Night out with friends- what am I meant to do?

AIBU to think I can't win here?

Invited out for drinks with mutual friends. Said friends live about 45 mins from us by car.

Neither me nor DP are big drinkers ìf not driving well each have 4 or 5 drinks at most. Obviously if driving we'd have 1 if that.

Public transport would take at least 2 hours each way and we'd have to leave at 10-10.30 to get last trains back. A taxi would be at least £50 each way which we can't afford.

I offered to drive. However my car is old and has no aircon. So DP clearly thinks it's an empty offer and say 'obviously I will have to drive then'. DPs car has aircon. I'm not insured to drive it though.

I'm not sure what other solution I can give! There's nowhere to stay local to friends and DP wouldn't want to stay over anyway.

What else would you suggest if you were me?

Arrange a night out with someone else without dh and get pissed

squashyhat · 04/08/2018 16:52

Are you sure either of you are old enough to drive?

cansu · 04/08/2018 16:52

FGS
He has a choice. He either drives and is therefore not able to drink or he 'copes' with lack of air con for 45 minutes. It is hardly the end of the world.

gandalf456 · 04/08/2018 16:53

And if he moans turn the heater onGrin

BuntyII · 04/08/2018 16:54

Let him drive them, you get to drink, let him huff if he wants.

diddl · 04/08/2018 16:54

Is he trying to find a reason not to go?

If so, just go without him.

CRbear · 04/08/2018 16:55

Use cuvva app to insure yourself for the evening or for each hour of driving (there and back?) less than 30 quid depending on car.

Smellbellina · 04/08/2018 16:57

Seriously OP is he always like this or is it a one off?

DontCallMeCharlotte · 04/08/2018 17:02

So he chooses between a/c and drinking. It's not Sophie's bloody Choice.

My aircon broke a couple of years back. I haven't bothered to get it fixed. I'm still alive.

giveitfive · 04/08/2018 17:07

Your partner is being a dick. You offered to drive. If he doesn't like your ride then he can drive.

You should get absolutely shit faced and spend the return journey hanging out of the passenger window threatening to puke....

Then puke IN his car... and see how fussed he is about the air con situation next time the choice is presented to him...

Tartyflette · 04/08/2018 17:07

CRBear has it right loads of places on int'net where you can buy temp cover cheaply a couple of years ago we put a young driver on to our car (Audi so not a cheap vehicle to repair) insurance for about 30 quid for a weekend. Have a Google. Or do you have points on your license?

TarquinGyrfalcon · 04/08/2018 17:08

Go as a passenger in his car but in an act of passive aggression refuse to have the aircon on

Rebooting · 04/08/2018 17:09

How on earth does anything get decided in your house OP?

The overthinking, over accommodating and preciousness are just....exhausting...

pictish · 04/08/2018 17:11

Tartyflette · 04/08/2018 17:17

Hmm. If your DH told you it would be £500 quid to add you to his car insurance then I would say
A/ it's bollocks -- he doesn't want you driving his car at all
B/ you have a criminal conviction of some sorts
C/ he drives a Bugatti Veyron ( and A, above, would also apply, probably)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/08/2018 17:18

@Byitin - there are companies that you can use to add someone Tom you’re insurance - we used Veygo car share insurance to put 23-year-old ds2 on the insurance for our big merc estate for a few hours, so he could practise driving an automatic, and for a few hours, it was around £20.

You can do it online and have it start immediately, or pick a start time.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/08/2018 17:18

I think the op and her princess of a bf don’t realise you can get temporary insurance for as little as 24 hours, which definitely doesn’t cost £500. That is the annual premium rise.

I have no idea how I survived as a child and in my 20’s without air con. And no heating in student accommodation. 🙄

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/08/2018 17:19

to your insurance - not sure who Tom is or why he snuck into my last post! Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/08/2018 17:22

Maybe you didn’t survive, @mummyoflittledragon - are you sure you aren’t a zombie? Have you checked? Envy < zombie face...

Byitin · 04/08/2018 17:25

I do know about temp cover thanks as I work in insurance. £500 is the additional annual premium. We have previously looked at adding me for shorter periods but that was still £50 upwards so not much difference to a taxi.

Is this a fine example of a first world problem???

I'm 47, I drive around in an oldish car, and it's the first one I've ever had with air con. It doesn't work. I'm alive and well and have the extraordinary ability to wind down the windows....

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/08/2018 17:28

I would suggest checking Veygo - we added ds2 to the insurance as for c.£20, as I said - for 24 hours, I think.

GlitteryFluff · 04/08/2018 17:34

This thread is so funny.

I don't even know what's going on anymore.

Just do whatever you would have done if Mumsnet didn't exist.
This really isn't a problem that needs the help of a massive online community.

You drive, open windows, he drinks.
He drives, use a/c, you drink.

HeebieJeebies456 · 04/08/2018 17:36

the inference is that I only offer to drive when I know we can't travel in my car
Errrr....you can... and you're willing to do it despite no air con so he can have a drink!
