In expecting people to read the FUCKING thread?!

Is it me or is it getting worse??

I may accidentally miss an update if the thread is really long --quite often because there's too many comments that haven't read the full thread.

But if you can't take the time to read the whole thread (you can clearly see how long it is before posting), then wait to comment until you can!

The thread gets annoying to read because it's full of irrelevant comments.

Also, just commenting without reading as a matter of course can sometimes be upsetting to an op who's in more delicate situation.

Eg "I think my husband's cheating should I check his phone?" Then getting pages of 'yes check his phone" by people that think they don't need to waste time reading the thread, they'd rather hear the sound of their own voice. When it's actually moved on that the husband got caught out and moved out to be with the other woman last week and poor op is having to deal with 'yes check his phone' again and again.

Honestly, sometimes it's not like a discussion forum it's like an echo chamber for poster's opinions.

Gah. Sorry. Rant over.

Watch me accidentally not rtft in the near future. Grin

To be fair, I have just been into settings etc and looked everywhere for the customise button, and really couldn't find it. If Bore hadn't posted how, I would never have seen it, as I have ever noticed that little arrow before.

I think it should be an option under your 'my mumsnet' settings, and also more publicized. That would save a lot of this. People new to the sire simply don't know you can do that.

I do also think it is because so many people use the site on their phones and it is horrible to negotiate on a phone.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/10/2018 11:18

@mooglycrunch I just looked at my phone and that's what I get too! But I get the full customise list (as demonstrated) on the desktop site.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 10/10/2018 11:19

One that drives me mad is eg, "I agree with userx on page 5". I have no fucking idea what post or page you mean - I've 100 posts to a page, others have 25, more have 50. Some royalty long term posters still have all posts on one page.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/10/2018 11:20

YANBU.

In general I try to apply a rule - if the thread has more than about 20 posts already (so no excuse for not reading it all) then I don't participate in it unless it's a subject of sufficient interest to me that I'm willing to read the whole thread.

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 10/10/2018 11:22

I haven't read the full thread, but stop being a walkover and doing things for free!

FruitofAutumn · 10/10/2018 11:22

I am sorry I must have missed the memo that you were now the owner of mn, Oh you're not ?

so why are you so arrogant to think you can tell [people what they can and can't post?

Sorry, I absolutely had to Grin but yes it's bloody annoying. Maybe we do need a 'Op posts only' option or a sticky thread/intro to MN wizard for new users to teach people how to highlight OPs posts.

TaintforTheLikesOfWe · 10/10/2018 11:25

Haven't RTFT but love the term Mumsnutterz OP Grin

MrsStrowman · 10/10/2018 11:25

@steppemum is the highlighting only on the app? I tend to use the web version. My posts come up in red but not the OPs if I can change that, it would be a game changer. I avoid lengthy threads as I can't be bothered to wade through twenty pages of repeated advice to find the OPs updates.

thenightsky · 10/10/2018 11:25

Changing the colour isn't available on the desktop version

Yes it is. I mostly use desktop and I have the OP's posts in a nice pink colour. I've chosen green for my own posts.

fifithefoof · 10/10/2018 11:25

Well here's the thing, I think it's arrogant to assume people will want to hear what you have to say even though it's probably no longer relevant.

Not bothering to take a couple of minutes to make sure you're up speed and not potentially upset an op before posting is arrogant too.

But I said that before in the thread. Oh...... Grin

Ok, but make sure you cancel the cheque and worm the dog before you Ltb. Grin

Also book yourself a spa day, you deserve it.

BrightonGallery7 · 10/10/2018 11:26

You cannot tell other people what to do on an internet forum. The fact that you do so in a rude way makes it all the more likely most normal people will ignore you.

In expecting people to read the FUCKING thread?!
BlancheM · 10/10/2018 11:28

It's annoying but not as annoying as the posters who clearly do it on purpose. Passive violence!

fifithefoof · 10/10/2018 11:28

Are we being infiltrated by nethuns lately?

OP posts:
MrsStrowman · 10/10/2018 11:31

@thenightsky how can I do this, I've been into settings and can't find the options. I use the web version on my phone, can't get on with the app

BrightonGallery7 · 10/10/2018 11:31

Not everyone spends most of the day dressed in their “onesie” whilst tapping out erudite responses on an internet forum.

Lunde · 10/10/2018 11:32

It is annoying when 30 pages into a thread posters are still replying to the original OP from last week - as though they are making an insightful and unique comment - without considering that the thread may have moved on after 700 posts and that the OP may have updated days ago!

If you don't want to read all the posts just highlight OP in green and quickly scroll through.

steppemum · 10/10/2018 11:34

I only use the desk top really.

Go to top of page where it says TALK, there is a little arrow next to the word talk, click on it and a menu appears, with 'customize'

It is SO hard to find! I think it needs to be easier. It should be under settings, that is where everyone automatically goes.

I'm going to report my post and ask HQ about this.

Mummyof0ne · 10/10/2018 11:34

I'm using the app and I can't see where you change the settings?!

fifithefoof · 10/10/2018 11:38

@Mummyof0ne I don't think you can in the app!

I've tried logging in to Mumsnet through my phone browser and can't seem to there either!

I must have done at some point though as op posts in my phone app are green.
