Night out with friends- what am I meant to do?

AIBU to think I can't win here?

Invited out for drinks with mutual friends. Said friends live about 45 mins from us by car.

Neither me nor DP are big drinkers ìf not driving well each have 4 or 5 drinks at most. Obviously if driving we'd have 1 if that.

Public transport would take at least 2 hours each way and we'd have to leave at 10-10.30 to get last trains back. A taxi would be at least £50 each way which we can't afford.

I offered to drive. However my car is old and has no aircon. So DP clearly thinks it's an empty offer and say 'obviously I will have to drive then'. DPs car has aircon. I'm not insured to drive it though.

I'm not sure what other solution I can give! There's nowhere to stay local to friends and DP wouldn't want to stay over anyway.

What else would you suggest if you were me?

I am edging towards the latter two

I also wonder if perhaps her dp does have a point about her offering to drive habits!

Whisky2014 · 04/08/2018 16:02

if you read my post you'll see I said I was prepared to drive my car but DP didn't want to travel in it. Well, its his problem then, isnt it? Why are you feeling you need to appease him?

dragonflyflew · 04/08/2018 16:02

Show your DH how to operate the windows on your car. HTH.

^this ^

The mind boggles. Imagine a life where you can’t afford a car at all, you would both be trapped in your home. Forever.

AstonMartini · 04/08/2018 16:04

I think the expression "making mountains out of molehills" was invented just for this thread.

TwoBlueShoes · 04/08/2018 16:07

I am edging towards the latter two

😂

FittonTower · 04/08/2018 16:07

I'm in Spain, its hitting 40° at the moment and my car has no aircon. Open the windows and its fine honestly. Even for someone who really struggles with heat it can't be too bad.

FrayedHem · 04/08/2018 16:11

DIY convertible? You'll need to watch out of the police though

This is pathetic. Either you go with DP in your car or leave his moany arse at home and go by yourself. Hmm

HTH

Dyrne · 04/08/2018 16:12

Am I just a massive lightweight or does 4/5 drinks sounds like a largeish amount to drink on a night out? Not exactly paralytic but i’d Be pretty smashed!

Not sure what the issue is here. If having to stay sober for one whole evening is such a struggle for your DP I suggest you have bigger issues than air con...

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 04/08/2018 16:12

Man, what a fuss about nothing !

scarbados · 04/08/2018 16:19

It amazes me that so many generations of us managed to survive without having aircon in our cars. Or how so many of us managed to have friends and social lives without cars come to think of it.

blueskypink · 04/08/2018 16:20

It's been consistently high 20s - 34 degrees here lately. I need to drive my dogs to cooler places. Quite often I choose to have all the windows down rather than the air con on.

When the car moves it creates a breeze.

Summerof2018 · 04/08/2018 16:22

Good grief, you are both being a cross between a drama llama and a martyr.

Either go or don't.

MrsDarcyIwish · 04/08/2018 16:22

My thoughts.

  1. This thread is a wind up.

Or

  1. You are both 17 and this is genuinely an issue for you. In which case the advice given so far should be sufficient to help you overcome this molehill.

Or

  1. Your dp is being a precious, passive aggressive dick and you really should stop trying to appease him (and possibly rethink your choice of life partner if this is typical behaviour.)
ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 04/08/2018 16:26

What a non-problem.
Next.

nicebitofquiche · 04/08/2018 16:28

My car doesn't have aircon. At night if it's just sitting outside it's very hot inside but when moving with both windows open it's a lot cooler. It's only a 45 journey. Bloody hell. First world problems.

cloudyweewee · 04/08/2018 16:29

My car doesn't have air con so I just open the windows.

pictish · 04/08/2018 16:29

I strongly suspect it’s a solid 3, MrsDarcy.

I think OP can foresee the evening going down the pan as she is held accountable for...something. No viable solution will please him and OP will know about it.

KarlDilkington · 04/08/2018 16:30

Whatever did we do before air con ay! I can't imagine ever ruling out driving a car just because it has no air con Confused

Theresnodisneyending · 04/08/2018 16:31

Sweet Jesus you dramallama, just open the darn windows like normal people without the luxury of aircon do.

prettygreywalls · 04/08/2018 16:31

The insurance cost of you being added on doesn't sound the right amount , I added a friend ( with full licence ,under 25 ,male) and a months add on as a named driver was less than £20 fully comp to a reasonable sized fully comp car

FrayedHem · 04/08/2018 16:41

I think I've worked out what is going on here. Your DP is Goldilocks and you are going to the Three Bear's House. Are you sure you've actually been invited?

DiegoMadonna · 04/08/2018 16:43

God these types of thread are infuriating.

"I have a stupid excuse against every one of the 17 solutions available to me, oh no what on earth can we possibly do????"

Get a grip! You said you'd go in your car but it's your DP who refuses. So go in his car! If he wanted to drink that badly, he wouldn't refuse to go in your car, would he?

"No breeze"? Give me strength. It's 7pm and the car is moving, even at 30mph that's fine. I live near the equator and regularly drive in the daytime without air con.

SassyPasty · 04/08/2018 16:44

This post is testament to the complete fucking idiots that are growing up (and I use that term very loosely here) in our society today. Your great grandfather was probably fighting in 90 degrees with 40 kg of clobber strapped to his back and you can't drive half an hour without aircon. Fucking diddums.

Smellbellina · 04/08/2018 16:48

Bit harsh, sounds like the DP is the tit not the OP, nothing wrong with offering a bit of support to someone who has found themselves to be ina relationship with a wanker is there?
