To get irrationally annoyed with people on social media boasting about how they've never watched Game of Thrones? (Lighthearted)

Ive noticed a lot over the past few weeks lots meme sharing 'I'm part of the 1% who's never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones' and similar. Why? That's fine if you don't want to watch it, but why tell everyone? It's seems excludive to GOT as well. Never before have I come across so much boasting not watching something that's popular

From off the top of my head Ive never seen a single Marvel Film, watched The Walking Dead, Lord of The Rings or Star Wars. I don't however spam my feed with silly memes trying to look like I'm superior for this.

I don't know whether to pity them or envy them? (Envy because they could always decide to watch it from the start for the very first time).

a guy at my work loves to be an utter dick head and pronounce loudly how GoT is "shit" and he has never even watched the trailer because he wouldn't want to be watching "That shite telly show- its any other fantasy show with titties" (his exact wordsHmm) He does this whenever anyone brings up the latest episode in conversation to somebody else, he interrupts and goes on about "how could anyone watch it?". It just makes him look like a miserable twat

Sparklesocks · 01/05/2019 15:39

I always roll an eye at people who say ‘what is a kardashian??’ ‘Never heard of an Ed sheeran, what’s that??’ - ok I get it, you don’t follow pop culture and that’s fine, but don’t pretend you live in a cave

cardibach · 01/05/2019 15:40

It’s the essential intellectually snobby view that if something is popular it must be very low culture. I really dislike that attitude. Shakespeare, for example, wrote for the masses.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 01/05/2019 15:40

You are overthinking it OP.

BuzzPeakWankBobbly · 01/05/2019 15:40

Because GoT is like other crazes (Harry Potter etc) where it becomes a thing everyone has done so there are all sorts of in jokes and memes about it that people expect you to 'get' instantly.

TBH, I'd probably like GoT if I got into it but I just have too many other things to watch to commit to such a massive, long running series.

AnyoneButAnton · 01/05/2019 15:42

Banging on about how you don’t like something popular when no-one even asked you is tedious.

Making up flagrantly untrue statistics OTOH brings out my inner Arya.

GreytExpectations · 01/05/2019 15:43

@cardibach that makes so much sense and I agree. It actually makes me not want to talk to that person. I remember one evening me, DH, BIL and his GF were having a few drinks and listening to some random songs on shuffle and some pop artist came on (forgot who) and DH makes a comment on how she is actually really good and should be considered more than "just pop". My BIL goes into a massive rant about how shit she is and how dare we praise a pop artist. It got to the point where BIL and DH ended up having to apologies and make up, as BIL got really angry about this. Really made me judge BIL...

Greyt your colleague’s attitude is absolutely the most annoying! If he hasn’t watched any of it, what is he basing his critical opinion it is ‘shit’ on? At least the men is a little more subtle about the same attitude...

Raspberry10 · 01/05/2019 15:45

It’s not just GOT. I saw someone who’d never seen a Marvel film, then went to see EndGame at the weekend and bitched about it being a waste of 3 hours of her life and how all the adults there were losers. maybe don’t go and see it if you feel that strongly? It’s not like it’s cheap to go.

cardibach · 01/05/2019 15:45

The meme not the men!

Springersrock · 01/05/2019 15:47

YANBU

I have a colleague who likes to tell everyone he’s never watched an episode of GoT. He talks about it way more than the people who do watch it

I watched the first series but never really got into it. I’m not great at following long running series and always meant to download it and binge watch but there’s too many series now and I cba

TheFastandCurious · 01/05/2019 15:48

I pity them. They are missing out on life.

EmeraldShamrock · 01/05/2019 15:49

I never watched Harry potter, Downton Abbey, Lord of the rings, GoT.
I watched half of starwars, I am just not interested in committing to hours of watching tv.
I genuinely didn't know who Cheryl Cole was she released a song with Will I am, I had heard of girls aloud, didn't know their names.

GreytExpectations · 01/05/2019 15:49

@cardibach Exactly! He had decided as everyone loves it than it must be awful and he needs everyone to know. Tbh he is a really negative person and has luckily found a new job so I won't have to deal with listening to the shit that pours out his mouth for too much longer!

WillGymForPizza · 01/05/2019 15:50

How can you say that something is 'shit' if you've never seen it?

It's a bit like people who say that food they've never even tried is disgusting. Come to think if it they are usually twats as well.

GreytExpectations · 01/05/2019 15:51

@EmeraldShamrock OK- is there a point to you telling us about how you don't know about popular things? Or are you just one of the people we are complaining about?

MrsBethel · 01/05/2019 15:53

Peter Stringfellow's Lord of The Rings.

MrsBethel · 01/05/2019 15:56

Who are the bigger wankers, though: people who say GoT is shit without even seeing it, or those people at Shakespeare plays who laugh way too hard at all the jokes just so everyone knows they got them?

Trick question. They are the same people.

GrimDamnFanjo · 01/05/2019 16:03

It's just the way that the sci fi/fantasy genre is generally treated by many - as something either weird and shameful/childish by critics.
Look at the Oscars for example, The Return of the King managed to get best picture but prior to that the awards were all for the production side.
Personally I love the imaginations and creativity of sci-fi and fantasy but many don't, and are reluctant to read or watch because of preconceived ideas.

EmeraldShamrock · 01/05/2019 16:05

GreytExpectations I am joining in with the conversation. My point is I don't boost about not watching GoT ,it is not personal to fans.
Complain way.

DilysMoon · 01/05/2019 16:06

It is a bit strange to feel the need to post on FB, like look at me I'm so cool I don't follow the crowd etc. But then FB is strange. I've never watched LOTR, Breaking Bad and lots of others but can't see why anyone else would need to know that or care!

FWIW I watched the first GoT when it came out, didn't like it at all and didn't watch any more until S7 was coming out. Thought I'd give it another go and loved it after the first couple, binge watched the whole lot in a few weeks and had caught up in time to watch s7 in real time. Awesome!

FuzzyShadowChatter · 01/05/2019 16:08

I think I would get it more if the memes had been out during the first couple of season where it felt like the advertising and discussions for it were everywhere and it seemed like a common topic of conversation & there were a few rude people I knew who seemed to think everyone should watch it so they could talk about/"debate about it" (tell you why only their point of view is right) with them all the time, but now the initial roar has died down so I do feel a bit much, a bit late.

PetrichorRain · 01/05/2019 16:16

Their loss, really. A friend was posting on FB about how she'd watched the first season and thought it was shit - "When does it get good?". And someone else said if she didn't think it was good by that point, she'd never think it was good so to stop wasting her time on it. I thought that was good advice.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 01/05/2019 16:21

There's lots of stuff I haven't watched, if I went round making memes about all of them I'd never get anything done.

I haven't actually watched GoT as it goes, I've read all the ASOIAF books though.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 01/05/2019 16:33

I posted on FB something about GoT along the lines of 'I wish I could mute all mention of GoT as I've never watched it' not boasting but my FB is being absolutely spammed with GoT memes and I don't understand any of them.
