To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

It's a joke from a TV show

Sparklingbrook · 04/07/2018 19:49

There's nothing like thinking positive. Grin Grin

Loads of people get excited by the Olympics/Rugby/Wimbledon. They are all 'games' too.

it will all be finished in a week or so and you can then complain about something else...

GetTheeToAShrubbery · 04/07/2018 19:51

Yawn. God forbid anyone has any fun.

We got hugely excited by the Olympics. In fact that’s the last time I remember such a feelgood factor.

Squatternutbosh · 04/07/2018 19:52

YABVU. Stop being so fucking miserable.

MrsMotherHen · 04/07/2018 19:52

yes YABU Its good fun and thats from a football hater

Sparklingbrook · 04/07/2018 19:53

The threads on MN for the opening of the Olympics here were brilliant!

ilovesooty · 04/07/2018 19:53

Nothing like another miserable whinging thread about the World Cup. It's not as if there are other threads you could have posted on... hang on... Hmm

Fattymcfaterson · 04/07/2018 19:53

The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur

What? The rest of the world who ARE NOT in the final 8....🤔

autumn57565 · 04/07/2018 19:55

People were not in pubs crowding round the TV watching the Olympics and shouting about medals until 3am.

Tutlefru · 04/07/2018 19:55

YABU.

It will soon be over...

MeYouWye · 04/07/2018 19:56

Someone needs their Snickers? Grin

autumn57565 · 04/07/2018 19:57

I'm not saying people can't be excited, but why do they keep saying 'it's coming home?' it's silly

I agree that it is unlikely that football will come home. However it's a bit of fun and perhaps we need a good dollop of that before we get knocked out and switch to supporting our second teams (France).

ThistleAmore · 04/07/2018 19:58

And ironically, Scotland is the home of international football - the first ever international association game was played in Glasgow in 1872 (I know this because my greatx5 - I think? - grandfather was a member of the squad).

Coolaschmoola · 04/07/2018 19:58

Because football as we know it today was invented here - so England is the 'home' of football.

I thought everyone knew that? Ditto rugby and cricket.

SaucyJack · 04/07/2018 19:58

I'm sure the rest of the world actually has more interesting things to do with its time than scrutinise UK media coverage of the English football team.

ReadingRiot · 04/07/2018 19:58

It's just a saying but it's not nonsense. England is the birthplace of football, i. e. Home

GrumbleBumble · 04/07/2018 19:59

Ummmm England is the "home" of football because it's where the game was invented Hmm

Battleax · 04/07/2018 20:00

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home?

Erm Confused

England is home to the England team.

So the ambition is to bring Jules home.

Can’t see the issue there at all. Am heartily sick of the song now, though. It was good in 96 for a while.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 04/07/2018 20:00

Erm because they are bringing it home. Just like my little boy brought home his cub of the year trophy?

user546425732 · 04/07/2018 20:00

It's from this from 12 years ago and a TV show too I believe.

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:00

It’s a song lyric plus England invented abd made the rules for football - I just see it as ‘coming back to the place football originated from’
It’s a national and global sport bigger than any other team sport ( even rugby!)
They have to get past Sweden first though.

MoonFaced · 04/07/2018 20:00

I'm with you, OP. The whole "it's coming home" rubbish happens every time the England football team play in the World Cup/euros. There's being optimistic and then there's being in denial. I can't wait for the football to be over. Bah humbug.

Lockheart · 04/07/2018 20:01

I’ve got to admit, I find “footballs coming home” a bit of an odd expression.

Football hasn’t gone anywhere - it’s the most popular and most played sport in the country.

England also didn’t invent football, which was in existence for centuries in one form or another in various countries. The best you can say is that modern football is usually played to rules which first emerged in 19th c Europe. “Home” could be a huge number of places.

I will be watching with much excitement on Saturday, but I still say “footballs coming home” is completely nonsensical. Grin

ReadingRiot · 04/07/2018 20:01

"The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur"

Haha there is not a footballing nation anywhere in the world that wouldn't be/isn't doing the same if their team is in the last eight in the WORLD
