I have a bit of an addiction for Harry Potter fanfic stories Blush of the non-slash variety

I like potionsandsnitches.com especially but sometimes I venture out into the big wide world of fanfiction

and I have wondered for a while about stories which are adult rated and refer to "non-con" or "chan" sexual relationships between adults and underaged kids (HP and his friends, usually)

shurely these stories are illegal? You can't just write lurid fantasies about child abuse and rape and post them on the net, can you?

And if it isn't illegal, well it bloody well should be

I LOVE Supernatural fanfic. Read it daily.

I've come across some really explicit stuff but I just don't read it if it's just pervy stuff. The actually horrible stuff I find is really rare. Yes there's child abuse stuff etc but by and large it's part of a proper story and dealt with well and I have no problem with it at all.

There are some that seem to be written as wanking material which while I hate it I don't want it made illegal.

ShowOfHands · 07/04/2011 14:20

There are some brilliant writers in the SPN fandom Hans. Grin

Deliainthemaking · 07/04/2011 14:21

I came across a few when I was a teen and I often wondered what sort of person writes this stuff

Clytaemnestra · 07/04/2011 14:28

I used to go out with someone quite famous when I lived in Japan. My friends thought it was very amusing to send me extremely NSFW fanfiction which they found online about him.

Never really read fan fiction about fictional characters but can understand why people enjoy it/write it. Writing about real people is just weird though.

slowshow · 07/04/2011 14:45

Oooh, Harry Potter fanfiction is weird.

I read some mpreg once

LaWeasel · 07/04/2011 14:48

cly - ff around real people is banned at most host sites now. But yes it is very odd!

In ten years I have read one story that really freaked me out with proper non-con (yes I ignored the warnings) I found it again later and there is a big author's note that comes with it more or less explaining that the author was working through their own issues surrounding the fact that they had been raped. Sad

Which is absolutely horrible. And the story was too - it was meant to be. It wasn't meant to turn anyone on.

There are a huge number of writers who do it because they need the release - they need to say the things they can't in RL. I haven't got a problem with it, if that's what they need to do. It is writing because you need to write things not because you need them to be read iyswim. Even if it was possible, I don't think non-con/chan should be made illegal purely for that.

I have never written the kind of story you describe (and have rarely found it. It is less common in ff than in published books IMO) but I was an abused child (not sexually to be clear) and I read and wrote fanfiction because it was a beautiful escape. It probably saved my life tbh.

LaWeasel · 07/04/2011 14:49

As a side-note: sometimes it's canon that characters had sex underage... what exactly are author's supposed to do about that?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 07/04/2011 14:59

Ohh no the most disturbing one I've found is a Harry/Dobby fic.

LaWeasel · 07/04/2011 15:02

Dobby?! Seriously!

Please tell me it was crackfic?

ShowOfHands · 07/04/2011 15:30

It has to be crackfic. Harry/Dobby? Good lord. If you're going to slash them, there has to be some- albeit occasionally squint hard to see it -UST in the flipping books/show.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 07/04/2011 15:42

On the topic is it wrong to love a good Snape/Hermione fic?

I have no idea if it was crackfic, I didnt read it, was just ficdiving and saw the pair. another one was Harry/Hedwig.

ShowOfHands · 07/04/2011 15:44

Snape is odious. Snape slash Owt is an abomination by default. I've never read any HP though. Is there any with Remus. There must be. I'd put money on there being a large back catalogue of Lupin/Sirius actually. Old friends so back history, care about each other, both real animals .

Tee2072 · 07/04/2011 15:49

Real People fic is just ::Shiver:: Hate it.

I have indulged in a Snape/Hermione on occasion, I will admit.

I used to be really into fanfiction and I go back to it on occasion. My favourite tends to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover fic. People have crossed that show with some that make you go HUH? (like Buffy/Star Wars) and some that just work (like Buffy/Supernatural).

I also used to love Stargate SG-1 fic and have written some. Jack/Daniel. If there's no UST there, there's no UST anywhere!

ShowOfHands · 07/04/2011 15:54

I only read Supernatural, Merlin and Dr Who.

LaWeasel · 07/04/2011 15:55

Ah yes, but fanfiction Snape has a heart of gold. (apparently) and all the MWPP and snape get slashed six ways from thursday...

Snape/Hermione works quite well because they're both smart enough to fox each other I reckon.

If you would like to vomit in your mouth a little I recommend Laurell K Hamilton. Published books with furry sex... but only half way through a book two thirds of a way through the series. Just to catch you completely off guard!

Tee2072 · 07/04/2011 16:02

Yes a heart of gold and his greasy hair is due to the potion he puts on it to protect it from potion fumes. Grin

There is, you know, 'professional' fanfiction. That's all those books you can buy using movie/TV/whatever characters. But in those the writer has to reset everything back to zero at the end. So if, say, Hermione and Snape were to date in one, by the end they'd have to have a mind wipe or something to forget it. Although I don't think those usually pair up unusual characters.

Actually, you might say the new Star Trek is a bit like fanfiction. Especially with the relationship between Urhura and Spock! Of course, it's also an alternate universe! Grin

hephaestus · 07/04/2011 16:06

Oh, god, I have wasted so much of my life on nu!Trek fanfiction. Blush

Chris Pine has hinted that Kirk has a love interest in the upcoming film. I bet it's Spock but I hope it's McCoy Grin

CinnabarRed · 07/04/2011 16:08

On the subject of whether written (or I suppose drawn) erotica featuring illegal acts should ever itself be illegal, is there an argument that it could act as a 'presssure valve' for people who would otherwise only get sexual release from explicit photos/videos (which would necessarily involve harm to victims in their creation) or, worse, the real thing?

I don't know the answer, BTW, I just wondered whether it was a further justification.

EricNorthmansMistress · 07/04/2011 16:08

There's a mahoosive Remus/Snape thing. Lots of Marauders slash too. I got to say I likes me some Snupin!

mozette · 07/04/2011 16:11

Need to some Supernatural Fanfiction recommendations please ladies,if you would be so kind.

Mumofaflump · 07/04/2011 16:13

Oh oh oh!

Did you read the Cassie Clare (sp?) series before it was all removed?

It was flippin awesome! I would say it was better than the actual books. Also, Echo writes amazing HP FF. Her site is "The Cursing Ferret"

RevoltingPeasant · 07/04/2011 16:14

Tee So you've read Cambiare Podentes too? Grin

I have to say I'm actually seriously disturbed by people like knittedbreast and others saying it should be illegal, or even questioning that.

You do realise you are basically advocating mind control? Because no child is being harmed. It is an enormous violation of free speech, imo, to say that people can't explore imaginative scenarios, even ones based on 'disgusting' acts.

On that logic, you would ban Lolita, right? It clearly eroticises a middle-aged man having sex with a pubescent girl. It also happens to be a literary masterpiece.... but never mind, eh!

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 07/04/2011 16:15

Oh god I

Mumofaflump · 07/04/2011 16:18

Oh! Also for anyone who likes Buffy FanFic... Google TEAOWAS (The Erotic Adventures of Willow and Spike).

Found that when I was 17 and still relatively sweet and innocent. Oh my....

Tee2072 · 07/04/2011 16:18

Possibly RP, but I am horrible at remembering story names. What's it about? Grin
