Night out with friends- what am I meant to do?

AIBU to think I can't win here?

Invited out for drinks with mutual friends. Said friends live about 45 mins from us by car.

Neither me nor DP are big drinkers ìf not driving well each have 4 or 5 drinks at most. Obviously if driving we'd have 1 if that.

Public transport would take at least 2 hours each way and we'd have to leave at 10-10.30 to get last trains back. A taxi would be at least £50 each way which we can't afford.

I offered to drive. However my car is old and has no aircon. So DP clearly thinks it's an empty offer and say 'obviously I will have to drive then'. DPs car has aircon. I'm not insured to drive it though.

I'm not sure what other solution I can give! There's nowhere to stay local to friends and DP wouldn't want to stay over anyway.

What else would you suggest if you were me?

Perhaps OP hasn't replied as they went in her car and the pair of snowflakes melted? I mean, there's no breeze where she lives... (That bit baffled me!).

I have an old car, the air con doesn't work, yet I manage to regularly drive 4 hours. OP didn't want to drive. She might have said "I'll drive darling, I know my car is a bit hot with no aircon, and doesn't really get cool even with the windows down, but even with no breeze I'm sure we'll manage. I know your car is nicer and cooler, and more comfortable, but we'll go in mine and you can drink..." No wonder he thought it was a loaded question!

Sorry OP, your replies made you sound a bit fussy to me.

It's been free when my mum has had me insured on her car for a weekend and was £15 for DP to be insured on mine. Call his insurers if he's bothered

Your great grandfather was probably fighting in 90 degrees with 40 kg of clobber strapped to his back and you can't drive half an hour without aircon. Fucking diddums.

This - my grandad was doing this. :(

Blimey what an entertaining thread, I needed a good chuckle.

I'm past my hard partying days, but the best parties always happened on hot summer nights. We were just glad to have transport to get to the party because we were excited to go! Usually we used to get so drunk we ended up sleeping on floors/sofas for most of the following day because nobody was sober enough to drive home.

I reckon the op and her dp envisioned that the party was going to be rubbish, and neither op or her dp had the balls to cancel hence the non-debate about travelling with aircon versus no-aircon.

Do you live in Death Valley or something?! At 30mph at 7 in the evening you will have a breeze coming through with the windows open. My air con hasn’t been regassed for two years. I go out in my car during the day. I man up just open the windows and the lovely air whips my hair, even at 30mph.
This is such a non problem. You’ve offered to drive, your OH said he will. Toss a coin and stop acting like a child

CosyLulu · 07/08/2018 06:53

I think they must have made the only sensible decision: to walk and carry parasols. They still aren’t back but at least they solved the problem.

Personally, that man either wouldn't be my DP for much longer, or else I'd make the beggar buy ME a fancy Air-con car!
