Gauri, this is a struggle for power.
People who are seeking it find stuff within religions to justify this, and offer them something they're not getting in their current lives. Like moral certainty or rewards in this life and the next.
Right now there's a strand deriving from part of Islam doing a good job of selling itself as The Answer.
That doesn't make Islam special and different from all the other religions that have been and will be used this way. And it doesn't mean we can stop such wars by banning all religions, because there's never a shortage of ideologies which offer the chance to be The Admired Hero and have prizes.
If we'd been short-sighted enough to believe that Northern Ireland was just about Christianity, then we wouldn't now have an (approximation of) peace in NI.
And we won't win against Islamic extremists by believing that religion is the final cause of their behaviour, rather than the context.
