To think this woman is at best misguided and at worst disgusting?

Will try to be brief.

I was introduced to a friend of a friend who is ebf her DS (about 10 weeks) and it came up in conversation that she drinks a bottle of wine in one evening once / twice a week. She was unashamed but made it clear she didn't neck it back (drinks it over the course 4-5 hours)

Once I picked my jaw up off the floor the conversation had moved on but I am still thinking about it days later.

I like a drink, can happily open a bottle and finish it the same evening [over the course of a good few hours, like the lady in question]. I had a glass of champers when 8 months pregnant so I am certainly not adverse to the notion of drinking / pregnancy / BF'ing.

AIBU to find this woman shocking though?

To not drip feed woman is a medical professional not trained in UK and currently a SAHP here, her husband is a Dr, she is not English [culturally I assume this may be relevant as maybe the info is different to here?], and she did this with her first baby who is now 5 and perfectly fine.

Oh god who cares? Keep out of it

SolomanDaisy · 25/04/2015 17:59

Disgusting? Umm, no. It's ok to drink and breastfeed.

GoGiYerHeedAWobble · 25/04/2015 18:00

I'm shocked to my very core Hmm

Totality22 · 25/04/2015 18:01

She actually feeds whilst drinking? Not hours after but during.

Well maybe baby is sleeping well/giving secret bottle at night and she's drinking after baby has last feed for quite a few hours.

If not, I'd be concerned too, but I don't know how long it would take for the effects to leave the milk.

glittertits · 25/04/2015 18:01

Keep your beak out. Smile

LapsedTwentysomething · 25/04/2015 18:02

No difference. It's fine.

MissDemelzaCarne · 25/04/2015 18:02

YABVU and a bit bonkers.

It is not recommended actually, certainly not to that amount. FFS for a parenting website a lot of people on here really don't seem to give a damn about children! One unit takes one hour to leave your system before feeding therefore she would not be able to feed safely for an hour per unit. So unless her baby is already sleeping through the night it is not safe. Do some bloody research.

OP I'd be concerned to but there is nothing you can do, some people will always put their needs first.

Littlef00t · 25/04/2015 18:04

Crossed post. Sounds like she's not being careful. Theoretically drinking whilst giving last feed might be ok as takes time for alcohol to pass through to milk, but doubt there's much of a gap.

Not fully aware of risks though, was she a heavy drinker before she got pregnant?

HighwayDragon · 25/04/2015 18:05

I thought that the drinking/bfing thing had been debunked now

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 25/04/2015 18:05

Do you know how much alcohol will get into the baby from the milk?

Because I think you should find that out and calm the heck down

shirleybasseyslovechild · 25/04/2015 18:05

YABVU to do those pointless and annoying strikeouts

SlippinJimmy · 25/04/2015 18:05

The biggest thing that would put me off doing that would be getting up during the night while tipsy/drunk. Unless she has miracle baby that sleeps through, I've never come across one but I've heard they do exist.

Ultimately it's her choice. It's not what I would do myself like.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 25/04/2015 18:06

If she drinks while feeding, any effects on breastmilk won't have occurred yet

Chocolatefudgebrownieicecream · 25/04/2015 18:06

I used to feed during my first/start of second glass and then not have to feed for hours/give a bottle. I think YABU. You don't know when she is timing her feeding.

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 25/04/2015 18:07

Another for mind your own, unless you have full proof her drinking is actually harming her child. This is the second thread in a couple of days that I've read calling other women 'disgusting'. Something in the water?

ilovesooty · 25/04/2015 18:07

Why all the strike through in the OP. If you want to pass judgement on her at least go the whole how and have the courage of your convictions.

ilovesooty · 25/04/2015 18:07

whole hog

HazleNutt · 25/04/2015 18:08

I've done my research, it's fine to drink and feed. biologybrain-simonsays.blogspot.fr/2008/12/alcohol-content-of-breast-milk.html

kippersmum · 25/04/2015 18:09

I thought that drinking your glass of wine while doing the feed was the best option. It takes a while for the tiny amount of alcohol to enter your milk so you have the longest gap between feeds.

Disclaimer, my "babies" are 7 & 8, & I don't like wine so I may be typing rubbish!

ImNameyChangey · 25/04/2015 18:09

YANBU. Drinking whilst breastfeeding is wrong as is drinking whilst pregnant.

Totality22 · 25/04/2015 18:11

Sorry, I've just figured out how to do strikeout!!

Maybe she knows something I don't but I had to look this up recently as I had a few glasses of wine and the babysitter (SIL) knocked over most of my expressed milk. So I did actually have to feed before the units consumed had left my system.

La lech league say it's fine.
