AIBU to think that the extremists that burnt poppies in London last week should be hung, drawn and quartered?

OP posts:
RosieAndGin · 14/11/2010 18:20

It all springs back to this old saying "I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it". We allow freedom of speech in this country, and as such have to tolerate the idiots who abuse it.

MoralDefective · 14/11/2010 18:26

RosieandGin.....very good quote..can't remember who said it but ..
Yes.

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 18:29

Daft punk - Actually, that "point" you think you made on pg 1 re Salman Rushdie is irrelevant.

Of course OP has the right to an opinion and the right to express that opinion, however distasteful, just like the protesters.

However, she is is asking us if that opinion is unreasonable. And most people on this thread seem to think she is.

daftpunk · 14/11/2010 19:17

Yes, she is being unreasonable to think that - but it's her right to have unreasonable thoughts...

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 19:44

Nobody said it isn't Hmm

Now this is a "straw man".

So what exactly do you think is the important point you made on pg 1 that must have "went over a few heads"?

daftpunk · 14/11/2010 20:01

Well - it's hard sometimes to have a tolerant attitude towards people who aren't tolerant themselves - don't you think?

daftpunk · 14/11/2010 20:08

And: the - "it's only a few nutters" attitude. How many people/ demonstrations does it take until we're allowed to get pissed off with them ?

One man wrote a book. He had to go into hiding for 20 years.

giveitago · 14/11/2010 20:15

Moral - that's absolutely right - I agree that our forefathers (male and female) fought for the rights that we have in this country.

One of those rights was the preservation of freedom of expression. It's probably the most obvious british culture we have.

Sadly that means that arseholes also have their freedom of expression. But actually I'm happy that we have it so we can identify the arseholes in question - in this case about 30 arseholes and in the case of the student riots - 50-100 arseholes.

I'm proud of our tradition of freedom of expression.

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 20:22

Again, this is not about tolerance. This is about people exercising their rights.

Also, the fatwa on Rushdie was issued by some nut in Iran, not the UK. So, unless you are now saying Iran should be a role model for UK law and governance, you have no relevant point there whatsoever.

daftpunk · 14/11/2010 20:35

Lol - oh, so all the muslims in the UK ignored it did they? What do think they said - "oh ignore that nutter in Iran we live here now" ?

My leader lives in Rome. Am i supposed to ignore him because he doesn't live around the corner?

You're making no sense at all.

LunarRose · 14/11/2010 20:37

yanbu

ApocalypseCheese · 14/11/2010 20:38

Wellllll, alongside them you'd have to hang, draw and quarter those who have burned the Koran, tore up the satanic bible, tore up the bible, hurled racist insults/sprayed grafitti etc, would you be ok with that ?

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 20:39

"My leader lives in Rome"

Adolfo Hitler lives??? In Rome???

your Pope, rather.

catinthehat2 · 14/11/2010 20:56

I think you've overstepped the personal attack chalk line there Cote. I'm hoping that post gets deleted soon.

daftpunk · 14/11/2010 20:56

Look - there's no need to get abusive with me.

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 21:02

It is no secret that daft punk is a racist and BNP supporter. And ignorant, demonstrated below.

Maybe you just haven't read her posts on other threads.

The only debatable term in my post below is "little", for I am not really sure that she is so. It just feels that way.

daftpunk · 14/11/2010 21:03

You asked me some questions and I answered you. I am fully aware that 99% of Muslims both in this country and around the world are peaceful, law abiding citizens ( just like most people ) ... I just think something needs to be done about the extremists who are causing problems for everyone - including Muslims.

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 21:05

daftpunk - Are you saying we should tolerate you?

Didn't you just say that it is hard to tolerate people who don't tolerate others?

daftpunk · 14/11/2010 21:07

I'm going to ignore your personal attacks. There's only one ignorant person here - and it isn't me.

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 21:09

Don't change the subject.

You said Muslims in UK would naturally obey Iran's Khomeini just like you would obey the Pope. I just told you that Muslims don't have a global leader like your Pope, and that Khomeini was only the head of Iran.

Wouldn't you agree that was astounding ignorance on your part?

daftpunk · 14/11/2010 21:12

No - I wouldn't.

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 21:13

You will of course ignore any challenges to your world view, even when you are proven wrong.

That is the way of the extremist.

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 21:16

If not ignorance, what would you call thinking Muslims have a Pope-like global leader living in Iran? Hmm
