So we have 3 young dc. I am a sahm but I am looking for part time work. Dh is about to be between jobs and we have received a large inheritance. Once mortgage paid off we will have maye 150k in the bank.
now dh wants to spend maybe 30k converting the loft so he can have a room for him to use as a hobby room. Thinking building train tracks etc etc.
I am of course happy to support him in this (it is his inheritance) but I do have some qualms about spending alot of money when we will both be between employment. Everyone round us seem to be of the go for it mate mentality which I understand following a bereavement .
mn jury what do you think?

Even if you wait till there is a salary you can still get on with the planning. This may be a virtue as home conversions work better if you think through all the options rather than being railroaded by the builder.

Surely if mortgage paid off and sizeable pensions already built up now is the time to downscale.
My DH has been semi-retired for the last 10 years and I much prefer time over money. It gives me far more options too. We are in our 40s.

My DH has a model railway and computers in his own room - guess where my DC spend most time. Also I asked him and he says you cannot spend too much time on the train at once as you need time away to reflect and plan. He follows some fellow you tube enthusiasts and they all seem to agree with grass cutting and barbeque season cutting short signalling work - good job they are not in charge of the real trains!

Personally I would have more issues with acquiring a second car without a job especially as what he wants / needs may change depending on the job.
