My partners opinion is that describing someone as pretty is the same as saying short or tall and as factual as their hair colour.
I guess I don't see it that way.

He said pretty and being attracted to someone are too different things.

He was describing a 14 year old and said she is quite tall, glasses, round face, quite pretty.
I thought this was odd. He says not.

Yes, pretty much. It depends on the individual. People tend to comment on attractiveness rather than unattractiveness though, although clearly some do that too,

I'm really not understanding this, I just googled Mary beard and she looks like a perfectly pleasant woman, she's clearly neither ugly or unattractive, what a horrible thing to say about anyone.

And I've heard way more said about piers Morgan's looks than i ever have about Mary beard.

OK, my DP is a teacher and I would royally kick off if he called a student pretty. I would find it so odd because I don't think you should think of students in terms of looks. I'm probably in a minority here, but 14 is just odd to me.
My issue with it stems from the amount of sexual / inappropriate relationship cases there are on the NCTL

Firstly it’s quite a well known thing that Mary Beard has been repeatedly attacked on the internet for being ‘ugly’ - but really as a poster above says for not conforming to how people want women in tv to look. So I don’t think it’s who the poster is following that’s the issue...

Secondly attacking a historian who presents programmes purely for their looks is absolutely nothing like calling professional agitator Piers Morgan a cunt. He regularly engages in this kind of behaviour himself. Surely you understand that?

I agree with Bert.
I just dont think we should go on about girls look there is just so much focus on it. It takes so much time away from kids /teens/adults living their lives. I do think boys are generally described differently.

I'm surprised (not in a good way) that there is so much opinion on the attractiveness of Mary Beard. When I see her on tv I always think that she is interesting, intelligent and charming. I like her a whole lot better than a more conventional woman like Amanda Holden because she bores me on tv.

Regarding Mary Beards looks she's always dressed in something practical for climbing around old buildings with quite nice jewelry. I also like that she has long hair, so many older women go for the chop but in her case it really suits her. I never thought of her as looking in need of a make over or a wash. I have to say that I don't appreciate loads of make up because it gives people a masked face, I'd rather see some character lines. I'm quite fed up with so many celebreties looking so samish and like dolls.

Birds - Mary Beard looks unwashed? Really?

She looks exactly like what she is - a woman who isn’t interested in grooming beyond the basics. She looks perfectly pleasant, occasionally eccentric but never dirty? I take more interest in personal grooming than Mary Beard does, a lot less than many women I know do though. That’s ok, we’re all different.

I can only think of one or two ugly people I have ever seen, seen about the same number of truly beautiful people too. Ugliness is as rare as beauty - almost sit somewhere along the line of average.
