To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

In the song it says '30 years of hurt' but is it now 52? Shock

Lockheart · 04/07/2018 20:08

I actually prefer Vindaloo Grin

Sparklingbrook · 04/07/2018 20:09

Vindaloo is a good tune. How about that one OP?

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:10

I was taught ( at school) that England gave us ‘ the beautiful game’ and somebody Ellis ran with the ball at rugby school and invented rugby. The FA rule book was written in English and they made the rules in the early 1900s( ?) or that sort of time at least.

OP, Today's article in the Independent about how the song came to be a national football anthem here along with the full lyrics, which I love. It explains it brilliantly. I remember the first time I heard it being sung by a crowd and I got goosebumps. I'm not even a football fan, but something so wonderful about the passion and optimism.

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:10

You have to sing ‘ 52 years of hurt’
It’s law now I’ve made it.

DiegoMadonna · 04/07/2018 20:10
  1. The English invented football. That's why it would be coming "home" if we won. Simple really.

  2. The rest of the world are not pissing themselves because most other countries are not as cripplingly awkward about positivity and optimism as the English are.

  3. No, the nation does not get this collectively excited about tennis or rugby. Because they're less popular. That's quite easy to understand.

HyacinthsBucket70 · 04/07/2018 20:10

I'd rather they sang that than the bloody awful song James Corden and Simon Cowell did. The Queen should have had them beheaded for that. Or thrown in the tower at the very least.

LonginesPrime · 04/07/2018 20:14

I remember the cringe but not the actual song. At all.

CheeseTheDay · 04/07/2018 20:14

The modern game, as it is played today, was invented in England. The game was standardised in England. The early versions of the game, from other parts of the world, were NOTHING like the game played today. That's why fans say "it's coming home."

I see a lot of bitterness about it from those who are from other corners of the UK. I wonder why!

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:14

Euro 96 was held in the UK. So the ding was even more apt. They didn’t win it though. I’ve never forgiven them. 😂

TeaAndAChocolate · 04/07/2018 20:14

Come on OP! Lighten up! It's a game! It's fun! I lovvved the match last night!! Great to have something positive to focus on for a change! Well done England!

'Football's coming home, it's coming home, its coming home, it's coooming ... football's coming home ...'

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:14

Song rather

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:16

I don’t recall James cordon or Simon cowell Doing footie songs? Si looks more a Henley rowing type or race horses.

Sparklingbrook · 04/07/2018 20:17

Aww.

To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense
Walkingdeadfangirl · 04/07/2018 20:17

I am not a football fan but def support England. Who are all these unpatriotic anarchists that dont give a crap about the WORLD CUP coming home to its birth place?

Follyfoot · 04/07/2018 20:18

Christ, talk about trying to suck the joy out of something! It's a great achievement for a young team and their manager and definitely something to celebrate. I love the 'someone on the radio said' comment Grin Rather than pissing themselves, I imagine that the likes of Portuguese, Argentinian and German supporters are really envious of us actually.

I saw some crazy driving 4 weeks ago, I wonder which sporting event caused that Grin

ThePants999 · 04/07/2018 20:18

Well, the thing is, you see...

...the important thing...

...the thing you need to realise...

...is...

...it's coming home.

JacquesHammer · 04/07/2018 20:18

Erm……. I love football. My 16 year old daughter and I both have season tickets for our local team, we rarely miss a home match, also travel to quite a lot of away games.

QueenOfIce · 04/07/2018 20:20

In the minority but op ynbu! I'm also fed up of hearing drunken men shouting and singing bollocks from 3 lions song. It's embarrassing and really makes me cringe.

NewYearNewMe18 · 04/07/2018 20:20

Christ on a bike you should try getting out of the house in rush hour

Imstickingwiththisone · 04/07/2018 20:22

FFS op tell me about it! Can we get back to discussing Brexit and the crumbling NHS now please?

FinallyHere · 04/07/2018 20:22

Am I the only person struck by how young Baddiel and Skinner looked in that clip? It was 'only' '96, sigh
