my dp NEVER tips

My dp just refuses ever to tip. This is because he worked in a pizza restaurant when he was a student and never got any of the tips as he worked in the kitchen.

Aibu to think he needs to give this up and just go along with social norms?

On the subject of obsequiousness, great waiting staff know the difference between fawning over the customer and making the customer feel special. It reminds me of a scene in Gosford Park when the Helen Mirren character talks about 'the gift of anticipation' - knowing what the customer wants before they know it themselves.

I worked for TGI's years ago. The training was phenomenal. Two weeks in a class learning menus and all sorts before you were allowed anywhere near a guest. Not sure it's like that now though.

I stopped going to TGIs because there seems to be about one server for about twenty tables, you have to wait AGES.

CatthiefKeith · 08/03/2015 18:25

It never used to be like that, five table sections were the absolute most you were given.

It has changed hands several times since I worked there I think.

I know this thread has mainly been about tipping in Restaurants, but I called the hairdressers this morning to book an appointment for nextcweek,- only to be told that the cost of a cut and blow dry had gone up by £2.50!!
I had been at the point if not tipping any more anyway, or not tipping every time.
This price increase has decided it for me.

PtolemysNeedle · 10/03/2015 16:23

I did the same in the barbers where my sons get their haircuts. They used to charge £8 for a boys cut, and I'd happily give them £10 because they were always so good with my children, but now the price has gone up to £10 each, the barbers have lost out on their tip.

Celticlass2 · 10/03/2015 16:42

£10 is expensive for a boys haircut. I don't blame you for not tipping.

Ah, Gosford Park. I get all my best etiquette rules from Julian Fellowes.

celticlass and PtolemysNeedle. Though we haven't agreed about tipping before on this thread, I'd agree with both of you there.

You want to keep your children's hair tidy and there's more need to with boys' hair if it's a strict school uniform policy because you can put girls' hair in a bun or a ponytail.

You're still paying the bill.

I'd rather have a professional cut hair because my attempts would look like it had been chewed off Grin
