as thinking the whole world would like it if only they would try!

Not my thing, but then I don't tend to watch that much TV anyway.
If you enjpy it, great! But do have alittle perspective, not all of us are interested in it.

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/05/2019 15:31

joyfullittlehippo there's nothing wrong with laughing at the jokes, I do that too. It's those people who laugh too loud and for too long, and then turn around to make sure everyone can see them laughing; they are the assbutts.

Bbang · 02/05/2019 15:34

I think YABU.

I’ve never seen it, tried one episode thought it was the work of a creepy misogynist with clear rape fantasies. Not for me.

And I’ll happily tell people that, I don’t share the memes on social media admittedly but every time I do say to someone ‘oh I’m not a fan’ or ‘I don’t watch it’ people speak to me and about me a if I’m some awful crazy weirdo ‘what is wrong with you’ is the usual one. Fans of that show can be very twatty in their responses to people so it’s both sides no?

The memes aren’t hurting you, just ignore them like the none watchers have to ignore all the chatter about it every two mins (which can get clog the newsfeed and gets tedious very quickly) do what I do a and unfollow things/people. Then you won’t be annoyed will you.

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/05/2019 15:40

There's another link between people who boast about not watching Game of Thrones, and people who laugh too loud at Shakespeare - they will criticise GoT for being too violent, but have absolutely no problem with the violence in Shakespeare's plays.

Whatafustercluck · 02/05/2019 15:46

Never watched it, don't deride others for watching it. It just doesn't appeal to me and I sometimes feel like the only person on the planet who hasn't seen it and doesn't watch it. Oh, and I've got no problem with gaming - in fact I make a special effort to understand it because my ds enjoys it, so what interests him interests me.

DontVisitMe · 02/05/2019 15:51

Haha, yes, or the religious people who pearl clutch at the rape/nudity/violence when there's much worse in the Bible Grin

WillGymForPizza · 02/05/2019 15:51

bbang people who gave up after the first episode always trot out the misogynstic line, however if you'd have stuck with it you would have realised that all the best and strongest characters are women. They are all so fabulous and bad ass, they own the men.

And honestly who cares about the violence? It's based on the wars of the roses, which was very fucking violent. In fact history was violent in general. So what?

OP posts:
SaskiaRembrandt · 02/05/2019 15:52

Yes, the bible is full of rape and violence - and dare I say, people coming back from the dead.

Steamfan · 02/05/2019 15:57

Never watched, no interest in it, and no TV! But that's me - I din't like Star wars, either - but Star Trek (and yes, I've got it on DVDs) is my favourite, and I'm as boring about that to a non Trekkie as a GOT fan is to a non Got Fan - it's horses for courses - don't fancy it, don't watch it!

JustAnotherMNUserPassing · 02/05/2019 16:00

That was me and on Monday I started watching it Blush. I'm just over half way through season 1 and it's so good! Grin
