To get irrationally annoyed with people on social media boasting about how they've never watched Game of Thrones? (Lighthearted)

Ive noticed a lot over the past few weeks lots meme sharing 'I'm part of the 1% who's never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones' and similar. Why? That's fine if you don't want to watch it, but why tell everyone? It's seems excludive to GOT as well. Never before have I come across so much boasting not watching something that's popular

From off the top of my head Ive never seen a single Marvel Film, watched The Walking Dead, Lord of The Rings or Star Wars. I don't however spam my feed with silly memes trying to look like I'm superior for this.

I don't know whether to pity them or envy them? (Envy because they could always decide to watch it from the start for the very first time).

It's a form of attention seeking tho' isn't it? That slightly cringy ,... I'm so different stuff.
Like telling people you and your mates are just "crazy". It makes you kind die inside. A bit pathetic really.

BertrandRussell · 02/05/2019 16:12

Wars of the Roses? Give me strength!

SoyDora · 02/05/2019 16:15

The thing is, people who do watch it seem to think it’s completely incomprehensible that other people wouldn’t enjoy it or have no interest in it. Not everyone likes the same things. Each to their own.

BertrandRussell · 02/05/2019 16:15

I only say if anyone asks. And I don’t think Shakeapeare’s funny.

BertrandRussell · 02/05/2019 16:17

And I love dragons and fantasy. Just don’t like gratuitous violence. Or misogyny.

WillGymForPizza · 02/05/2019 16:23

BertrandRussell why get so worked up about it? You don't like it, you don't have to and no one is saying otherwise? But it's not misoygynistic, and yes it's a fact that a lot of it is loosely based on real historical events, including The Wars of the Roses.

You sound like one of the superior types mentioned upthread tbh.

BertrandRussell · 02/05/2019 16:24

I’m not worked up at all- it’s not the non watchers who are calling other people names!

DontVisitMe · 02/05/2019 16:29

It is based on the War of the Roses.

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/05/2019 16:31

Yes, it is based on the War of the Roses, with quite a bit of other British history thrown in. I am a historian, I can see where he's getting his material from.

And, of course, that is also true of a lot of Shakespeare's work too.

BertrandRussell · 02/05/2019 16:32

“Haha, yes, or the religious people who pearl clutch at the rape/nudity/violence when there's much worse in the Bible“

I’m not religious but I do know the bible quite well. Could you provide some references, please?

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/05/2019 16:34

I now have a mental image of a certain type of Elizabethan insisting they had never seen anything by Shakespeare.

DontVisitMe · 02/05/2019 16:35

Um... No?

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/05/2019 16:36

BertrandRussell If you are familiar with the bible why on earth do you need directing to the rape and violence? It's full of it. But it case you somehow overlooked it, start with the crucifixion (when someone is tortured then subjected to a horrifically long and painful death) and work backwards.

BertrandRussell · 02/05/2019 16:38

Ah. I thought you meant the Bible was full of detailed, graphic descriptions of violence, including sexual violence. My mistake.

TheMuminator2 · 02/05/2019 16:38

I have only watched 1 ep with jason mamoa very nice the rest seems so boring and laborious cant be bothered

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/05/2019 16:38

It is. Also some quite porny stuff.

abcriskringle · 02/05/2019 16:55

There are loads of people I know who've never seen it - definitely nothing to boast about! I've watched a few seasons but ages ago and I'm way behind now!

ethelfleda · 02/05/2019 17:17

People like to boast if they don’t like something that is popular. I’m sure we have all done it at one point or another... for example when love island is on. I’d never watch that in a million years. Looks crap.
I love GoT though. Bloody good TV.

ethelfleda · 02/05/2019 17:18

To clarify, I wouldn’t boast about not watching something on social media though!

5foot5 · 02/05/2019 17:24

I have never watched it, and I have no interest in watching it. I am not interested in this genre at all, and the descriptions of sex and violence leave me cold.

@steppemum YANBU. We all prefer different things. I know there are loads of programs people praise that I have never really felt motivated to watch.

TBH, left to myself I probably would not have bothered with GoT. As a rule I don't like the fantasy genre and have not read any of the books. However, whenever we go on holiday we take a box set to watch and about 5 years ago DD suggested GoT series 1. DH was interested and I just decided to go along with it. We were all blown away by it and as soon as we got home we ordered the next series and then after that caught it as it was aired.

I know people are put off by the sex and violence in series 1 but, as others have said, it really isn't mysogonistic. As the series progresses the best and strongest characters are the women.

LaurieMarlow · 02/05/2019 17:29

Yes, the bible is full of rape and violence - and dare I say, people coming back from the dead.

Grin

The violence and rape in GOT is pretty much in keeping with the story's universe (analogous to medieval Europe).

In saying that, D&D probably did over egg it somewhat in the first season compared to the books, but they reigned it in after that.

I mean there's still plenty of rape and violence, but it feels more indicative of the base human motivations that are explored rather than a bit gratuitous.

LaurieMarlow · 02/05/2019 17:34

Rape and violence against women is a sad fact of human history. It's not misogynistic to explore the implications of that.

YemenRoadYemen · 02/05/2019 17:57

Oh God, I commented on one of these memes a couple of days ago on FB, I hope this thread isn't about me. Grin

I never comment on FB memes usually, but it was replying to two friend who'd posted on the meme first.

I did try to watch it once on DH's urging, but I fell asleep.

Point taken though, OP - YANBU.

YemenRoadYemen · 02/05/2019 17:59

To be fair, what is equally annoying is people talking to you about last night's amazing episode, while you dutifully nod, smile, and do the obligatory 'ooh' / 'ah' thing in what you hope are appropriate places (none of it meaning anything to you), as they regale you ...

Igotthemheavyboobs · 02/05/2019 18:07

Personally, I'm always a bit embarrassed that I haven't watched it becuase people are always like 'did you see it! Omg!' and I have to deal with the disappointment in their face when they realise I can't talk to them about it.

I probably will watch it at some point, just not something I have gotten around to yet.
