To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

No, YANBU! I can not stand listening to that chant any more. There is a pub on our corner and they just wouldn't stop singing it yesterday. I mean seriously, fuck off! And it doesn't make sense. It was invented (the song) in '96 because the World Cup was being hosted in England. Then it made sense. Now it's in Russia and it doesn't make sense to be singing it anymore!!!

Lethaldrizzle · 12/07/2018 14:54

Happiness should come from within, not from whether your team frickin wins or not! Football fans are indeed an emotional bunch!

JacquesHammer · 12/07/2018 14:59

SOME Football fans are indeed an emotional bunch!

Fixed that for you

Lethaldrizzle · 12/07/2018 15:04

Well obviously its only some! But it's the emotional ones who have been kinda dominating things these last few days

GameOfMinges · 12/07/2018 15:29

It bemuses me that people feel compelled to say what should make other people happy. Odd.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/07/2018 15:31

Happiness should come from within? Not from loving ones children? Or art? Or nature? Or any of the other million things that make people happy?

Calatonia · 12/07/2018 15:34

To the OP: me too.

Spotted online this morning.
"It's coming home in 2022"

Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!

It's not clever, it's not funny and as I expected it's not true for 2018 no matter how many deluded souls have repeated it mindlessly over the past three weeks.

If I never hear it again it'll be too soon.

They lost, shut the F up about it and go out and kick a ball around in the park if you're so fond of football.

likeacrow · 12/07/2018 15:35

@HollyGibney Luckily, we're not your kids, or in fact kids at all. So we can comment as we see fit.

If England had won this thread would have even full of "it's coming home" comments. Turns out it's not. Oh well. Moving on.

But you're not are you? You're still here posting more than anyone else 😁

Football can be a proxy for many supressed emotions particularly among men who, in general, are (were) conditioned by society not to show emotional responses (in public). Football is one activity where these expectations are relaxed.

I was equally bemused and baffled when people get into a state of high emotion about a royal wedding (or royal death) of someone they don't know. It was only when talking to a friend (male) who said he cried his eyes out at the recent wedding (he lost his mother when young) that I realised that these events may enable people to process things.

So if someone is seemingly grieving over a football match, IMO it is more likely to be to do with their own life than anything else. So don't judge them.

And yes, that song is really annoying. I like football but it's a bit over the top. On the positive side, no violence from England fans, no real unrest after the result. A dignified and respectful manager and seemingly humble players. We were knocked out by a better, more experienced team. It's been great.

I concur.

Somehow I doubt we will witness an actual increase in proper physical activity from some of the most vociferous. Tapping furiously on qwerty is - at a guess - the most strenuous exercise they do!

GameOfMinges · 12/07/2018 16:55

Are we only permitted to watch and enjoy other people engaging in activities we also perform per se, or is this a special football rule? My playing days are sadly behind me following an injury. It would be a real blow if I were also expected to give up attending gigs because I cant carry a tune, for example.

Actually post major tournaments - and interestingly any sporting tournament - is when we see enquiries increase most. I've been fielding enquiries today from adults both for themselves and for their children. It's fantastic!

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 17:20

Oh that is brilliant, Jacques!

Oh I couldn't agree more. Everyone is free to exhibit their own views, snidey, gloaty, unpleasant or otherwise, how would we know what kind of a person someone was or what respect to accord them if they didn't? I was just expressing that I would not wish to see such behaviour in my children and would pull them up on it in the hope that they will be the kind of person that people don't generally find objectionable and contrary.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/07/2018 17:29

I can assure you I'll be back to my running next week RoseWhiteTips. Not this week as I have a chest infection. So you needn't worry about me thanks.

I've never played football in my life and don't intend to start now. Doesn't stop me loving to watch it.

I suspect levels of activity among lovers of football is about the same as those that loathe it.

HollyGibney · 12/07/2018 17:30

Just seen that the entire England team are donating their wages to charity. How lovely. So much positivity has come out of this tournament.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/07/2018 17:59

England players have done that for decades Holly.

Joey7t8 · 12/07/2018 18:25

This is a really good point. For some people, life can be crap, and going along to support and feel part of a successful team is sometime one of the few things to feel good about.

And as said above the England players have been donating their international fees to charity for over 10 years now, which doesn’t always get the publicity it warrants IMO.

Cool story bro.

HollyGibney · 12/07/2018 18:59

That response makes no sense.
