AIBU to find the following reply about a Christmas present rude?

I sent a text to my brother asking if my nephew liked the Christmas present we gave him, and was shocked to receive the following:

"He wasn't impressed I'm afraid. Never really got into Lego as a kid, and now he is 16. Sorry."

I know I asked the question, but I really wasn't expecting that reply and find it quite hurtful as I had paid £40 on the gift. I wasn't really sure how to respond. Tempted to say let's not do presents anymore.

Basically they give you a list of presents they want and if you go off list and try and be thoughtful or imaginative you get it thrown back in your face.

I think "Let's not do presents anymore" would be the most appropriate response here, as you say.....

Lego for a 16 year old??? Dafty!

You gave a 16 year old who isn't into Lego, which let's face it, most teenagers will have grown out of long ago, some Lego? What did you think he'd say? If this is even for real.

What Lego set was it?

At 16 it wouldn't surprise me if that was the lad's reply, but for his dad to text that to you - that's bloody rude. Also, he's implying in that message that the gift was inappropriate. Lego is perfectly fine for a 16 year old, even though like I say it wouldn't surprise me if said 16 year old stuck their nose up at it. But his dad is basically saying it's fine for him to be ungrateful.

You should stick to the list, perhaps. But the best idea is not doing presents anymore.

Why didn't you just get something off the list? Then you could be sure it's something your nephew actually wanted.

Well yes it was a rude text, but if someone gave you a list why would you ignore it and buy something else?

What lego set was it? Not that it matters am just being tres nosey! Regardless very rude and ungrateful, time to stop buying him gifts I think.

So you chose Lego or went off list? Either way he's rude but it is a bit of an unusual 16 year old who craves more Lego.

Definitely suggest he's too old for presents from an out of touch auntie and ask them to send it back so you can return it.

Well it sounds like it wasn't a every thoughtful gift, but the text is very rude.

Well, perhaps they could have started with 'it was a lovely thought BUT....'

But they gave you a it, of things he actually wanted and you gave him something that he obviously didn't and probably wanted to head off ten years of future Lego related gifts from you.

Well yes there are sets that are for 16+ but most 10 year olds can do them

And just for those posters saying lego is a crap gift for a teen, it really isn't, it's got quite the adult following. I recieved lego for Christmas and so did my DP and DD aged 17! All very much appreciated.

To be honest unless requested I would find giving Lego to a 16 year old odd however that reply was rude.

There is lego for children and lego for adults too so it's not daft I think but there again I like it lol as do my girls

Unless you knew a 16 year old was into Lego I'm not sure why you would buy it. My 4 year old likes Lego.

Lego is only OK for a 16 yr old if you know, without doubt, that 16yr old loves Lego. If not, it will definitely not be welcome.
