To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

The 80s nope - it is mostly played by pub team, kids teams and 5 aside teams. Only 20 premier league teams and maybe some of players in some of the teams in the championship are millionaires. 1000s of men, women and children all over the world play for the love of the game and even lots of professional are far from rich.

herecomesthsun · 04/07/2018 20:44

there's a feel good factor? I missed that bit

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:44

Frank Lampard went to a private school - he was posh. They are not all from council estates!

Sparklingbrook · 04/07/2018 20:44

Exactly Jacques, having a mega whinge about The Mens World Cup on the day there's no footy on. Grin

HunterHearstHelmsley · 04/07/2018 20:45

Another hard of thinking OP 😂

Pretamum · 04/07/2018 20:46

I'm not sick of it by any means, but I do think it's quite funny how we win one game on penalties and suddenly we're going to win the World Cup. It's endearing! But anything that brings some fun and joy into the day is fine by me, i loved turning the radio on this morning and everyone was happy, football songs were playing etc. I don't even like football but it was a nice feeling hearing optimism and some good news for a change.

MikeIngdom · 04/07/2018 20:46

Frank Lampard went to a private school - he was posh.

Depends on your definition of posh. His dad was a footballer, hence presumably rich, in any case?

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:46

I did say top flight millionaires! I know they are few and far between. I know it’s very well liked across the board - poor kids can access it easily so that’s a good thing!

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:48

Frank is one of the more erudite footballers!
I wished the women’s game had the same kudos but there you go. England won’t win it but the feeling that maybe there is a chance I’d good surely?

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:48

Is good. My phone playing up

kitchensinkmum · 04/07/2018 20:49

It's annoying and brings out the worst behaviour in adults I've ever seen. Should be banned from Tv . If you want to watch it then go to a match but behave nicely and don't get drunk, beat up your mates, the other team supporters, throw up in the street or vandalise anything

MikeIngdom · 04/07/2018 20:49

It is probably one of the only ways people get really rich from (pretty much) any background, and it's also rare in that it's actually the people doing the work (not - just - the managers, CEOs, etc) who earn the big money.

Chasingcars123 · 04/07/2018 20:50

Why are English people so down on their own country? It's really healthy to support your country. Is it that there is shame attached to colonialism or that the English flag has negative connotations.

Get out and cheer for your country. They have done well. The shoot out was thrilling and I'm not even English.

Sparklesocks · 04/07/2018 20:51

It’s just a bit of fun.
Let people enjoy it

Chasingcars123 · 04/07/2018 20:51

England might win it.

SoddingUnicorns · 04/07/2018 20:52

Women don’t like football??? Fuck off, loads do! I’ve managed to afford my first ever season book this year!

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2018 20:53

Not much violence in Russia this year though! Maybe they should hold it there every year! I agree that home grown violence is a worry and DA but we can’t ban everything.

emoji · 04/07/2018 20:53

Jesus Christ OP, unclench!

I don't get excited about Women's football because there is no where near the same atmosphere, history, or culture around the sport. Just like I don't get excited about Men's handball championships for example.

Anyway, I'll leave you with this...

To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense
Imstickingwiththisone · 04/07/2018 20:54

pretamum they only have to win two more games to get to the final though? Winning one game wasnt a drop in the ocean at this stage it got them through to the quarter final. We're playing Sweden on Saturday who are not one of the highest ranked countries so it's something to be upbeat about.

But go ahead and be negative.

CandleWithHair · 04/07/2018 20:55

So unwilling is @autumn57565 to concede they were in the wrong about England being ‘home’ they’ve completely skirted the topic and will now only be focusing on how football is sexist.

Please do feel free to bore off whenever you like OP (and I don’t even really care for football myself!)

DobbyLovesSocks · 04/07/2018 20:55

Not English and don't like football.

However, live in an English city and went for a walk last night and it was lovely having the place to myself! Hope they stay in to the end so I can get many more lovely peaceful walks in a usually over-populated city centre.

JacquesHammer · 04/07/2018 20:57

Should be banned from Tv . If you want to watch it then go to a match but behave nicely and don't get drunk, beat up your mates, the other team supporters, throw up in the street or vandalise anything

I’ve never done any of the above. So I shouldn’t be able to watch the match but I have to go to Russia?

Imstickingwiththisone · 04/07/2018 20:57

I hate pointless patriotism. Saying we're the best because we're English etc is bullshit. But just supporting your country in a game whether that is team GB in the Olympics, Andy Murray in tennis (yeah I know he's Scottish..) or England in football, rugby etc is a bit of fun. Lighten up you negative nancies

autumn57565 · 04/07/2018 21:00

All countries claim they invented football. Just like fairytales, no one knows who invented it.
