would you reiburse as lesson learned
or let him learn hard way

there was NO reason for him to have had his wallet with him

I'm afraid I'm firmly in the "let him suffer" camp.
It's a harsh lesson, but one that cannot be learned to early, especially as he's going up to secondary school?

sherby · 15/08/2009 20:00

god in that case he can take it out of his savings, he learns a lesson and you/gp don't have to shell out for his mistake

Flamesparrow · 15/08/2009 20:00

Standing firmly in "aw poor guy" line Miss

yellowvan · 15/08/2009 20:04

if it was DS and I could afford to, i'd buy a replacement and "pretend" to find it, so he doesn't run away with idea that M and D will just buy another one, but i 'd be saved from sad eyes and misery.

nomoremagnolia · 15/08/2009 20:04

After xmas we couildn't find my £50 gift card from ILs and came to the painful conclusion that DH must have accidently binned it (he was the one organised enough to throw the rubbish wrapping paper etc away) DH was distraught that he'd done that (and won't forget it ever I think!) We replaced the money ourselves (I even went to Next and bought a replacement gift card) and we never told the ILs we'd lost it. Please don't tell the gifters that he lsot the money.
Assuming he's feeling as bad about it as my DH did (and I get that impression from your description of his face) I'd suggest replacing 1/2 and getting him to earn the other 1/2 (unless money is really tight of course)

nomoremagnolia · 15/08/2009 20:06

blimey - just seen how much I used brackets in that post!! sorry

NorkyButNice · 15/08/2009 20:11

If he's got 2k in savings (impressive so well done him!) then I'd make him buy the game out of that.

I'd buy him another wallet and maybe reimburse some bday cash for small spending but what lesson does it teach if he can lose money and you'll replace it even if he's got his own savings to dip into? Assuming he's not banned from touching his savings?

geordieminx · 15/08/2009 20:23

oOOO What yellowvan said. Good one

OldDoe · 15/08/2009 20:26

God, your DH is hard-faced isn't he? Did he never lose anything in his entire life? Oh yes, you said he had....on more than one occasion - so losing something once taught him nothing then?!

Give the kid some money and a new wallet and start again!

Flamesparrow · 15/08/2009 20:40

Oooh I like the pretending plan too

LIZS · 15/08/2009 20:46

aww poor chap. Have to say I'd probably go ape , not sure whether I'd replace.

BadgersArse · 15/08/2009 20:54

I like the pretending idea
dh will NOT go for it.

This thread reminds me of an Emo Phillips joke which goes like this:

'I was walking down Fifth Avenue one day and I found a wallet with $350 in it. And I was going to hand it in, but then I thought how would I feel if I lost $350 and I realized I'd want to be taught a lesson.'

foxinsocks · 15/08/2009 20:56

I wouldn't go for pretending

it's not real. Life can be shit and there are little shits who will steal/take wallets and not hand them in and probably better than he understands that tbh. (also there comes the problem of someone finding it and handing it in in the meantime!)

BadgersArse · 15/08/2009 20:56

Agree with the other hairy-lipped wizened hags (and your DH) who think he should have to live with the consequences. Give him lots of hugs and sympathy though.

Was there no address in the wallet? Is there a chance it might be returned? I really hope it does find its way back to him!
