Extremists BUrning Poppies

Lucy88 · 14/11/2010 13:26

AIBU to think that the extremists that burnt poppies in London last week should be hung, drawn and quartered?

OP posts:
TattyDevine · 14/11/2010 13:29

YABU

There were 29 of them, out of millions of people in the UK

They were exercising freedom of expression

They had to buy the poppies to burn them

They achieved nothing, and nobody got hurt.

Let it go, dont let them get to you

Grandhighpoohba · 14/11/2010 13:29

AIBU to think that that is a bit extremist?

nannynobnobs · 14/11/2010 13:32

Bloody nora. The amount of previously sane people who have got so up in arms about this. Facebook in particular has been rife with the 'if you don't like it here fuck off home' brigade. I have deleted two people for their hate filled posts.
They were a small group who did it purely for the publicity. Purely to elicit this reaction. Turn away, ignore, then they have no power. There was very little publicity for the delegation of Muslim women who laid wreaths.

vnmum · 14/11/2010 13:43

It is a sorry fact that these extremists get all the publicity and therefore create the hate culture towards muslims. I am a forces wife and my DH has lost friends in afghanistan recently and i could easily have gone along with the fuck off home view, but i am mature enough to know that they represent a small minority of muslims who share their views.

LittleMissHissyFit · 14/11/2010 14:21

They are not muslims, they are bonkers.

They are so stupid as to think that this kind of behaviour will do anything? As Tatty said, they had to buy the poppies to burn them.

Just goes to show how brainless they are.

They won't win, they can't. Freedom will always win over oppression.

Don't let them get to you.

Heracles · 14/11/2010 14:25

As extremists they have to do something extreme. It's in their club rules.

What's your excuse, OP...?

sfxmum · 14/11/2010 14:25

the idea of trying to burn a poppy strikes me as ever so slightly ridiculous, burn fingers I expect
it is silly provocation best ignored

Lucy88 · 14/11/2010 15:47

I never mentioned 'Muslims' or 'go home' in my thread.

I am a very sane person, who happens to think this is very disrespectful.

OP posts:
electra · 14/11/2010 15:50

Who cares? It's freedom of speech. A crap thing to do and pretty pathetic attention seeking but freedom of speech none the less.

As someone else said earlier this week, they had to buy the poppies in the first place. Why get wound up about them?

redflag · 14/11/2010 15:52

It is very disrespectful, and i am frankly annoyed that people are being looked down upon for being annoyed about it. And if i were a Muslim i would be really pissed off that people keep using the name of my religion to offend and hurt people.

EricNorthmansMistress · 14/11/2010 15:58

YABU
you want to carry out a medieval form of torture and eventual death on people who made a disrespectful gesture? Get a grip.

Getting up in arms about a tiny minority of twats just achieves their goals for them - it brings the silly stunt publicity and it fuels religious and racial disharmony. People like this should be IGNORED.

RunawayChristmasTree · 14/11/2010 15:59

YANBU the irony of it all is these mindless idiots do not realize that if it were not for the bravery of those who gave their lives for our freedom the would have no right to protest.

Disgusting behavior from all involved, however do not let this bunch of mindless people stir up hate to a wider population as that is what they want, to cause hatred and mistrust between individuals and groups of people.

The vermin that burnt the poppies were just that vermin, they do not speak for decent people anymore then the vermin on the other side of the road chanting their vile hatred speak for me.

It is only when everyone renounces this kind of vile behavior that we can show the extremist from all sides they will not win in creating hate, fear and terror to the decent people of this world

RunawayChristmasTree · 14/11/2010 16:01

Sorry that should be YANBU to be upset about it but I think hanging drawing and quartering them is going a bit far, lock them up by all means but do not stoop to their mentality

victoriascrumptious · 14/11/2010 16:05

YABU.

Us in the West-especially the UK caused this crap in the first place when we drew false boundaries in the middle east and created Israel. We created this fuck up post WW2.

Tell me why the people who have suffered in the middle east should feel 'respect' for our vetrans when we don't give any of their dead any respect.

Burning poppies isn't hurting anyone.

daftpunk · 14/11/2010 16:05

Yanbu;

If these extremists are allowed to be outrageously disrespectful and have their "right" to free speech ( & these idiots wouldn't be able to do what they're doing if our soldiers hadn't died for democracy) then you're allowed your opinion. I'm sick of people saying - "oh it's only 27 of them"
Salman Rushdie was only one person - he managed to upset half the world.

victoriascrumptious · 14/11/2010 16:06

If they were burning puppies I would feel differently

redflag · 14/11/2010 16:06

I think that may have been tongue in cheek! Hmm

victoriascrumptious · 14/11/2010 16:08

I think people need to really educate themselves their political history and try to understand how we have contributed to the rise in so called 'extreamism' and how really it's hardly surprising that they are 'exreame'.

I'm a white catholic not a muslim btw and the whole situation makes me feel sick and worried for the most part because people on both sides are getting more and more angry about things they don't fully grasp

redflag · 14/11/2010 16:08

Tbh its not them i get annoyed with, its the way our country refuses to defend its self, they only do what we allow them to do.
And as for saying its a minority of idiots, yes it is, a minority that blow themselves up in the name of a god, that would frankly spit in their faces if they ever met him.

victoriascrumptious · 14/11/2010 16:09

I'm also upset and annoyed that I cant spell extreame

"the Muslim woman laying a wreath"
Why should that be news? Should be a common occurrence!

mosschops30 · 14/11/2010 16:18

I think the 'you know where the airport is' comments stem from the extremists like these who want a voice and the right to protest ..... but ....oh yes ..... despise the country, people and laws that allow them to do it.
Similarly have seen a programme about people involved in extreme activties saying how much they hate the west and our way of life whilst logging on to You Tube to showcase their videos Hmm

I agree that most muslims are peaceful and law abiding. You can get just as many Christian extremists (especially in the US) although not as prevelant in the media.

So whilst I agree that those who hate what the west stand for really should go elsewhere and get on with life, I do thinki your 'hung, drawn and quatered' comment is ill advised.
