To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

autumn57565 · 04/07/2018 19:47

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

It was radio 4, not "the rags" and they were soundbites from football fans, literally saying they were heartbroken and in anguish. One woman was actually crying about it... 😂

GameOfMinges · 12/07/2018 08:51

A pp mentioned the tabloids, hence rags.

I'm certainly aware of the story some of the press are going for, and of course of the concept of 'shooting the story'. Means they can trot out the same reports as the last few decades with a couple of tweaks, after all. I'm just amused by the idea that it's representative. People are proud, too.

JacquesHammer World Cup 2019. Could be coming home Grin

Absolutely!

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 09:30

BitOutOfPractice

There's notching in the world more attractive than taking cheap pleasure in other's disappointment is there

Who is this other person?

BitOutOfPractice · 12/07/2018 09:46

All the people disappointed that England are out.

Lots of people on this thread gleeful about it.

Lethaldrizzle · 12/07/2018 09:49

I do not take pleasure in their loss but I'm particularly pissed off that my dh is now in a bad mood. Because of the bloody footie.

UserX · 12/07/2018 09:53

Personally I think the 'heartbreak' stuff is more the press than anything else.

Have you looked at the “Gutted” thread?

GameOfMinges · 12/07/2018 10:20

Yes. To be clear, I'm not suggesting there are zero people who are upset. That would obviously be ludicrous. I'm questioning the idea that the national mood is one of general heartbreak, when in fact there are many of us who feel happiness at having done so much better than we expected and have enjoyed every second. I appreciate that this won't be palatable to those who'd rather revel in disappointment, but that's a side effect I'm more than willing to weather.

southeastdweller · 12/07/2018 10:26

A tiny number, actually, so please don’t try and twist things to suit your argument.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/07/2018 10:43

Lots, plenty, enough. Whatever term you chose.

You really are very cross about this aren't you southeastdweller?

mydogisthebest · 12/07/2018 11:48

Have any of the posters being scornful about people being upset or even daring to cry actually watched any of the games not just this time but ever?

I saw the end of the match England v Sweden. The camera was showing the Swedish fans. All the ones I saw looked upset, some were crying. Plenty of other teams' fans upset and crying when their team lost.

likeacrow · 12/07/2018 12:34

I wouldn't say gleeful, more mildly amused.
It was on in our house. DH watched it, I messed about on my tablet. He wasn't heartbroken or crying following it because he's aware it doesn't actually matter.

likeacrow · 12/07/2018 12:36

I was simply observing that some people take this stuff way too seriously, not that everyone does.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 12/07/2018 12:37

Nothing really matters

likeacrow · 12/07/2018 12:55

Well some stuff does. Losing a family member = heartbreak and anguish.
Watching other people losing a football match = no.

HollyGibney · 12/07/2018 13:07

The posters who are wondering at why people care so much sure seem to be getting a lot out of hanging around trying to ridicule them Grin. See I don't get that, if I saw my kids gloating like this in RL I would pull them right up on it.

When I woke up this morning I didn't even think of it, i was so busy getting reluctant dd ready for school. i remembered about a couple of hours later when I looked at the headlines. It's a bit Hmm that the ones who keep bumping this thread seem to be the ones who "just don't get why people care so much...". You care enough to keep bumping and gloating, so maybe you do actually get it after all?

southeastdweller · 12/07/2018 13:07

No, just pointing out some people aren’t the mind-readers they claim to be on here.

I’m sorry you’re married to such a man child. That’s unfortunate for you.

Shockers · 12/07/2018 13:39

I feel slightly deflated if I’m honest. I loved the hope and anticipation which went along with England’s World Cup journey.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 12/07/2018 13:47

I don't think it was coming home and had we'd been on the other side of the draw probably even less likely to. When played against Belguim, Colombia you could tell it wasnt going to be plain sailing. The hype was nice while it lasted though.

Friend knows a bloke who got its coming gone tattooed on his arm.. Woops! Should've maybe waited.

Goth237 · 12/07/2018 14:35

No, YANBU! I can not stand listening to that chant any more. There is a pub on our corner and they just wouldn't stop singing it yesterday. I mean seriously, fuck off! And it doesn't make sense. It was invented (the song) in '96 because the World Cup was being hosted in England. Then it made sense. Now it's in Russia and it doesn't make sense to be singing it anymore!!!
