my dp NEVER tips

My dp just refuses ever to tip. This is because he worked in a pizza restaurant when he was a student and never got any of the tips as he worked in the kitchen.

Aibu to think he needs to give this up and just go along with social norms?

It's a personal choice. Tipping is more of an American thing. If I'm given a price for something, unless that experience was exceptional, then frankly I'm paying the price given.

I also worked in the kitchen and never got a dhare if the tips. My job was harder than waiting on too!!! All they did was take the food out and out it on the table.

we don't generally tip either, not unless the services is exceptional. The price of service is normally included in this country. in the odd resustrant it's not then we would tip.

Kinda agree with your dp. I dont get tipped at work (nhs). We only tip if service is exceptional. Hate the fact its expected.

Were talking about this only yesterday at work. We all knew at least one person who didn't tip and we all held them in low regard and a few of us actively avoided inviting them out with us.

I always tip unless service was poor. I would judge those who don't as being tightsarses.

But I agree its a highly stupid system and decent wages should be paid in the normal way with the cost being added to the price of the meal.

Being a waiter/ess if really hard work and you have to put up with a lot and deserve more than the minimum wage.

It is up to him if he tips or not. However, to choose not to tip based on how he was treated as a teenager is bizarre.

I'm your dp in our relationship (tipping is supposed to be encouragement for 'exceptional' service, regular 'service charge' is part of the bill) and my dh is you.

Apart from anything else, how many service staff declare their extra earnings...?

You can rail against but the system /convention is that tips are factored into waiting staffs salary. If you can't afford to tip you can't afford to eat out.

I very rarely tip and it is only if I have had exceptionally good service. I hate the culture of tipping. I don't tip supermarket staff, nursery staff, shop workers or bus drivers so why should other jobs automatically get given tips? I don't understand why some jobs are expected to get tips and others aren't.

I can sleep at night because I pay the price that they have asked me to pay!

When you say you don't tip, do you mean you have them deduct the 12.5% service charge, or you pay that but nothing on top? Second is fine, first is vilely tight unless service was poor.

I always tip and, although it might not be the sin it is in the USA not to tip, I still think it is the done thing in the UK too. If the service is terrible I don't tip obviously.

Not tipping appears tight, rude and a bit socially inept.

If I was you I would pay the tip for both of you, rather than get annoyed about it. I wouldn't passively accept the no tipping rule.

I always tip in a restaurant unless the service is poor or already included on the bill. Usually around 15% and if I can in cash. I would be hugely embarrassed to go out for a meal with someone who didn't want to do this. I have also always tipped my hairdresser.

I'd find that stingy and a bit embarrassing. I'm surprised at the number of people here who say they don't. If the service is good I always do. I can see why your Dp got fed up in the kitchen, that is unfair I agree. Not sure it would make me refuse to ever tip again though.

I always leave 10% unless the service has been dire. I tip taxi drivers too. In my youth I worked in a 5* hotel and earned a fortune in tips, especially in Ascot/Henley week, and over the summer. I think my best month was about 1k!
