AIBU to think this is really bloody cheeky?

We got in laws national trust membership for Christmas last year. This year the rest of the fam didn't do adult presents as we've lots of babies on the scene all of a sudden but MIL still wanted to. Fine.

So we got them something else this year, costing £180. Now MIL is demanding that we pay their NT membership again for them which is over £100! You know, joking, but not really joking.

They are minted and very generous at Christmas but it's mainly shit we don't need / want. I'd really rather not bother! We are not poor but have a baby on the way and could do without paying for someone else's national trust membership!

Would you pay it or accidentally forget?? I just think it's so cheeky!

Hell no would I pay it! That's incredibly cheeky...she's basically saying you need to pay it every year now as standard!! Don't do it!

Neither. I'd tell them a year's subscription was last year's present, and consider putting my foot down about adult gift giving in future years.

If she says yes, no thought ever had to go into their gift again. Result!

She was laughing but went on about it for quite a while. Like 'aren't we worth it' etc. Got the impression she didn't really feel like our gift to them was enough.

They got us all sorts of stuff. But we can't really afford to spend shit loads on them just because they are loaded and MIL likes to shop!

Maybe we could just suck it up this year and then that's all they get ever again!!

Then we don't have to think of pressent ideas and they can never complain because she's gone on about wanting it this year. Plus we won't look tight for not getting it this year. Maybe that's the solution!

No cancel it. Its last years present. Very cheeky to ask. By the way its cheaper to cancel every year and get the three months free and cheaper still to join the scottish one. If over 60 you get a discount. Dh and i alternate joining.

it was last years present op. if it gets mentioned again. laugh it off and make a joke that you'll get the subscription and mil can buy a years supply of nappies for lo up front, then change the subject. you should also engage dh to speak to her if she's persistant or silly about it
i would remind her in her that you will not be buying for any of the adults [ if that's what you choose to do] and bear in mind if she insists on buying it does not mean you have to give back. it's her choice to spend money on potentially wanted gifts that's for her to do, perhaps it would be better she buys for lo instead if she needs to do this ?

Sounds like she didn't like her present this year (I'm nosily wondering what it was was). Send ungrateful and rather rude. Obviously loved the NT pressie. At least you know what to get her next year and every year.

Yeah she buys for the little ones as well. Plus loads of stuff for the little ones to have at their house!

A life time membership would be cheaper than paying for a membership every year!
Did she actually use it?

Suggest they invest in life membership as they like it so much. In the long run it's cheaper and gets them things like free entry for two people.
