Pretty is the same as tall?

AIBU

My partners opinion is that describing someone as pretty is the same as saying short or tall and as factual as their hair colour.
I guess I don't see it that way.

He said pretty and being attracted to someone are too different things.

He was describing a 14 year old and said she is quite tall, glasses, round face, quite pretty.
I thought this was odd. He says not.

AIBU is it semantics?

I don't think what he said was odd at all.

Alison100199 · 18/02/2019 07:53

I don't think the way he describes the 14 year old was odd. I'd use a similar description but I think pretty can be more subjective than short or tall. It's not the same as being attracted to someone though.

dementedpixie · 18/02/2019 07:53

I have described people as pretty without being attracted to them. Are you feeling insecure?

WendyImhome · 18/02/2019 07:54

I don't think it's factual as it can still be open to opinion, but I don't think its odd for someone to call a 14 year old pretty. I don't link that with meaning you are attracted to them. Would it still be odd if a woman had said it?

Sirzy · 18/02/2019 07:54

I don’t think that’s an odd description.

Pretty is much more subjective than height but it doesn’t mean it can’t be used as a discriptor

Divgirl2 · 18/02/2019 07:55

In that context I wouldn't say it was odd, no. Pretty isn't really the same as tall or bespectacled because it's subjective, but I don't see why it would be an issue.

If he'd called her sexy or a stunner or something like that then yeah, weird. Pretty or beautiful are fairly innocent descriptors in my opinion.

PalmTree101 · 18/02/2019 07:55

You can totally say someone is pretty without finding them sexually attractive.

Some 14 year olds do conform to our western ideal of 'pretty'. Some don't.

BarbarianMum · 18/02/2019 07:56

I think pretty and being attracted to someone are different - my neighbours 3 year old is a pretty little girl and I'm certainly not attracted to her! My 17 year old nephew is very good looking and I dont fancy him either.

Pretty/handsome are not exactly the same as tall/short because they are more subjective.

madeyemoodysmum · 18/02/2019 07:56

Agree with the others. It’s a general descriptor and I’d use it and do to describe a person. Usually a female.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 18/02/2019 07:57

It doesn't sound odd to me. Pretty is a bit subjective, whereas tall isn't so much, but to use in the sentence you described sounds fairly standard. What was your issue with it?

RussellSprout · 18/02/2019 07:57

I mustn't be heterosexual then as I find lots of women pretty, models or actresses for example, without being sexually attracted to them.

Are you a little insecure in your marriage OP?

BertrandRussell · 18/02/2019 07:58

How would he describe a boy of the same age?

TooTrueToBeGood · 18/02/2019 07:58

YABU and a little bit weird. If he said she was hot or sexy that would be inappropriate but there's nothing sexual about saying someone is pretty.

ErictheGuineaPig · 18/02/2019 08:00

Doesn't sound inappropriate to me. If a young girl walked past and he commented on how pretty she was that would be weird but it's not in the context you describe.

LilaJude · 18/02/2019 08:00

I don’t think it’s odd. I’ve often heard kids described as pretty, and have done myself, with there being absolutely no implication of attraction. It’s not quite factual like hair colour because prettiness is subjective, but it is totally distinct from attraction imo.

Drogosnextwife · 18/02/2019 08:01

I don't think it's that odd. I would describe someone as pretty or good looking.

kaytee87 · 18/02/2019 08:02

I don't think it's odd at all. I saw a 3yo girl the other day who was exceptionally pretty, clearly I wasn't attracted to her Shock

reallyreallyreal · 18/02/2019 08:02

I guess I am feeling insecure. I don't know why?

Bertrand I don't think he would describe a boy as good looking. Muscley maybe but not pretty. Maybe this is my issue.

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 18/02/2019 08:03

Is he sexist in other ways?

kaytee87 · 18/02/2019 08:03

Actually, your way of thinking is the odd way tbh. Have you honestly never thought of someone as pretty or good looking unless you were attracted to them?

Kannet · 18/02/2019 08:04

I don't think it's odd, and I probably would describe a teenage boy as being handsome

brookshelley · 18/02/2019 08:04

Unless you have reason to think your DP is attracted to 14 year olds, then I agree with him.

If he's constantly describing young teens as pretty then that's a different story.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/02/2019 08:05

Nah it's just descriptive. I remember when this girls photo was released when she was six (she's now a model) and thinking she's was indescribably beautiful. I was actually shocked at how mesmerising she was.

I'm definitely not attracted to children.

Pretty is the same as tall?
BertrandRussell · 18/02/2019 08:05

“ I probably would describe a teenage boy as being handsome”

Yep, course you would! Grin

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 18/02/2019 08:06

You're weird. He described a child as pretty, there's nothing gross there.
