To get irrationally annoyed with people on social media boasting about how they've never watched Game of Thrones? (Lighthearted)

Ive noticed a lot over the past few weeks lots meme sharing 'I'm part of the 1% who's never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones' and similar. Why? That's fine if you don't want to watch it, but why tell everyone? It's seems excludive to GOT as well. Never before have I come across so much boasting not watching something that's popular

From off the top of my head Ive never seen a single Marvel Film, watched The Walking Dead, Lord of The Rings or Star Wars. I don't however spam my feed with silly memes trying to look like I'm superior for this.

I don't know whether to pity them or envy them? (Envy because they could always decide to watch it from the start for the very first time).

May I just say re the rape and violence etc - the show is far less gratuitous than the books! I am happy with some pillaging and depicted rape etc/torture due to the medieval feel of the show. But Cersei and Dany getting it on with their handmaids and other stupid nonsense in the books really comes across as George R R Martin’a perverse wet dreams written down.

Most Meme's are made to get under your skin, usually used as a passive aggressive jab to one of their followers, if it is about GoT, family, how clean or not your home is. People are never short in finding offence from them.
I have never discussed if I watched GoT or not to anyone in RL. I believe it is genius according to DP, he is obsessed, it is to far gone for me to watch now.

@WillGymForPizza

Why are you so bothered and triggered by this, what was written in the first page? Just let people enjoy themselves, watching Games of Thrones is not enjoyable for me or thousands of other people. We don’t ‘trot out lines’ we give our opinions which you can’t seem to accept for some reason. You know respect is a two way street you have to give it out to receive it, no need to be so forceful cause people find it vile.

I care about the violence, and the rape, and the torture. I don’t find it enjoyable, get over it.

I’m sure history was violent at time but I’m not immortal and haven’t lived through said times so I’m unsure of the relevance of that bizarre statement.

Some people don’t like it, to quote you ‘so what?’ Leave them be and watch it yourself it’s really not that difficult.

Bbang · 02/05/2019 21:23

@BertrandRussell

I’m not worked up at all- it’s not the non watchers who are calling other people names!

I don’t understand the need for name calling and insults either! People are allowed to not like things, just ignore the memes like I ignore all the chat that will inevitably take over EVERYTHING for goodness knows how long.

Livingoncake · 02/05/2019 22:04

Hmm... starting to worry what it might say about me that I wasn’t bothered by the misogyny and violence. In fact, I found the show to be quite dull! Confused

LaurieMarlow · 02/05/2019 22:24

Wars of the Roses? Give me strength!

The books draw lots of parallels, historical precedence is used extensively all over the place. Why’s that hard to believe?

IThe Battle of the black water draws extensively from the siege of Constantinople, the Red wedding draws parallels with the 15th century Black Dinner, a plot against the Douglas family.

Those are just two examples, but there’s a huge amount there if you go looking.

The80sweregreat · 03/05/2019 10:20

All these type of films / dramas or books end in a huge fight or big battle scenes.
At least in Harry Potter ( last film) it was only half hour or so I think. That was bad enough.

youkiddingme · 03/05/2019 10:24

Don't actually get the issue. Some people post they watch it, some people post they don't, what's the difference? I couldn't care less either way.

calpoppincalpol · 20/05/2019 09:33

Lol I haven't watched it. I have no need to watch it. I'd probably like it though.

LadyRannaldini · 20/05/2019 21:39

There is sometimes though a sort of snobbery. I recall when I was still working saying I'd never seen something or other, or maybe heard a song, and was given a really hard time by people at work, apparently as a teacher I should know these things! Yet were I to make similar comments regarding their lack of familiarity with, say, a ballet or a piece of classical music then I would be wrong and 'belittling' them.

LadyRannaldini · 20/05/2019 21:44

actually hate people asking me about GOT

It's only in the last couple of weeks that I've realised that GOT in the press is a TV programme. Reminds me of being in NZ and not knowing what LOTR on maps meant and visiting Port Merrion in Wales and having to ask what people were talking about with the Prisoner, locals get very offended when you don't know!

LadyRannaldini · 20/05/2019 21:47

I always roll an eye at people who say ‘what is a kardashian??’ ‘Never heard of an Ed sheeran, what’s that??’ - ok I get it, you don’t follow pop culture and that’s fine, but don’t pretend you live in a cave

I feel the same when people have never heard of Mikhail Baryshnikov.

BadLad · 20/05/2019 23:40

I think got is shit tbh. Saw the first season and didn't bother with any more of it. I don't post about it on social media though..?

Monestasi · 21/05/2019 07:28

People post pictures of what they are eating on Social Media.

So some boast attempt of any kind should not come as a surprise.

In the spirit of the thread though, I haven't watched it either. Doesn't appeal. Shan't be announcing it beyond MN though! Wink

outsho · 21/05/2019 07:29

I think it’s just to counteract the amount of GoT material on social media. I only use Instagram and there’s lots of memes about it, I don’t understand any as I’ve never watched it (nor do I have the desire to...)
