In expecting people to read the FUCKING thread?!

Is it me or is it getting worse??

I may accidentally miss an update if the thread is really long --quite often because there's too many comments that haven't read the full thread.

But if you can't take the time to read the whole thread (you can clearly see how long it is before posting), then wait to comment until you can!

The thread gets annoying to read because it's full of irrelevant comments.

Also, just commenting without reading as a matter of course can sometimes be upsetting to an op who's in more delicate situation.

Eg "I think my husband's cheating should I check his phone?" Then getting pages of 'yes check his phone" by people that think they don't need to waste time reading the thread, they'd rather hear the sound of their own voice. When it's actually moved on that the husband got caught out and moved out to be with the other woman last week and poor op is having to deal with 'yes check his phone' again and again.

Honestly, sometimes it's not like a discussion forum it's like an echo chamber for poster's opinions.

Gah. Sorry. Rant over.

Watch me accidentally not rtft in the near future. Grin

I'd suggest you organise a DNA test.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/10/2018 11:40

@MrsStrowman

Scroll right to the bottom of the screen and click Desktop Site

Then go in to customise by clicking the little down arrow next to 'Talk' in upper left of screen as I posted with screenshots upthread.

I don't know if or how to customise in the app.

fifithefoof · 10/10/2018 11:41

Yes!

@Mummyof0ne

Go to Mumsnet in your browser.

Click on the chat bubble in the top right corner. Then go to customise.

God that was hard to find!!

A lot of posters drip feed though, so what might look like a simple post and one that requires a simple answer often doesn't turn out that way because the OP has left out vital information in the first place Angry

ShartGoblin · 10/10/2018 11:41

@BoreOfWhabylon Thank you! Game changer, I'd been looking in settings every time.

fifithefoof · 10/10/2018 11:42

Hang on. There's no option to change the colour there.

OP posts:
MrsStrowman · 10/10/2018 11:44

@BoreOfWhabylon done, it's so much better, thank you! It also transfers the colour when you access the mobile site which is a bit easier on the eye, I don't use the app.

Tinty · 10/10/2018 11:45

OP I haven't RTFT Grin Just kidding.

Whilst we are here getting all this good advice about highlighting posts etc, can you tell me what bookmarking a poster does?

I have bookmarked posts when I want to go back to a thread and read more, but I can't seem to find an option which shows the bookmarked posts.

I can't find a way of saving a thread without leaving a comment, (which seems to be the only way I can save a thread), which then adds to the eleventy billion comments all saying the same thing!

What I am trying to say is how do you save a thread to read later without commenting?

fifithefoof · 10/10/2018 11:47

@Tinty you watch the thread.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/10/2018 11:51

OK. Suggestion for people using the App: CLOSE THE APP.

Then go to Mumsnet via browser and sign in. Go to desktop site - customise as detailed several times on here. Set OP post to be highlighted and save.

Then go to App. If the changes don't show there complain to MNHQ.

Loonoon · 10/10/2018 11:51

I have just spent a long and stressful weekend with a group of people whose levels of comprehension and empathy are low, who ignore what other people say to bang on about their own experience and constantly shout over one another. It was like being on a particularly annoying MN thread.

KeiTeNgeNge · 10/10/2018 11:52

Watch it like a hawk Grin

Hippee · 10/10/2018 11:52

Still sad that they won't let you individually highlight particular posters - I'd have hundreds in my "safely ignore, they always piss me off" colour Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/10/2018 11:54

Yes Hippee I'd like the option to colour some posters in black! Grin

PattiStanger · 10/10/2018 11:56

Maybe people shouldn't be allowed to make their first post until they have been forced to read an introduction that tells them how to highlight OP/their posts, bookmark posts, use the watch function and not think that if a thead already has 450+ posts their suggestion of the blinking obvious really has already been posted

LurkingWaspi · 10/10/2018 11:56

YANBU
....but then I'm an angry aul sweary fecker, on a short fuse, with an allergy to spa days, grammar pedants, and I have no dogs to worm.
Maybe I should leave myself, and cancel my own cheques.

mooglycrunch · 10/10/2018 11:56

BoreOfWhabylon fifithefoof
I've done that - there were other posters before who had the same limited options as me. I think it has something to do with when you signed up?

I am using the desktop site on a laptop.

I don't get the options that others get.

Its making me unreasonably cross!!!!

PaddyF0dder · 10/10/2018 11:57

I agree people should read the thread.

Tinty · 10/10/2018 11:57

@fifithefoof

Ah I see, thank you, I managed to miss the bright blue button saying watch, which is really obvious now you have pointed it out, Blush Grin

AnotherPidgey · 10/10/2018 11:57

A short cut is to read page 1, skip to the end to see the direction and back read to any significant updates. Alternatively cancel the cheque.

I wish there was an easier way to follow OP's updates. I have them highlighted, but you can still trawl through pages trying to identify OP's posts.

Mummyof0ne · 10/10/2018 11:58

I didn't realise you couldn't amend the settings in the app!
I'd been going around in circles this morning trying to rectify it so I don't piss any more people off

Think mumsnet is probably not for me.

suzy2b · 10/10/2018 11:58

i'v just done it so it comes up different colour but ii's coming up with lots of comments in a different colour not just op

CottonSock · 10/10/2018 12:00

Not read the thread, other one made me cross. I expect people to be polite, it bothers me how people spoke to mummy and others

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/10/2018 12:02

Moogly I know the 1000 posts option is no longer available, which is why I'll never delete my account as I wouldn't be able to get it back if I rejoined.

But I thought the colour options still were and for some they obviously are. See what MNHQ have to say

CottonSock · 10/10/2018 12:03

I can't highlight op posts no matter what I do. Just not listed as option. Anyone else?
