To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

^ Not 12 years, 20 years.

Oh for god's sake, it's a line from a fucking song.

It's just a phrase from a song op.

People supporting their national team, feeling optimistic for a little while longer, being chuffed that we're in the quarter finals for the first time in 12 years, propping up the economy with pizza/beer/giant bags of crisps - all bloody brilliant I think.

@user546425732 22 years ago, not 12!

It’s a line from the song 3 Lions written for Euro ‘96 which was a football tournament held in England which is traditionally the birthplace of modern football.

It’s a catchy song lyric.

@flisspaps yes, I realised there were earlier versions afterwards.

'It's Coming Home' is a line from a song too. That's all. Wine

They are having a great time watching it in the pub. I don't see a problem TBH.

And I am not a massive football fan by any means. People feel a bit patriotic as England are still in it which is quite good at this point.

Nobody is pissing themselves about England's chances, not my.friends in Germany, Denmark anyway. It's the world cup. There are surprises, underdogs, drana

It's all part of the fun

I’ve got to admit, I find “footballs coming home” a bit of an odd expression.

Yeas lyrics are like that Grin

Frank Sinatra sang “She’s broke, but it’s oke.” and apparently got clean away with it. I’m not sure why Frank Skjnner should be held to a higher standard Smile

It's a brilliant slogan/lyric and I wish I'd thought of it.

It's from that song that baddiel and Skinner brought out isn't it?

UK had invented many sports - nobody has written about Golf ‘ coming home’ ( to Scotland!) or Cricket or Rugby ( to Rugby)
Maybe they should.

England is the birthplace of football, i. e. Home

Do you feel a touch silly now OP? Hmm Maybe we could discuss what you enjoy and call that silly. I get some people don't like football but if that's the case you can switch off the TV and or avoid the pub at 3am.

I do love that you attribute the driving to people going home to watch the game though, what is your rational for poor and reckless driving on every other day?

Maybe try to embrace the excitement and stop being such a misery guts. [Grin]

Because that's the song, 'Football's coming home'. It has multiple meanings. The 'home' aspect can refer to Euro 96 (when the song was first released) which was held in England. It can also be interpreted to mean the team will literally bring the world cup trophy back to England when they win it. A final layer of meaning is that England is the nation who created football and so winning it will return it to it's birthplace.

Golf is a joke that went too far IMO.

Maybe Baddiel and Skinner could write a Cricket or Rugby song to annoy people a bit more. Grin

Its a load of shit both football and the world cup.
I think men are brainwashed from an early age to like it and they just say they like it in order to fit in and belong etc.
I dont know one woman who likes it, thats because its utter shit.

That song can't possibly be 22 years old Confused I'm quite sure the 90s were only last week.

It’s amazing to win a penalty shoot out have a half decent manager and not many annoying Wags! The team could still improve a lot more - but they know this..
It’s all positive ( till Saturday) but you have to believe.

England did NOT invent football. We laid down the current rules which were spread around the world (no doubt much aided by the rampant colonialism of the day) but we certainly did not invent the game.

Even fifa talks about the early Eastern origins of the game, and they should know! Grin

I know Battlax, but it still bugs me, sorry!

I know lots of women who adore football !
I don’t myself but lots do. I know lots of men who couldn’t give a dam about any of it!

The song was made for Euro '96, which England hosted, hence it was 'coming home'.

Since then it's stuck because it's so much better than everyone shouting 'VINDALOO, VINDALOO, VINDALOO, VINDALOO NAA NAA'

But if you think that's better, OP, you could always try to revive Vindaloo instead (please, for the love of god don't..).

I thought it was a song when a big football tournament was in London in 1990s.
