To say that in the light of what has happened in Paris we mustn't give the extremists what they want..?

I'd like to reproduce an article in The New Statesman which is basically saying that the aims of these attacks is to increase anti Muslim prejudice, increasing attacks on these communities ( as we've already seen in France) and thereby increasing the sense of alienation and hostility towards the West and recruiting more terrorists...?

Chicken.

Sorry. That wasn't most gracious apology.

I wasn't using a technique but maybe misread your post.

My.point stands to others.

Gauri · 10/01/2015 11:43

Lemon, your post is offensive.

PausingFlatly · 10/01/2015 11:50

Gauri, this is a struggle for power.

People who are seeking it find stuff within religions to justify this, and offer them something they're not getting in their current lives. Like moral certainty or rewards in this life and the next.

Right now there's a strand deriving from part of Islam doing a good job of selling itself as The Answer.

That doesn't make Islam special and different from all the other religions that have been and will be used this way. And it doesn't mean we can stop such wars by banning all religions, because there's never a shortage of ideologies which offer the chance to be The Admired Hero and have prizes.

If we'd been short-sighted enough to believe that Northern Ireland was just about Christianity, then we wouldn't now have an (approximation of) peace in NI.

And we won't win against Islamic extremists by believing that religion is the final cause of their behaviour, rather than the context.

mrsruffallo · 10/01/2015 11:52

I am baffled by this fear of intolerance against moderate muslims when anti semitic attacks are soaring and Jewish people are discussing where to move to THIS TIME. A lot more anti semitic attacks across Europe (often carried out by angry young muslim men) than random attacks against muslims, Yet you are telling British people constantly to more tolerant.

ChickenMe · 10/01/2015 11:56

Get over it because you say so? Maybe not. Maybe you just want to gloss over what you said.

I don't agree with what Lemony said. I think it's in bad taste (the gun bit) and inferring Muslims are all
going around shooting people. But she's entitled to her views. I can see the point (s)he is making because, funnily enough, some men just the other day gunned a load of people down in the name of Islam. Just not a helpful thing to say in that way at this time (imo).

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 10/01/2015 11:57

Ok so because you object to anti semitic attacks the answer is to be less tolerant to Muslims.

Slight hypocrisy there.

Have had enough of all this. Will be back when MN becomes a bit more tolerant. If indeed it does.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 10/01/2015 11:57

Chicken maybe read my second post.

No glossing over here. I don't do that.

Anyway I really am off.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 10/01/2015 11:58

My previous post was to mrsruffallo.

2015ontheway · 10/01/2015 11:58

mrsruffalo what's your point? We should care for one group and not another? We should care more for one group and not another? We can't condemn both islamophobia and antisemitism equally??

PausingFlatly · 10/01/2015 12:01

Confused I think "fear of intolerance" extends to fear of intolerance against Jewish people, mrsruffallo...

mrsruffallo · 10/01/2015 12:10

Condemning them equally?
Anti semitic attacks are happening on a daily basis and are escalating. A gunmen took hostages in a Jewish bakery.
Anti moderate muslim attacks are not facing the same level of threat of violence.

mrsruffallo · 10/01/2015 12:12

The only intolerance to fear is from extremists willing to gun people down for drawing a cartoon. Words may hurt, but they won't kill you.

Allingoodfaith · 10/01/2015 12:12

I find it baffling that with all the information available to the public today people seem to find it impossible to tell the difference between Muslims & Islamic fundamentalists

this^

But I also find it baffling that when we have been told that we have a severe terrorism attack warning that there are still posters that are in denial. Its something that worries my Muslim friends too. Its probably the same posters that deny fervently on MN that Paedophiles don't/didn't exist.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 10/01/2015 12:12

Yes tell that to Muslims who get attacked and spat on.

Bye all

cleanmachine · 10/01/2015 12:13

Lemon your posts are really disgusting.

All attacks whether against jews, muslims, Christians are abhorrent. Our is it ok to attack muslims on the train because some lunatic went on the rampage?

There have been numerous attacks on mosques in paris this week. Jewish people were killed in a supermarket. A muslim police officer was gunned down. Christians and those with other beliefs are killed at hebdo. ALL these attacks and deaths are abhorrent.

SlaggyIsland · 10/01/2015 12:14

fanjofortemammaries please don't go we need voices like yours.
mrsruffallo of course there are attacks on Muslims on a daily basis too. Do you remember that a year or so ago a young woman was stabbed to death for wearing a burka? Will find and link the news story.
There's a constant level of harrasment against Muslims including Mosques being firebombed.
I condemn all intolerance. I'm not sure what you are suggesting I should do. Only condemn attacks on Jewish people?

PausingFlatly · 10/01/2015 12:15

In denial about the possibility of a terrorism attack? Confused

Can you show me where? I haven't seen that, although of course I don't claim to see every post on MN.

There was a thread where posters were saying, "Yes there's a danger of attack, but you just have to get on with your life anyway."

SlaggyIsland · 10/01/2015 12:15

Link to murder of Saudi student.

ChickenMe · 10/01/2015 12:16

Ok fanjo I just read your post after posting and accept your apology although it's not that I was offended just that I'm against this name-calling for want of a better word. I apologise if I have been offensive to you personally.

mrsruffallo · 10/01/2015 12:16

There is not a constant, daily, level of attacks on muslim people. Where is the evidence?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 10/01/2015 12:18

Slaggy I have to go for a bit. It's just too depressing and too much to fight against. And many hard things going on IRL Thanks

SlaggyIsland · 10/01/2015 12:18

Islamophobic attacks in the wake of the Lee Rigby killing. This is what I'm scared will now happen even more frequently. Mrsruffalo I feel equal dismay if I here of people being targetted for being Jewish.

PausingFlatly · 10/01/2015 12:18

And I've never seen posts on MN denying paedophiles exist.Shock

Though I've seen many saying not all men are paedophiles.

SlaggyIsland · 10/01/2015 12:18

Hope you're back soon Flowers

babbas · 10/01/2015 12:19

Mrsruffalo - please don't detail the thread into a competition of which group of people is attacked the most. Find some compassion, all attacks are abhorrent.

This thread had gone the same way as others on mn. I shall leave you to your intolerant, judgemental frothing.
