I have a bit of an addiction for Harry Potter fanfic stories Blush of the non-slash variety

I like potionsandsnitches.com especially but sometimes I venture out into the big wide world of fanfiction

and I have wondered for a while about stories which are adult rated and refer to "non-con" or "chan" sexual relationships between adults and underaged kids (HP and his friends, usually)

shurely these stories are illegal? You can't just write lurid fantasies about child abuse and rape and post them on the net, can you?

And if it isn't illegal, well it bloody well should be

OP posts:
Thingumy · 07/04/2011 16:57

I have no idea just clicked on a random 'story' that was on the front page of that site.

I certainly did not google the word 'underage' for risk of something hideous popping up on my screen.

LaWeasel · 07/04/2011 17:02

I'd never actually been on there before. Although I know it's been around since the NC-17 ban and purge at ff.net

But got two warning pages including one asking for dob and electronic signature.

I have to say I prefer sites that are merely 'click if you're over 18' I don't like things with passwords and systems. You really don't know unless you're in if it's dodgy or not in those circumstances.

ThisisaSignofthetimes · 07/04/2011 17:05

Adultfanfiction.net, aka " the pit of voles". if you want some good quality HP fanfic I'd recommend thepetulantpoetess.com, moderated site with pretty high standards. You have to join to read the higher rated stories. If you like Hermione with anyone else, grangerenchanted.com is another moderated site, again you need to join to read the higher rated stories.

Speaking of revolting combinations I had to bleach my brain after a story about Draco and the giant squid. I don't know why I clicked on it!

acumenin · 07/04/2011 17:51

Thingumy, ao3 requires all stories be content rated, or for a caveat lector to be applied. In my experience, this is pretty standard for fic. I've been reading fic since I was about 20. Going from the fandoms people are namechecking here (MUNCLE, wow) there are people on this thread who have been reading fic way longer. They probably are giving you useful information based on wide experience. Why are you randomly googling and making pronouncements? You don't know what you're talking about and you've said as much yourself. It's embarrassing.

sieglinde · 07/04/2011 17:54

I know the HP fanfiction conference Lumos in las Vegas is closed to under-14s because of the slash. It's no more illegal than any other fanfic. But it's pretty yuck.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 07/04/2011 18:01

I'm probably misreading your post sieglinde, but no one here is saying slash is yuck or illegal (and why would we?) The OP is objecting to fic containing non-con, underage sex. Apologies if that's what you meant Smile

Thingumy · 07/04/2011 18:15

acuemin-I'm embarassing? Seriously,do get over yourself!

I googled adult fanfic as I'd never heard of it and was interested by the OP's thread.

Is that a crime? Or do I have to be a special member of the fanfic club?

I have no inclination of finding out anything more about fanfic as the style is really not my bag.

Hmm
LaWeasel · 07/04/2011 18:19

sieglinde - slash is not yuck and being homophobic is not going to win you friends on this site.

acumenin · 07/04/2011 18:22

It's not a crime, lol, I'm just sayin, you seem to be sitting in the pub looking up beer on your phone.

But now we're on 'gay is yuck' so I'm out, mesen. No thanks!

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 07/04/2011 18:26

I'm still hoping we've misunderstood sieglinde's post...

Thingumy · 07/04/2011 18:30

This thread was 'non con' and child-adult abuse.

Sat in a pub? wtf are you on about?

LaWeasel · 07/04/2011 18:34

(erm, thingumy, I don't know either, I'd just back away. - although I do think you did some very unlucky googling!)

PfftTheMagicDragon · 07/04/2011 18:47

Thingumy I've been reading fanfiction for over 5 years and never come across a child abuse story written for kicks (rather than descriptive backstory as SoH says). I think that adultfanfiction.net is not the place to find decent stories.

ThisisaSignofthetimes I LOVE The Petulant Poetess.

I have read far, far too many Snape stories in my time and have heard all the reasons for his greasy hair Grin

Tee2072 · 07/04/2011 18:50

She means that rather than making an effort and really looking for decent fanfic you did one google search, clicked one link and gave up. Like sitting in a pub and not actually drinking a beer, but reading about it.

Made perfect sense to me. But I also don't judge people or things on 5 minutes of reading/knowing.

LaWeasel · 07/04/2011 18:52

oooh.

I'll be honest. I'm not great at metaphors sometimes.

Rebeccaruby · 07/04/2011 18:55

I'm glad somebody mentioned Lolita. What aboutThe End Of Alice by A M Holmes? Or A Clockwork Orange, which is often recommended for teenagers, and is probably a great book for any kid seduced by gang culture to read and think about. It involves a rape and somebody kicking a tramp to death, but I read it at thirteen, and I was impressed. Admittedly, it's a bit off topic, as it doesn't involve underage sex, but it involves topics which some parents might not likt their Dcs reading about. Or Romeo and Juliet (sorry haven't read the complete thread so this may have been mentioned), where they spend their marriage night together at thirteen.

Or is the problem that the above works have been published, so perhaps have proved some literary merit, with fanfic, there isn't a lot of quality control Smile.

ShowOfHands · 07/04/2011 19:08

Do you know I'd sit in a pub and look up beer. What does it mean? Lager? Bitter? It's all clear as mud to me.

Glitterandglue · 07/04/2011 19:24

I have to say I'm surprised actually at how few messages there have been of the ilk, "WTF is this?" Bringing fanfic out to a huge audience who have no knowledge of it never tends to go well...though perhaps lots of people clicked, got confused and back-buttoned.

Anyway, as far as fiction about underage sex goes...yeah, fiction being the operative word there. Lots of people use the darker stuff like stories about sexual abuse in a therapeutic manner. Some people do get off on it, and while I'd prefer people didn't consider kids to be erotic in any sense, either in reality or fiction, the important thing to remember is that people can draw the line between the two. Rape fantasies (with the fantasist as the victim) are more common than most people think, yet having them doesn't mean anyone would want to be raped in real life. I'm not saying I'm comfortable with the idea of people getting off on fictional children having sex, but banning them entirely from writing about it does start to sound like it's edging towards thought crime.

And equally there are people who write and read about underage sex for neither of those reasons. I wrote some in the past as part of a universe with a bunch of characters who were prostitutes and I wanted to explore how they'd turned to that life and how they'd started. It was dark, and writing and reading about it left me (and my readers) with an uncomfortable feeling. But I think it was definitely valid to explore.

Lots of people too derive entertainment from graphic descriptions of violence. People who like things like Dexter or CSI or Reservoir Dogs or what have you. Doesn't mean they actually want those things to happen in real life. Why is entertainment when sex is involved different?

Yukana · 07/04/2011 19:28

I am also a lover of fanfiction, of the long and good kind, although it depends what I'm in the mood for reading.

Non-con and rape stories are not my thing, I think it's because the author has had the idea stuck in their head and needed to get it out onto paper. I don't think it's a fantasy of the author as such.

SecretNutellaFix · 07/04/2011 19:46

I'm glad that I can here admit to reading and enjoying HPFF.

EricNorthmansMistress · 07/04/2011 20:10

See how many FFers are coming out of the woodwork!

DharmaLovesGreg · 07/04/2011 20:19

The thing that concerns me with fanfic and teenage sex is that it's always good! It's just not real at all Wink

LetThereBeRock · 07/04/2011 20:21

Speaking of Harry Potter fanfic, has anyone read My Immortal?. It's one of the worst examples of Fanfic ever written, but it's priceless.
