Turkish Delight was "full of Eastern Promise", whatever that meant. The music might have been another Jeff Wayne composition.

"So light. So subtle. So buy some." This was for either a sherry or sherry-based liqueur during the 1980s. I can't remember which.

"Bread wi' nowt taken out." Allinson Bakeries.

Were you truly wafted here from paradise?
Nah, Luton airport!
(Campari)

Also the Australian perfume which I so wanted - those tiny glass corks were brilliant - but @Redheadedstepchildbeat me to it.

There! Thankyou! Sometimes I feel like I imagined the Australian perfume but it was real!

Edited: Only it wasn't.

It definitely existed - I’ve tried to find a photograph but it seems that none exist. You’re right about the advertisements not being confined to London too.

"Only the best for the Captain's table." I was an extra in a Birds Eye Fish Fingers ad in the 70s.

TishToshByGosh · 16/09/2026 21:50

Come and talk, talk to the Midland, come and talk - to the listening bank.

May the walls of Birmingham wipe clean of pea and ham.

My feet are killing me - I could do with a D

Accrington Stanley?

I want to be a princess!

This is a man with good taste!

All wrapped up in a perfect square - it's really unexpected to find it there!

They're tasty, tasty, very very tasty. They're very tasty.

Hope it's chips it's chips, we hope it's chips it's chips.

Do the shake and vac and get the freshness back

Ariston, and on, and on, and on

You'd better hear it on a Maxell

Re-record, not fade away, re-record not fade away

It's smart to start with Kellogg's Cornflakes

"Only the best for the Captain's table." I was an extra in a Birds Eye Fish Fingers ad in the 70s.

Someone at my school class auditioned to be in those adverts in the early 80s, but didn't get a place at the Captain's Table. We were really disappointed not to be seeing someone we knew in an advert.

“William is going to be a footballer, Suzanna is going to be a ballet dancer, and according to Mummy I’m going to be a proper little madam.” Shoe shop, may Clarks.

”Whitbread, big head, Trophy bitter, the pint that thinks it’s a quart.” Beer. I didn’t understand at the time, but perhaps it means the beer seems big???

Robin Hood, Robin Hood riding through the glen.
Robin Hood, Robin Hood with his band of men.
Feared by the bad, loved my the good!

I am a secret lemonade drinker. R Whites lemonade. Song written and performed by Elvis Costello's father. Elvis Costello backing singer, I think.

"Happiness is a cigar called hamlet ....." Some ads with Russ Abbot. Loved his Mastermind spoof.

rollypollly · 16/09/2026 17:57

@Redheadedstepchild

You may know this already but they created and sold a book called Fly Fishing by J R Hartley after that ad because it became so popular.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_Fishing:_Memories_of_Angling_Days

I still remember that lovely actor "My Name?.... J R Hartley"

They did an updated version of this ad for the Yell app - it was a man who had made a trance record, his name was Day-V-Lately. (I’m a marketing lecturer and use both as examples in an advertising module I teach!)
