In the bible Jesus is the Christ. It's a title not a surname. His family came from nazareth which is also where he grew up. Mary and Joseph were in bethelem for a census.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nativity_of_Jesus

Google the place-names.

OohhThatsMe · 11/12/2016 17:34

So what was his surname? Any ideas?

pigsDOfly · 11/12/2016 17:38

Don't imagine people had surnames as such back in those days. If anything he would probably have been Jesus son of Joseph or God depending on your point of view.

PinkiePiesCupcakes · 11/12/2016 17:38

did they even have surnames back then?

It hought Surbnames came later and were twinned with a profession of some sort?
Like Blacksmith, Ploughman, Johnson, Fletcher, Cartright etc etc

pigsDOfly · 11/12/2016 17:39

Ah, Pinkie great minds eh?

Duckyneedsaclean · 11/12/2016 17:40

Mary & Joseph were living in Nazareth, but had to go to Bethlehem for a census, as this was the ancestral town of people from David's line. Jesus was born while they were there.

The wize men went to Herod to ask where the new King was. Herod was pissed at this & told them to tell him when they found him. They didn't tell him, having been warned in a dream that he was up to no good.

So Herod ordered the killing of the innocents. Joseph & Mary fled to Egypt for a couple of years to avoid Jesus being killed. After this they returned to Nazareth, where they brought him up.

lasttimeround · 11/12/2016 17:41

I don't think it's known. In terms of earthly titles the most specific you get is jesus of nazareth.
Scholar's suggest the bethelem story is a later invention as there was no census in that region at ghe time and Romans were pretty good record keepers. The story would have been invented to prove jesus was in the line of David.

Duckyneedsaclean · 11/12/2016 17:41

And yes, all in Israel. And as PP said, no real surnames then.

KickAssAngel · 11/12/2016 17:43

Not sure what the Hebrew tradition is/was for naming people. Don't forget that our concept of 'surnames' is very much only kept by English speaking countries. Other languages/countries have different traditions.

Gingernaut · 11/12/2016 17:44

Jesus was born in Bethlehem which currently sits in the disputed West Bank.

So it's either Israel or Palestine depending on your politics.

Joseph and Mary returned to Bethlehem for a census which demanded that residents return to their town of birth (Joseph).

The three Wise Men told Herod about the newly born 'King of the Jews' when they visited and asked for his whereabouts. Wise? Morons, more like.

Herod, asked them to find the baby and tell him where he was so that he could worship the child too.

The plan actually was, find child, kill rival to power, carry on being despot.

God told the 'wise men'/scholars in a dream about Herod's plot so they warned the new family who fled to Egypt.

Herod, on realising his plan had failed, ordered the death of every child under 2 years old.

Dunno about surnames

PinkiePiesCupcakes · 11/12/2016 17:45

for more information on Surnames and where they come from please consult your local library... or Wikipedia..
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surname#History

Jengnr · 11/12/2016 17:46

I thought he was Palestinian?

OurBlanche · 11/12/2016 17:48

No surname, maybe Josephson, Carpenter at best.

And, despite Bethlehem being where he was born, Jesus grew up in Nazareth hence being referred to as The Nazarene or Jesus of Nazareth.

Nazareth is a Scottish rock band, you may recognise their greatest hit Smile

Alternatively it is the Arab capital of Israel Smile

myoriginal3 · 11/12/2016 17:50

Thanks.
Dh now demands to know who David was?

OP posts:
JustAnotherPoster00 · 11/12/2016 17:51

I also wonder what other fictitious peoples surnames are too OP

Pineapplemilkshake · 11/12/2016 17:52

I briefly thought to myself just now, how inconvenient it would be to travel somewhere to sign a census just before Christmas, then I caught myself on Blush

AuntJane · 11/12/2016 17:54

Assuming Joseph took on the role of his father, he would be (I think) Jesus Bar Joseph.

David was one of the great Kings of Judea - after he killed Goliath.

OurBlanche · 11/12/2016 17:57

As in Royal David's City? Rather than Cassidy Smile

The city was Bethlehem and David was the youngest son of Jesse (him of the windows) who the prophet Samuel makes king of Israel when Saul has been a naughty boy.

You'll know him better as the young lad who throws stones at giants Smile

myoriginal3 · 11/12/2016 17:57

Pineapple lol.

OP posts:
lasttimeround · 11/12/2016 17:57

I think it's fairly clear hiatorically that Jesus of nazareth isn't a fiction. What's up for debate is whether he was god and the son of God and whether he was the Messiah.

lasttimeround · 11/12/2016 17:58

Excellent pineapple and I'm sl do voting for wept as a surname
