To say that in the light of what has happened in Paris we mustn't give the extremists what they want..?

I'd like to reproduce an article in The New Statesman which is basically saying that the aims of these attacks is to increase anti Muslim prejudice, increasing attacks on these communities ( as we've already seen in France) and thereby increasing the sense of alienation and hostility towards the West and recruiting more terrorists...?

Not sure what you mean about alienation. I feel very alienated, apparently we, non-Muslims, should be willing to discuss blasphemy, boundaries of our freedom of expression (as the poor luvvies otherwise may feel offended and not being able to control their urges to kill us). See articles in the Times, Huffington Post, interviews on BBC and CNN.

What about my feelings? I feel hugely offended that OUR values have to be discussed because they refuse to integrate.

I did not think I would ever say this in my life, but yes, voting in the far right is probably the wake up call the political elite and journalistic elites need.

ghostyslovesheep · 09/01/2015 20:07

I'm not sure I even understand Lemony's post

but as a none Muslim I agree OP x

SlaggyIsland · 09/01/2015 20:09

OP completely agree.

AWholeLottaNosy · 09/01/2015 20:17

"voting in the far right is probably the wake up call the political elite and journalistic elites need."

Absolutely disagree with this sentiment. And this is exactly what we need to avoid thinking. Just look how Nigel Farage sought to make political capitol about what has happened...

I understand lemonys post and it's grim, bigoted, generalising and offensive.

FeelTheNoise · 09/01/2015 20:20

I completely agree

FeelTheNoise · 09/01/2015 20:21

With the OP, I mean. I won't be shunted blindly into a thuggish racist mentality. Extremism is breeding extremism, and it has got to stop

Cantbelievethisishappening · 09/01/2015 20:22

I am really struggling to not slide into intolerance. Feel so angry and upset.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/01/2015 20:22

Well do try hard.

justasecond · 09/01/2015 20:26

yanbu but judging by some of the posts on this and many other threads on mn at the moment they have achieved exactly that.

Royalsighness · 09/01/2015 20:30

If it's hard for you not to hate Muslims and it really feels like a battle to not vote for right wing parties, try and judge every individual on their merits and pitfalls, also try really hard to remember the holocaust began with putting faith in a right wing party that promised change, and that wasn't even a century ago. I can't cope with the constant barrage of islamophoboa and the continual use of terms like "they" and "them" and "integration" the divisions are illusory, the acts of terror do not represent a whole religion or race, try and draw from examples and experiences in your own life before you make decisions RE voting rather than what the media shows you.

It's sad that I feel like a nut for seeing humans as humans.

AWholeLottaNosy · 09/01/2015 20:30

Which is why we have to try to be level headed because. THATS EXACTLY WHAT THE TERRORISTS WANT! We are playing their game if we fall into that trap. ( and I'm as guilty as anyone of feeling more intolerant but where does it end..?)

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/01/2015 20:32

Royalsighness amen to that.

Have been flamed for exactly that today and it is putting me off MN and indeed humanity.

Royalsighness · 09/01/2015 20:32

I sound like David Icke but I know what I meant, it also sounded like a dig but it wasn't. Blush

Royalsighness · 09/01/2015 20:33

I wish we could all sit down and have a good Biscuit together

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/01/2015 20:33

I mean I have been flamed for wanting people to see humans and humans.

AWholeLottaNosy · 09/01/2015 20:33

And I'm a total athiest btw, I have no respect for any religion but this path of intolerance is going to end in hell for all of us. And I have no idea what the answer is either.

SlaggyIsland · 09/01/2015 20:33

I hope that people think through what it will really be like should we vote in a far-right party.
It won't be this lovely utopia - women's rights will go. Gay people's rights will go. Worker's rights will go. Everything that people have worked so hard for, to progress society, will go.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/01/2015 20:33

Grr *as

NoArmaniNoPunani · 09/01/2015 20:34

Totally agree with OP and Royal's post

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/01/2015 20:34

Also an atheist. I am ashamed to be British with all this intolerance, seriously.

Royalsighness · 09/01/2015 20:40

I saw a post tonight on Facebook RE a man praying on the floor of the train as it was a long journey, he went to the quiet part of the train and a "friend" on Facebook posted a photo of the man mid prayer, saying he was basically an inconvenience and a nutcase and he scared her. This offended me but I put it down to "ignance" it was the comments that followed that really shocked me "should have kicked him in the head" "I would have booted him out of the door while it was moving" "probably saying thanks about what just happened in Paris" "he's encroaching on peoples space can't he be more considerate after what's gone on"

The last point is invalid because the truth is, since I can remember, there has never been a good or easy time to be Muslim in the uk, there has never been a break in islamophoboa in the media it's been constant and disgusting.

theeternalstudent · 09/01/2015 20:43

Je suis Charlie. Je suis Ahmed. Je suis humaine

I really worry about the 'othering' of Muslims and the rise of the right. I worry that we seem more interested in protecting our own interests rather than helping those who require humanitarian aid. I worry that we obsess about terrible but rare terrorist attacks and that we will take extreme measures in a misguided attempt to prevent further attacks.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/01/2015 20:43

Yes.

And people, please educate yourselves about far right parties before throwing around crass statements about needing them to be voted in.
