Night out with friends- what am I meant to do?

AIBU to think I can't win here?

Invited out for drinks with mutual friends. Said friends live about 45 mins from us by car.

Neither me nor DP are big drinkers ìf not driving well each have 4 or 5 drinks at most. Obviously if driving we'd have 1 if that.

Public transport would take at least 2 hours each way and we'd have to leave at 10-10.30 to get last trains back. A taxi would be at least £50 each way which we can't afford.

I offered to drive. However my car is old and has no aircon. So DP clearly thinks it's an empty offer and say 'obviously I will have to drive then'. DPs car has aircon. I'm not insured to drive it though.

I'm not sure what other solution I can give! There's nowhere to stay local to friends and DP wouldn't want to stay over anyway.

What else would you suggest if you were me?

Assuming it’s early evening/night why is the lack of air con a problem?

Long term maybe worth adding yourselves to each other’s insurance anyway as sometimes it’s handy to have someone else fully insured!

Mummaganoush · 04/08/2018 14:56

A. He insures you for the weekend on his vehicle
B. He drives
C. You both go in your car
D. He does not go and you go in your car and stay over or not
E. Neither of you go
F. Friends come to you

OrchidInTheSun · 04/08/2018 14:56

Drive with the windows down?

PrimalLass · 04/08/2018 14:56

What does your DP suggest?

Chalady · 04/08/2018 14:57

Air bnb
Stay at home

Cupoteap · 04/08/2018 14:57

Why can't you drive your car?

VimFuego101 · 04/08/2018 14:58

Show your DH how to operate the windows on your car. HTH.

Pengggwn · 04/08/2018 14:59

I'd let him drive - you offered.

StorminaBcup · 04/08/2018 15:01

It doesn't sound like you're that bothered about going - all of your suggestions have barriers to prevent you going.

pigsDOfly · 04/08/2018 15:01

Goodness, years ago we used to drive all over the place in cars without aircon. Amazing when you think about it.

Byitin · 04/08/2018 15:02

Adding me to insurance costs over £500 which was more than DPs premium. It is still so warm at night that my car even by 7pm will still be a sweatbox unfortunately!

DPs solution is to drive but I did get a definate air of reluctance about it.

I'm sure he can manage without air con for one journey, assume it would only matter for journey there, as would be dark and cooler on drive back, is he not being a bit dramatic? although I am in Scotland where it's not particularly warm so I might not be a good judge Smile

sonjadog · 04/08/2018 15:04

Just open the windows and let a breeze blow through the car.

timeisnotaline · 04/08/2018 15:04

Unless there is a newborn in fragile health in the car you will survive without aircon!

TwoBlueShoes · 04/08/2018 15:04

He offered to drive, so let him drive. No need to make a drama out of it.

Byitin · 04/08/2018 15:05

I would drive myself and suffer the heat but DP finds my car unbearable in this weather.

Friends can't come to us as others are going as well and it would be too far for them to travel.

Oysterbabe · 04/08/2018 15:05

Does your car have windows?

Byitin · 04/08/2018 15:06

The temp in my car at 8pm yesterday was 31 degrees.

Which is why DP suggested we go in the aircon car.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 04/08/2018 15:06

I dont understand

Open the window

Cars never used to have aircon we all judt opened the window

Albatross26 · 04/08/2018 15:07

Goodness me it's hardly going to be roasting at 7pm with all the windows down. Is he normally so difficult?!

BreakfastAtLitanies · 04/08/2018 15:07

Open the windows of your car - job done!

Agastache · 04/08/2018 15:08

I remember my first Capri. We were driving from Kent to Essex and as we got to the Dartford tunnel, the traffic was stopped for two hours, as a vehicle had caught fire in the tunnel.

How we laughed sat there in the midday sun, on a very hot summers day, for two hours with no fan, let alone Aircon.

Honest, no Aircon for one trip. It will all be totally fucking fine.

Oysterbabe · 04/08/2018 15:08

Get insured on his car for a couple of days then.

Byitin · 04/08/2018 15:08

My car has windows, yes. But there's no breeze here and the journey to friends is mostly on 30mph roads so it would still be really warm.

Option A of what @Mummaganoush said. There are companies that insure you for one day/weekend on someone else’s car and prices are very reasonable.
