Wedding with no food

My husband and I have just been to a family wedding where there was no food. One drink on arrival and one for the toast. We paid to the travel there and back. It has cost us a fortune. It was an afternoon wedding, not just an evening party. There was no music/dancing etc. The couple earn far far more than we do. AIBU to feel resentful that I paid so much for a wedding present?

No music, dancing or food? That sounds miserable. YANBU.

What time did it start and end?

It was 2-5.30

On the face of it it does seem off to offer nothing in refreshment. However YABU to moan about the price of the gift. Either get something or don't, it isn't compulsory. I give what I can afford, I don't make a mental calculation based on how ritzy i imagine the wedding might be.

What did you actually do if there was no music??
What time was wedding?
Did you say go to wedding for 3pm, then all stand around until 10pm???

I thought it was the done thing that the wedding present cost what you reckoned it was per head.

So they got married and then you all just stood about chatting?

I suppose the timings mean a meal isn't expected but it would have been hospitable to provide canapés or cake or a afternoon tea type thing.

That sounds awful!

And sounds like they only wanted people to come to bring gifts, not like they actually wanted to celebrate with anyone.

That's ridiculously inhospitable. I've been to weddings where there wasn't enough food, the food was awful or having travelled to get there for 12 there wasn't any food until 5, but never had NO food.

At least you know all the guests will be bitching about them!

If the invite clearly stated 2-5.30 then I wouldn't expect any substantial food. A few canapés or cake would have been nice though.

Their income is irrelevant.

If you get an invite stating that a wedding is from 2pm 'till 5.30pm then it's fairly evident they're doing it on the cheap.

But even so, one drink, no food, no music, no entertainment, sounds really stingy.

YANBU. It's a pity you didn't realise upon receiving the invite. You should have spent the money you spent on a wedding gift on stopping for a really nice meal on the way home instead.

I'm happy to go with the flow as far as weddings are concerned but for them not to provide any food whatsoever, even if it was just an afternoon wedding, well it's miserly. In the extreme.

They did cut a cake but not sure what happened to it. I would normally agree it's wrong to be calculating about the cost of the present - but I would tend to spend more on a wedding present when i feel it's cost them a lot to host than I would just going to a party - especially when we bought most of our own drinks.

Yabu to bemoan the cost of the gift. A gift is for the couple in celebration of their marriage and not payment for being invited to a wedding.

But no food at all!?!? That is shocking! surely everybody knows that rule number one for happy wedding guests is feed them, preferably lots and often! last wedding I went to had a lovely cream tea, then popcorn, sweet stand and candy floss for the standing around bit and a huge hog roast for dinner and so the evening invitees got fed as well... Perfect!

So if there was no food and no entertainment what did you actually do?

Outline the exact times - was it a standing up mingling party? Were there speeches?

I suspect the couple and some immediate family went out for a big fancy dinner in the evening when the rest of the guests went home.

I wonder what sort of turnout they'd have had if they'd stated on the invites that not one crumb of food would be given to guests.
