We got in laws national trust membership for Christmas last year. This year the rest of the fam didn't do adult presents as we've lots of babies on the scene all of a sudden but MIL still wanted to. Fine.

So we got them something else this year, costing £180. Now MIL is demanding that we pay their NT membership again for them which is over £100! You know, joking, but not really joking.

They are minted and very generous at Christmas but it's mainly shit we don't need / want. I'd really rather not bother! We are not poor but have a baby on the way and could do without paying for someone else's national trust membership!

Would you pay it or accidentally forget?? I just think it's so cheeky!

I think if she brings it up again you should laugh and say oh with a baby on the way chance would be a fine thing, all our money will be going on Santa presents next year. Honesty is the best policy!

Allfednonedead · 08/01/2017 18:22

What's with all the people saying a frame with pics of the grandbabies in is a crap present? Surely only for a crap grandparent?
Also the idea that MIL is jealous of her husband's present!
OP, those sound like lovely, thoughtful presents. Ignore the naysayers, including your mannerless MIL.

ENormaSnob · 08/01/2017 18:36

I would be ecstatic with ariat wellies.

Not so much a silver frame.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 19:01

But the OP isn't poor - she's just spunked £180 on gifts. So she can't make excuses about the baby

Agree that other than new parents, a photo frame is a fairly thoughtless present - photos are so easy to get now.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/01/2017 19:09

I think the photo frame is a lovely idea. I'd prefer it to the wellies, which I'd rather buy myself. I have Aigle ISO 2 neoprene lined. I think I paid about £120 so I get all wellies are not equal.

Aeroflotgirl · 08/01/2017 19:13

Just say sorry that was last years present, we can't afford it sorry! Cheeky woman! Because of her behaviour, that would really get my back up. She give to receive, not nice. I would feel awkward about receiving presents from them now.

Allthewaves · 08/01/2017 19:20

Could mil be thinking her gift is pretry generic and thoughtless, where her husband got some wellies that he really wanted? Just say to mil that next year you will get the national trust tickets as you didn't realise she would like them so much

Hissy · 08/01/2017 19:37

People as ungrateful as that and foot stampy about gifts would get sweet FA from me

Next year INSIST on no adult gifts.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 19:51

Still boggling at £120 wellies - I wouldn't spend that on an entire outfit

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/01/2017 19:57

Livia

My last pair lasted me 8 years. So that's not bad going. I was walking an hour and a half a day for most of that time.

TheTrollinator · 08/01/2017 20:16

All this fuss and agnst and I bet the MIL was actually joking rather joking but not really joking

BravoPanda · 08/01/2017 20:17

I renewed our NT memberships today because of this thread OP, I forgot they ran out years ago! Thanks Grin

buckyou · 08/01/2017 20:19

I'm not really that fussed Troll! Just a lot of people gave replied.

Fashion wellies are great for fashion uses for practical uses you wamt proper wellies.

I would find a pair of Ariat ones brilliant as a gift.

Waltermittythesequel · 08/01/2017 20:45

She said it as a joke so leave it.

Although the frame is a shit present. Especially because the gap in cost must have been huge.

TatianaLarina · 08/01/2017 21:18

Not if it's solid silver.

I'd be quite happy with a silver photo frame, personally.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 21:42

Hardly a personal present though is it - it is basically 'what can I get that requires no thought'.

TatianaLarina · 08/01/2017 21:45

It can be extremely personal if you a photo of loved one in it. It's certainly more personal than an NT membership.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 21:46

Not if the person doesn't want another pic - most grandparents are perfectly capable of taking photos on their phones now.

TatianaLarina · 08/01/2017 21:51

You can't display a phone in your sitting room. For that you have to print the pic & put it in something...

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 21:55

Wow. How long have you had a degree in the obvious? Grin

TatianaLarina · 08/01/2017 22:01

I was surprised at having to state the bleedin' obvious, but someone apparently couldn't work it out for herself.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 22:11

Tbf anyone who thinks a solid silver picture frame is a good Christmas gift isn't someone who's opinion I give a shiny shite about but thanks for sharing Grin

roseb · 09/01/2017 17:30

It is very cheeky but if you want to keep the peace and can afford it how about telling her you will get it as a joint gift for MIL and FIL's birthdays this year instead of any other gift and thank her for the suggestion? Make it clear it is for their birthday and leave it at that.

dora38 · 09/01/2017 17:36

She is dead right. Some people are rude and entitled. That MIL sounds like she is one of those and should be put back in her box pronto. You navy and white sound like you would argue with your toenails imo. Nobody says things like that half joking unless they are a half wit. Be sensible!
